The character designs in the older games were better

Arstyle and character design are completely different things. Kubo is nowhere near generic, he's one of the most distinguishable artists from Shounen Jump. Still, the new designs are kind of bland. As long as this means we never have to see the furry enemies and other stupid garbage anymore, I'm ok with it.

I like this one more than the old one. I'm not super worried about how dull the characters seem so far, because the original cast was pretty dull too until you got to know them a bit more.

I honestly think Kubo's 2D drawing/concept art of the new Shin Sakura Taisen is dope as hell. It's the move to 3D where it lost some of its Kubo-charm. Can't believe RAITA's art can be more readily transferred to 3D compared to Kubo.
