Oblivion

To me pure adventure means exploration without the game shoving plot down your throat - particularly without the game telling you that you're on a mission to defeat the ancient evil, etc. It means you are on a journey for the sake of the journey, not for some other specific objective.

The only such games that immediately come to mind are Minecraft, Terraria, Nethack, and Pokemon Red/Blue (I haven't played any other pokemon games to compare them). Bethesda games (Elderscrolls particularly) are good contenders as well.

DAOC and FFXI gave me the feeling of adventure when I first played them, but I don't think it would be the same going back too them at this time, now being much older and neither have aged very well. WOW never felt terribly adventurous to me, nor does FFXIV.

You need free reign for that

Minecraft
Elder Scrolls
Zelda
Lots of MMOs
Terraria

Roughly in that order

Baldur's Gate
Might and Magic 6

Witcher 3.

Minecraft gives more a feeling of wonder, not adventure. Their are some beautiful vistas you come across, but the world itself is actually relatively lifeless. There's basically no interaction with NPC's, and up until recently, the mov variety was seriously lacking.

The first Dragon Quest Builders did it for me. Haven't played the second yet, tho.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had a great feeling of the adventure you're talking about

Dragon's Dogma

I've played all these fucking games. Give me something else
