How do we fix the horror genre?
How do we fix the horror genre?
please don't post this.
serial killer or detective based games. No magic or ghosts or demons for cheap jump scares, focus on world building and paranoia and dread
Ban all terror media for a century to reset desensitization.
I've always wanted to make a game to capture the feel of being a paranormal/conspiracy fan in the 80s/early 90s. Old BBS nets, a lot of hearsay, and most of your information coming in from articles and rented VHS tapes.
make them fun
Horror games ship with a dose of LSD and an adrenaline shot
Is Observer good? I dont mind walking sims if they have a good setting/story (like SOMA)
Alien Isolation was plenty scary although once you became savvy to the Alien, hiding from it does get routine
period piece detective drama. You could set it in the 1980s or 1990s, no games really explore those time periods, and with a lot of computer and DNA methods still rough it could give you enough help but wont hold your hand
>nobody posted it yet
Be careful newfriends!
This. Honestly, horror games won’t get good until VR is acessible and someone come up with an ARGMMO type of game where people tries to find out who the killer is, and the serial killer being played by an GM or the creator himself would be dope, and each season they’ll be a new story or some so.
It could also be great to showcase just how absolutely out there the rumor mill could get during that time frame. This was the period of time where a still-frame image of a shadow fooled a large portion of the world into thinking that Nessie was real.
My only problem is that I'm not sure what the main goal or activity of the game should be.
stop trying to do epic twists and multi layered stories. Keep it simple. Have a monster in a location trying to kill you and you have to fight it, at first its too strong but slowly you learn about it and how to exploit its weaknesses
then build a basic story around that
We had so many multiplayer serial killer games but no one seems to get it right. I think its the fact the luster goes away and it becomes "gamey"
Oh fuck you
Jump scares and none of that "spooky sounds or ambiance". I don't want to wait around for nothing to happen. I want to be at the edge of my seat with my dick wrapped around ten times over in terror.
Fucking kek
Imagine how terrifying a game you could make if you didn't try to hold it back for the sake of censors or mass market appeal, and based it off of how humans really treat each other.
en.wikipedia.org
(Cartel executions can go here too).
you totally know these threads end up with shitty opinions, bait and people calling everyone a soiboy
you described literally every thread on Yea Forums, good job
>play as two characters
>a detective and a young child
>serial killer has been stalking your quaint small town
>he leaves evidence using cryptic videos and pictures that you have to decipher
>small map, but open world so you travel all over collecting clues
>detective is stronger and has a gun, but limited in his abilities where the kid is the total opposite
>the choices you make can alter the story and who helps you, who dies, who is against you
>epic twist is the killer is part of a cult or something and using the intent to converse with other members
>you discover this halfway in the story, letting you get paranoid with gang stalking
or just have rockstar make manhunt 3
make a fake bootlegged game, you know, like those of the creepy pastas
kid games that are supposedly haunted and shit
I mean, I'd play that, but I really wouldn't want to include a "human" element of a serial killer in there, unless it was something like the MIB or something human-like like aliens. I imagine more cryptids/ET stuff than a murder mystery.
So what the fuck was the story behind this anyway?
Daily reminder, this man was stabbed dozens of times, had his eyeballs eaten, and was eventually dismembered by a man name Vincent Li.
Daily reminder due to Canada's fucked up Laws, Vincent Li is a completely free man. He's not even required to see a doctor. He was in a mental hospital for less than a decade.
Get rid of these stupid hide and run horror games
More horror games that are first person and with action elements. literally every single good horror game is an action game.
Stop trying to give them ultra realistic graphics
It may sound weird but this makes enemies and environments WAY less scary.
Less music
focus on good level and enemy design
A good example of an amazing horror game is Cry of fear. It was originally a mod for gold source but the full game is on steam for free. I would HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't played it already.
The same person also made a hl1 mod called afraid of monsters which was pretty neat
Interesting
Gus?
thats not necessarily horror, but just gore for edgy fags
this board is for people over 18, plebbitfag
What if we made a game with all the common phobias?
This poor dude didn't deserve what he got.
it would probably be funny more than scary
try to feel scared over clowns when you dont fear them for example
yeah, but have a phobia for everything.
Make a game like Return of the Obra Dinn, except you're exploring a city or neighborhood and everything unfolds in real-time. Maybe even make it so the crimes are occurring as you investigate them, so there's both an element of urgency in trying to prevent more crimes from happening and a sense of dread that you might actually run into the perpetrator at some point.
Actually underage more realism means more uncanny valley which adds to the spook.
>murder and cannibalize a man
>claim god told you to do it
>unconditionally released
Watch the documentary "Dear Zachary" for more wacky misadventures starring Canada's legal system! There's something for the whole family in this one!
Yikes
Instead of being a retard you could actually contribute to the thread
If you don't like my post, why don't you make a snarky response to it with actually criticism
Like damn dude, this board is for people over 18 plebbitfag
Making streaming horror games forbidden on YouTube and Twitch.
Bob's your uncle.
>open ocean
>sinking boat
>chug along from port to port getting supplies while your shoddy boat is repaired
>chased by sharks, whales, squid, ect while working towards some objective
Not him but this has to be the most butthurt reply i've seen in ages
>obscene and depraved methods of torture don't count as forms of horror
I don't know, the idea of being kept alive for days while I'm slowly devoured by bugs is a lot more terrifying to me than some shitty jumpscare or spooky music.
>more realism means more uncanny valley which adds to the spook
Not him, but I disagree. Maybe I've just gotten used to it, but I almost never get "uncanny valley" feelings from photorealistic games any more, and when they're trying to be spooky or scary I just can't find them truly believable and I don't get immersed. Whereas something with a more surreal artstyle will conjure up all kinds of uncomfortable feelings in me.
Yeah, I've seen Dear Zachary.
>First Degree Murder is a crime specific in nature so you're not a threat to the general public
Quality legal system they got up there.
I want to see more "real" settings instead of supernatural monsters or beings that haunt you, I think there are enough places and situations in our current world that are extremely haunting to think about.
A setting I thought of was you're in some South American shithole about to get your organs cut out and sold off on the black market and the game would be about escaping that very horror.
Canada would be a God tier setting. You know, since they never lock up their murderers
>Uncanny valley is everything
Your only experience with horror games is walking sims isn't it user?
Because to make something scary you don't need atmosphere or ambiance or tension, you just need creepy looking things
Actually underage.
for the victim, but the observer not so much
Do you guys like horror games with meta elements? Breaking the fourth wall etc.
>post apocalyptic
>its just modern day Detroit
No, it's cringe and tryhard.
this is the same guy that used to be on the world of warcraft team back in the day before he jumped to the diablo 3 team.
>mind blown
I like re out break because everything slowly goes down hill
how would that work?
only if you could die irl if you die in the game
>for the victim, but the observer not so much
I don't know, the average person isn't exactly immunized against hardcore violence the way most of us are (I mean, even then, the meme of Yea Forums being a gore-infested shock-site is long, long gone).
He was a retarded schizo paperboy and one of his coworkers claims one of the last issues they were delivering before the incident featured some bullshit about wendigos. Assuming that's the truth it probably inspired him to do what he did.
You need a mix of multiple things user but "Bang Bang Pew Pew!" Isn't exactly scary either.
Even his mom didn't want him released, and protested it. Think about that.
a horror game where you have to escape from the cartel could be interesting
Yo I got it you're being chased but your pov is from the bad guys pov so he has to be close at all times so you can see where you're going.
like rayman
People may tell you otherwise; but the real horror story in this case is the Canadian justice system.
who is this semen demon
Simple but effective premise but I would only have you hunted by one or two sharks.
Maybe have your ultimate goal being to recover some sunken treasure but you don't have the equipment for it so you take small jobs in order to upgrade your gear?
It is interesting to an extent, but quickly becomes fairly repetitive.
It also isn't really scary.
When will he feast again?
Isn't that alien isolation?
Why hasn't anyone put a bullet in this Li fucker already?
Tall Woman from Fatal Frame 5.
I'm waiting for the day he migrates to the US, and I take a bus somewhere, and he sits next to me.
I would love to have a game that's basically the movie Alien, but unscripted. You're on board a huge ship that you have completely open access to, and some monster has come aboard and is slaughtering the crew. It's all dynamic and unscripted, with the monster behaving based on a free-roaming AI. The ship itself has detailed systems, simulated in real-time and connected in realistic ways so that systems can be up or down, power can be routed and re-routed, things might need to be repaired, you or the monster might sabotage certain areas or systems in order to force the other to behave in a certain way... The goal of the game is to find a way to kill the monster in this big open simulated environment.
When Alien Isolation was first coming out and the developers kept going on and on about the xenomorph AI and how dynamic everything was, this was the game I was imagining. But then it turned out to be a scripted, linear story game instead and I was immeasurably disappointed. I just want to be put on a ship and forced to think on my feet in a real-time game of cat and mouse.
horror game that takes place in broad daylight in a busy and noisy city
doesnt even have to be supernatural, just have some killer/assassin and a shitload of bystander effect goin on
utlize the fact that things are crowded to allow for pursuers to hide in plain sight, or for there to be a random amount of multiple foes
one thing that comes to mind is the hitman games where certain levels had counter-assassin characters that would try and get you first, but 47 is a killing machine so the suspense isnt as great
simple concept would be have a week where you have to go about and do chores or some shit who cares each day while maybe vaguely noticing someone or some people keeping an eye on you.
you could have a daily task thats always the same, and if you go about it the same way or time each day its easier for them to plan your movement and nab you. then throw in some random generated tasks too.
maybe you just go a whole day or two with nobody actively going for you and you are just paranoid as fuck the whole time
The worst is Karla Holmoka is roaming free.
The bystander effect would be really cool to see used in a game. Just people attacking you and a crowd watching would be nuts.
Blame autism. Someone would beat it in 15 seconds and ruin the game and tank sales. Devs go out of their way now to pad out games because idiots like to break them and spoil everything immediately.
Jesus fucking Christ. What a fucked up random act of pure brutality. He didn't get prison time? He should have his skull caved in
You guys see the crime scene photos? He cut out the dudes eyes, tongue, and ears and had them in his pockets and then displayed the head to the passengers outside of the bus. Making them vomit and faint
I know a bunch of guys that want to make something like this a la farcry 3 but horror, they even want to base it on the killing of Mark Killroy, too bad we live in mexico and making that would be like asking to be beheaded
