I bought Guild Wars 2 because of Thief skill presentation trailers shown before game launched. Then I played the game and thief was a fucking useless mess that made me leave the game. Haven't touched the game since then.

On a website he asked them to study, he put in an ad for a specific pill, like Zoloft for example. Then, several weeks later, on one of his tests, he put a multiple choice question where he asked his students what pill they would recommend. They all overwhelmingly chose the pill he stealthily advertised.

Advertisements hit you on a subconscious level. People have a bias to choose the name the recognize over the name they don't. When you walk into a store and have to make a choice between hundreds of different name brands, you will choose the one you recognize 99 out of 100 times. THAT is why advertisement is effective. It's not about convincing you they have a superior product, it's about planting a seed in your mind and tying it to some kind of positive association.

It affects you no matter what, the more a brand is blasted at you, the more likely you are to pick it in the heat of the moment. It's why Coke still advertises everywhere despite everyone already knowing it, it's to make sure you default to it when buying soda.

I only purchase or go do something I see in an ad maybe once every few months, and even then 90% of the time it would have been something i'd have been interested in regardless and the ad just made me aware a sale was going on, etc.

I'm sure there's some unconcious effect but for the most part I don't seem that influenced by them. Maybe it's because I legit have aspergers and we tend to be less susceptble to contextual biases and instead make more "objective" /overly literal value judgements
