It seems that when winging it gamedevs strike gold whether it be not being too myopic on some detail they'd think is really cool or it allows creativity (especially in this case when most of the heavy work with asset creations and engine was done with other PS2 SMT games and P3 before it), that or just the bare minimum effort leads to something appealing. While 5 is a better game and 3 a better plot/atmosphere or whatever there's something special about 4, maybe that it's apologetically upbeat rather than half assing trying to return to form like 5.

Because it actually had a good story and characters which is unprecedented for a JRPG. It focused on all the strengths of Japanese writing which is a mix of friendships between different personality types and coming of age stories about inner struggle.

It has none of the usual edgy shit garbage games like Nier, MGS or Persona 5 do. It depicts immature characters in a mature way, while those games depict mature games but in a way a retarded, edgy 12 year old would imagine them.

These things are kind of why I'm not fond of the P3 movie, cause it's a big part of Yukari's character to fall in love with Minato and address her trust and romance issues, which the P3 movie drops in favor of Aigis 24/7. Not that Aigis isn't an incredibly important character too, but flatlining another significant character's personality and development in favor of waifuing one particular one isn't good.

For me they built up kamoshida really well, to the point I could see the direction the game was going for with the villains and was excited for the rest but then they never gave that attention to detail ever again. The story is about as good as the other two and the characters as well, so the only thing left would be game play. While the combat is definitely superior to other persona games because of stream lining and technical advancements, it doesn't do anything new or interesting with the battle formula that wasn't seen already. For the social sim aspect there wasn't nearly as many social events with the whole party so you don't feel as connected, so at parts it feels a bit disjointed in how their acting and how you expect them to act. I hope royal fixes this because as it is now it just feels unfinished, like they got 80% through the game and then pushed it out

The game falls off so hard after the first dungeon it's not even funny. The writing has absolutely no depth and actually pissed me off to the point where I dropped the game 60 hours in, and it didn't help that the pacing was fucking bad. I tried very hard to like it as I'm a big fan of P4 but I couldn't do it.

I didn't really think any of the new features to combat added anything. Sure it was presented much better but nothing of substance was added. I am curious to see what they fix with Royal, maybe I'll go back and finish it then.

Honestly, Nanako's almost death hit me hard when it happened. I don't think anything Atlus made hit me as hard except maybe DDS. Out of all the Persona series, it definitely felt the most "complete" for me. Adachi was the best human villain out of the 3.

Setting is Osaka/the Kansai region as a whole. "Other world" is a Sengoku period drama with demons roaming the countryside. Entire game is themed around taking your own step into the future instead of being burdened by the past and tradition.

On the topic of edgy I wouldn't mind Persona 6 being happy and positive the first half, then something happens at the midway point that makes the rest of the game go full grimdark. Something that causes such a catastrophe that the world has become like Infernal Tokyo and it's kill or be killed to survive, and that you get an entirely different set of S-Links in the warring world which means you can only do some of them before everything is brought to ruin.

PQ also had way more limited combat options.

Make it like Hook where the MC had a persona and all in the past, but growing up and the drudgery of life made him forget how to use the magic, or that he even had it to begin with. And it's only through rediscovering the joy of his youth that he regains his powers.
Hook was a terrible movie but the core idea is solid.

I like both P3's bleak and horror outlook, with a group of individuals who banded together not because they're friends, but simply because only they can wield power to fight the monsters, and who eventually learn to work out their issues and become close friends, as well as P4's more cheery and upbeat outlook of a group of highschool students who are actually friends to investigate the murders going on in their town.

It's neat that in PQ Yukari notes that the Investigation Team is so much closer while SEES is distant and cold in comparison, and she makes an effort to try and bring everyone closer as a result.

I'm gonna be honest, I never was totally sold on everyone being friends in 4. Oh sure they're all Yu's friend, but friends with each other? Almost none of them ever hang out when you're not around aside from Chie and Yukiko (who have history that is from before you coming to town) and Teddie and Yosuke (since they live together).

I actually had a JRPG idea based around the reverse of this, where a teenage protagonist transfers into a new school, discovers they have powers and starts dungeon crawling, and starts assembling a party. Only instead of it being other students his first party member is his lazy homeroom teacher, so they start gathering a party of adults and end up having their base of operations in the basement of a family restaurant.

Towards the end it's revealed that the protagonist was merely sharing fragments of their power with the adult party members, and they were supposed to join a pre-existing team of high schoolers who've gone mad with power in the meantime and are now threatening the fabric of reality with some shit.

You can't just blame Ryuji when it was the entirety of the PT that thought the same. None of them were willing to trust any adults and took it upon themselves to enforce "justice".

Almost no one is talking about the gameplay here, the things people are saying should be taken from 1 and 2 are thematic elements and mood.

A field leader who'd be in direct combat was needed, as well as a navigator to provide outside support. Mitsuru was the only one who could fit the latter until Fuuka came along, so she took that role and someone else had to fill in the leader role. She's been in her position for a while, so she probably thought that someone who's actively been in combat recently should continue giving orders since that's what the others were used to by then.
