Holy shit how can someone think this ? Characters are more important than karts, they're 95% of the SFX you're hearing while racing, and you're supposed to feel attachment to them, not the fucking karts. And it makes more sense for a kart to be faster than another, compared to two characters having different speed while driving the same kart.
In a ideal world neither characters nor karts have stats so you have full choice over cosmetics without sacrificing stats, but if I had to pick only one aspect being neutered I'd chose characters every fucking day.

I was in the beta. You need high scores on cups to get all the stars and unlock all the rewards. You're ultra gimped without a three star gacha roll though, and the controls are either terrible swiping or tilt like a retard, but they may have added landscape mode or better control options. Still, at its core its Mario Kart on your phone. It's fun but repetitive since it's about replaying a track for a good score now.

Oh, if you don't have a three star you can technically grind a character, kart, and glider to level them up for more points, but with the luck-based nature of Mario Kart that can be a hello a slog.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a special case, since it seems at this point that is meant to be the Switch’s primary Mario Kart rather than a whole new installment. It’s not surprising that people are going to want new stuff at this point.

Mount Wario was one of the best new tracks though.

Biggest issue with Smash is definitely the gameplay. If they actually managed to figure it out, then I wouldn’t count out the possibility of a mobile installment.

As far as I saw, there is no way to play with a "traditional" control scheme (wheel with accel button and item button, or just dpad with accel button) Also no horizontal play. No controller support whatsoever.
