I recently stumbled across it and played it and it's absolutely amazing It also made me realize it is not just nostalgia. Games, especially horror games just used to be a lot better. Despite the N64 graphics the atmosphere in this game is better than in any game released within the last 10 years.
What are your thoughts on this game? What are some similar games like this that I might have missed too? (I played the SH & RE series and also Penumbra & Amnesia)
Horror games used to put in an effort, and the ability to fight back to a limited degree kept things suspenseful and engaging.
Now it's all >OOGA BOOGA NON-LETHAL JUMP SCARE >OH NO A MONSTER RUN AWAY AND HIDE UNDER A BED WHEN YOU BREAK LOS >AH A CREEPY DOLL IN AN OLD HOUSE
Benjamin Allen
Its pretty amazing but also the first game I can think of where its literally pick from 3 endings represented in different colors at the end of the game.
Levi Evans
its a neat game, its not really that scary but the subject matter is horror. I wouldnt put it in the same category as silent hill which would seem strange but it makes sense to me.
Jayden Nguyen
Pretty much this
I know its a lot different from Silent Hill, but honestly I don't know any other games I could really compare it to
Adam Harris
Its a game I love but I can certainly say needs a remake since you can tell its still limited by its N64 roots
James Collins
Nintendo still own the IP?
Matthew Reed
Or a sequel Its hardbreaking to read how the developers fucked up every chance of making one
Yes, but my hopes are on a level with Half Life 3
Charles Price
Yes Alex was even a spirit in Smash Ultimate
Austin Morales
This game truly tricked me. The part where the sanity changes your tv channel and volume, was the same color on screen as my old tv. The roach, deleting save files. Whole thing was awesome.
Cooper Gonzalez
The only scary thing about Eternal Darkness is the bathtub jumpscare and only because the game doesn't look like the jumpscare type of game at first glance. I wouldn't even classify it as atmospheric because there barely isn't any when you are jumping between times and characters nonstop. It's just a standard adventure game with an ominous lovecreaftian story.
Ian Rivera
Eternal Darkness was absolutely amazing; it's one of my favorite Gamecube games. >What seemed like a fairly obvious slam-dunk sequel to a classic game has instead been a circus of multiple failed crowdfunding campaigns, child pornography, and outright lack of faith in the developers. wtf
Owen Hughes
>What seemed like a fairly obvious slam-dunk sequel to a classic game has instead been a circus of multiple failed crowdfunding campaigns, child pornography, and outright lack of faith in the developers.
I'm glad I only discovered this game a week ago so I didnt have to experience the multiple let downs other fans had to experience
Ayden Stewart
>What are your thoughts on this game PARGON PARGON ULYOTH PARGON PARGON PARGON
Alexander Hill
Reminder that Epic Games killed Silicon Knights and is ultimately the reason why there is no sequel.
Joseph Young
Don't you make that decision at the beginning of the game?
Carson Martinez
Yes, it's basically the first thing you do. Also, there is a fourth ending.
Chase Mitchell
>Horror It's as horror as Persona 2 or the Dragonborn DLC are, meaning it's just a game with Lovecraftian story elements.
Brody Murphy
CHARLEMAAAAAAAAAGNEEE
Parker Price
Was ED's holocaust really one of Pious' plans?
Ryder Williams
It wasn't Denis Dyack being a fucking retard? Also the game was cool, enchanting guns and weapons and blowing up the everloving fuck out of enemies weak to that rune was satisfying.
Jaxson Nelson
It was his final solution
Ian Howard
No. SK sued Epic for a legitimate reason. Epic counter-sued with bullshit. Court sided with Epic and it bankrupted SK.
Grayson Green
Man that sucks, fucking Epic Games then.
Wyatt Gutierrez
>people hating on the graphics Nigger the graphics are maximum comfy. There will never be 3D games with this level of cozy atmosphere ever again. You really want UNREAL ENGINE, FROSTBITE, LENS FLARE, POST PROCESSING, CHROMATIC ABBERATION and all that other garbage up the ass?
I remember getting this for free with my Gamecube and didn't play it for years until I was in uni and fucking loved it
Henry Sanchez
Peter Jacob's chapter was always one of my favorite.
Levi Russell
Chapter? Probably the brave monk's. Now, favorite weapon, though?
>Akimbo flintlock pistols
Benjamin Lewis
I started with the nes but the ps1 is my favorite console of all. I can play ps1 games for the first time today and love it just the same as the ones I played as a kid, but I still recognize that it's pretty much nostalgia anyway, because it's not just for the things you personally liked but the era itself so even the "new" stuff you didn't play before can invoke the same nostalgia. And that's ok.
Dude what? This isn't a horror game. There is no such thing as a fucking horror game. This is a beatemup with a horror setting. That said, it's pretty great, since all games with horror settings need really damn good atmosphere to be good, this one really nails it.
But no, there are games with better atmospheres dude. Alien: Isolation and Resident Evil 2 remake come to mind.
Jackson Rivera
>better atmospheres While I love A:I and really enjoyed REmake 2, you're full of shit. ED has a top tier atmosphere.
So can we all agree that Eternal Darkness was a fluke success and Silicon Knights were a one hit wonder?
Logan Ortiz
Didn't they do Legacy of Kain?
Camden Harris
Silicon Knights doesn't exist anymore. Nintendo owns a trademark for "Eternal Darkness"; therefore, any sequel has to go through them or have a different name.
Hudson Cook
I liked The Twin Snakes
Blake Walker
Story is alright I guess, hate that you can't skip cutscenes Combat with melee weapons is way too easy, with firearms it's way too useless The sanity meter is a nice gimmick but gets old fast The game isn't scary at all, but pretty atmospheric
Xavier Sanchez
No, you dumb fucking retard. They did the original Blood Omen which started the LoK series. The also did Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for gamecube.
Zachary Kelly
>you can't skip cutscenes You can if you have seen them before (with this alignment)
Matthew Garcia
I didn't beat it yet, I died and had to reload a save. Noted
i'll hack & slash your penis off you tranny faggot
Ayden Fisher
>Literally blame PewDiePie and Amnesia for horror games going to shit. Can you explain why? I never watched Pewdiepie and I enjoyed Amnesia a lot
Gavin Nguyen
Developer who made Penumbra decided to make one that doesn't have combat and all the let's players jumped on it.
BTW play Penumbra.
Eli Morgan
Penumbra: Black Plague didn't have combat and it was released before his Amnesia Let's Plays got popular
John Johnson
It was jank but you could stun enemies. Or was that just overture?
Thomas Turner
Overture had combat Black Plague is the same as Amnesia in that you can stun enemies
Evan Perez
I played all 3 parts of Penumbra I liked Black Plague actually more than Overtue, partly because of the limited combat options By your logic whe shouldve had plenty of games like Amnesia after its success, I fucking wish
Robert Baker
>By your logic whe shouldve had plenty of games like Amnesia after its success, I fucking wish I mean we literally fucking did. It's just none of them were as good as Amnesia.
Colton Bell
The gaming industry has totally ballooned money-wise. Making video games has become much more expensive and third person horror games like Eternal Darkness or Silent Hill are more niche now. Most publishers are more interested in your tried and true AAA schlock that’s by the book and designed by committee, because that’s what has potential to be more successful and lucrative.
Not him but is it any good? Didnt even know of its existence until this thread
Kevin Martinez
do you live under a rock? it's probably the best game of the year
Jose Anderson
I know they’re still being made dingus, I’m saying that publishers are less likely to take risks or try new things. Like shit, this was a remake of a beloved game from a hugely successful franchise. What other good, non-indie horror games have come out in the past few years?
Logan Myers
I kind of do When I was younger I was always scared about the possability of losing interest in video games, because my mind would be occupied with adult stuff and also a lack of time. I just realized I'm already there.
The game looks amazing emulated in 4k on Dolphin. It really still holds up. The graphics aren't shitty at all, they were just held back by the Gamecube's shitty resolution. The game has built-in widescreen support too which is pretty rare in the SD era so it still looks and plays well when emulated
