Its pretty bad for a DQ game dungeon and mechanics wise

This is the first game that expanded the combat since 2 unless you count tactics from 4. Dungeon design was definitely downgraded from 4 in my opinion.

Expanded combat by having only 3 party members and monsters being a gamble if they were going to be useful later or not and having like 2 spells each?

No. Best DQ game by a pretty good margin though.

Yes, the monster catching mechanic was fun, but attacks finally redirect if the enemy group was killed and they added boomerangs which hit all enemies and whips that hit groups of enemies. Combat was drastically sped up too, thank god. There's probably more since I never beat this game.

Ah see I dont really think thats an objective improvement, it rewards knowledge of the enemy and your party when you know if you can kill them with one or three hits.
whips are nice boomerangs always felt kind overpowered or cheating

4 had a boomerang. 5 just had boomerangs in more than one flavor of damage
