How much does the front/back row mechanic play into the game? I thought I was being strategic by picking barret and putting him in the back to reduce damage, but I never noticed it making much of a difference.

Tifa with oversoul carries you for the whole game (cursed ring and the anti-insta death enemy skill are nice additions)

Cloud for mixed DPS/Aeris then Yuffie for healing support/Vincent for offensive casting. Just the way I like to play RPGs.

I made the joke that it ends after Don Corneo's mansion back when it was announced the game was being split into multiple parts. Now the furthest thing we've seen from any of the trailers is Aps the boss at the end of Don Coreno's mansion... so I'm starting to think maybe I was right after-all.

Whoever had the best limit breaks at the time. Characters were so completely malleable that their actual class and intended playstyle didn't matter one you slapped enough materia on them. The only thing that made them different was their limits, and the best limits were always the ones with the most hits.

Single-hit limits almost universally sucked.

Thats when I knew he sucked major balls unless you powerlevel him up to level 99 and make each hit for 9999

Yuffie's Conformer didn't suffer a damage penalty when using Morph, which made her amazing for grinding Sources in the plane and murdering just about anything else.

Hell yes. I put the mega-all and steal in Tifa. Get her up to her limit break and she can mug all day and hit max damage. CID got slash all and added effect Hades.

7's aren't a glitch

Where’s Aeris?

backrow + sadness pretty much makes you invincible. backrow is 50% damage reduction and sadness is a further 30% reduction.
pair with an accessory like the zeidrich and you are out and out indestructible unless the enemy has a "shoot" damage ability, those ignore all defences.

I did Tifa and Cid on a recent playthrough and shit was great though. Tifa's final limit kicks ass.

but why would reeve dance to make him feel better, reeve would be just a torn up over the death as the rest of them. it's as though they forget that cait sith isnt actually a real character.
Just like how we are "supposed" to be sad a toy gets crushed at the temple? and reeve just sends another instantly to join the party..

Back in the day I tried doing a bunch of goofy shit with Gameshark, but if Sephiroth or Aerith were in your party, the game would crash any time there was a cutscene where you interacted with them.

Or you give him the Venus Gospel, which increases in power based on his MP that you'll never need to use, and see all those hits do 7,000 each.

I don't remember there being much of a difference between any of the characters until you got their ultimate weapons, but I also didn't mind grinding as a kid so I probably brute forced my way through everything. Was Tifa bad?

I'm currently on my first playthrough, rolling Yuffie and Vincent everywhere just because I think they might have the funniest dialogue

For most of the game, she's fine. But her ultimate weapon is fucking terrible, and while her Limit Break is great early on, it has the same problem as Cyan's skills did in FF6. It just takes too long to get it off, and the enemy is free to fuck your ass while you're waiting for the slots to spin, and there's a good chance that it'll end up doing jack shit if you mash through. Even at max potential, it's nowhere near as good as Cloud, Cid, or Barret's limits. And after that, she's stuck doing something like 25% damage until her bar starts filling back up.

She can give reliable damage if you equip the Godhand instead and spam Deathblow, since it's a 255% accurate weapon. But by then you have access to things like Mug, Doublecut, and Slash-All, so it's too little, too late. The Powersoul combo can do a ton of damage too, but requires so much setup that you can't really use it outside of boss fights.

Tifa isn't so bad that you can't win the game with her in your party, but she's easily the least optimal member of the group. A simple tweak to Premium Heart's damage calculation and removal of the slots from her Limit would catapult her to one of the top spots, too, so it's even more frustrating.

Wasn't there a problem of accidentally overflowing damage output if you got so powerful that you wrapped around and went back to doing only double digits again? I remember hearing someone complain to me about that happening.

Could only be done with Vincent and Barret, because of the way their ultimate weapons worked. Barret's weapon got stronger based on the amount of AP the Materia equipped on it had, so filling it with Mastered Knights of the Round Materia made it overflow. Vincent's increased based on the number of enemies he'd killed, so if you had him kill trash mobs for hours on end, it'd overflow, too. Both methods take an absurd amount of time though, so it's more of a trick for min-maxers than anything a normal player could try to do to beat tough bosses.

Cloud + Barret + Yuffie/Cid are in theory the best combo.
But since that doesn't really matter because the only time you need to maximize your damage is for the armas and there's still very boring button massing strategies I stick with Red and Vincent because they look cooler.
