I'm assuming you've made it out of Fort Joy and are now in Driftwood? Just go to other areas west of the town, there's some level 11-12 quests there.

do i have to improve my equipment? i barely have gold

Get the main quest of that region if you haven't started it already. Then go to the mines west of town. That cavern should level you up to 12-13 and it will make future encounters much easier once you go east towards the graveyard

what about that quest with the undead phylosopher? apparently i need to read some books in ryker mansion, but there's a lot of mute monks. Do i have to do ryke's quest then kill him, so i can get his books without "stealing"? ive tried sneaking but they always find me
