In the cooler movie it actually made sense, because this was supposed to take place before goku was able to go super saiyan at will, like how he told trunks that he wasn't able to do it at first. Keep in mind that the majority of the Z movies can't make sense in the timeline, so you have to piece together when they happen on your own.

Man Kaioken looked so fucking cool. Very dynamic and moving aura that responded to quick bursts of movement and the after effects emphasized speed and power.

Cooler's fighting style is so iconic

Pure physical dominance. Sadistic an brutal, the parts where he puts Goku through mountains - the gif there- him easily jumping through a Kamehameha. He makes Goku look like a little kid being bullied by someone just completely bigger and better. And when he does have to bust out an energy move, it's quick efficient and the size of a fucking moon.

Kaioken used in excess damages the body so it explains why Goku became more retarded as time went on. Heavy usage wrecks the body in a very noticeable way as it happened in Draon Ball Super when Goku combined the Kaioken and his God Form fighting Hit. The earliest uses in DBZ were also damaging his brain.

This Kaioken brain damage results in Goku acting the way he does in Dragon Ball Super.

Super Saiyan forms are transformations that increase stat capacities. Kaioken increases stats above their capacity.

I always interpreted it as the super Saiyan forms use different, more efficient ki channels. Meanwhile, kiaoken forces too much ki down the base channels and they become overburdened.

Of course, this is just headcanon but it makes sense to me.

The movies don't make sense because they had to assume what would happen in Dragon Ball before Toriyama's upcoming creation.
The writers just assumed that Goku would return to earth without mastering SS.
If you see each movies with that perspective, you will understand why they don't make sense.

Super Saiyan is harnessing a latent power already existing within 100% unique and extremely rare Saiyan biology and activating it an an efficient and (now) easy way for an extended period of time. Kaioken is forcing the body to burn through large amounts of energy to temporarily work Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger which doesn't last as long and should therefore be theoretically learned from any human.

I know they used to depict steam emanating from the body much earlier, so I liked to think the increase in energy and temperature literally caused cell damage and thus harmed the body.

For some reason I thought Kaioken amplified all sense including pain resulting from enemy attacks which was a reason why it was never officially combined with Super Saiyan until DBS.

This one and the Broly Funi dub with the edgy music are the two best movies, and that scene is literally the best out of all of them.
I've watched all of DB subbed, all of DB, DBZ, DBGT dubbed, all of DBS subbed, I've watched most versions of every movie, and I appreciate all of them in their own way, but the edgy music Funi dubs of Cooler's Revenge and Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan were the first ones I watched and I have so much nostalgia for them because of that.

The movies are specifically alternate canon where something happened differently during the main events. i.e. in Turles, Goku arrived on time against the saiyans, so the others didn't die. In Lord Slug and Cooler, Goku defeated Frieza with the spirit bomb, so he never turned super saiyan and they just went back home. He turned "false" super saiyan against Slug, then unlocked it against Cooler.
Subsequently, Super Android 13 takes place in a timeline without or before Cell, and it seems 17 and 18 were weaker, as they never went in the time chamber since Trunks has short hair, and also 18 didn't break his sword. in Broly, either Trunks or Vegeta killed Cell in his second form, or perhaps he didn't dodge the Final Flash. Bojack fits in the main canon anyway. In Janemba, Gohan probably killed Super Buu, since Goku and Vegeta are both still dead. Think of all the movies in this manner.
