They were thinking they'd actually take the complaints of third-party and indie developers to heart when they complained about Nintendo's 20 year-old ROMs completely overshaowing their games, which was a major problem for the Wii U and 3DS.
Seems to be working, as the Switch has better third-party support than any Nintendo platform since the SNES, and it has a good 1900 games out or slated to come out, which is more than any past Nintendo platform, and it did it in 2.5 years.
