Exactly this, remaster/akes should either be the exact same game running at modern resolutions and framerates, or a re-imagining. A remake is necessarily a reinterpretation, so one where the Developers have to try to guess at original intentions is one that loses something versus one where the developer is free to reinterpret. RE1/2 and REmake1/2 are both good games and both worth playing in their own right, which is much more interesting than SOTC where the ps4 remake is just a lesser version of a game

Artstyle is literally the best Crash has had since PS1. The character designs are all faithful and clean looking.
And, like way too many other people, you're overestimating the physics changes. Literally just some jumps are tighter. That's it. The nature of Crash's pillbox means you get extra time to begin your jump, since you can run off of platforms and still jump, and that completely makes up for his heavier descent. I've 100%ed both trilogies and I only ever noticed the changed physics with some slightly tighter jumps in 1, and literally only that one bonus jump in 2.

The physics are kind of fucked in the PS3 version and the pop-in is just as bad as it was on the PS2. If you can get past those big caveats, it's a good port.

REmake doesn't "retain" the soul of RE1, but I'd say it captures an entirely different, but equally strong, variant of soul. The atmosphere is completely different, and has its own value.

SotC for PS4 could have had 100x more SOUL than the PS2 version, but it was made by total hacks. The technical capabilities of the PS4 allow for an insane amount of SOUL with advanced lighting engines (the most important aspect of graphics), but the talent in that area usually gets sucked up by films. The best of the best in lighting will go to work on CGI/cartoon animation on big budget films vs. the pithy salary of AAA games.

"Soul" is a blanket term used to describe numerous features and properties that a game shows resulting in increased feelings of mystery, wonder and charm in a game.

Lighting is incredibly important and underappreciated. Relatively simple models and textures can be made unbelievable by a solid lighting system. SotC for PS2, along with cartoon shaded games like Wind Waker, Kingdom Hearts, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, etc, all reached timeless graphics with a good lighting solution.

I just wish KH2 and KH in general's cutscene direction was better. I've been playing the FFXII remaster recently (which also holds up amazingly at high resolutions, though the remaster has a lot of two steps forward one step back) and its presentation and cutscene direction is so far ahead of everything else Square Enix did on PS2 and even a lot of what they've done since then that it's almost ridiculous.

The art direction in the original makes heavy use of shadows and ambient lighting to portray feelings of mystery, dread, and desolation. Every area in the remake is lit the exact same. The art choices the original made are completely ignored for high fidelity graphics which add nothing to the experience after a certain point. Framerate is the only remotely valid point but couldn't that have been better solved with a port rather than a full on remake?

PS2 is the classic, but the framerate can just tank and it tries to hide this with ridiculously strong motion blur.
PS3 looks fantastic and runs at a mostly stable 30fps, but has some physics glitches that can make some fights a bit more frustrating.
You can probably just emulate it and get the best of both worlds, I'm pretty sure it actually works properly in PCSX2 these days.

MW4 is a borderline case. It has far more new assets than the average remaster (which really is just a fancy name for a port) but is still heavily based off the original code, at least in the campaign.
The completely overhauled multiplayer has me leaning more towards remake but there's a solid argument to be made the other way too.

The original does have a dreamier mood and atmosphere. But you could tell Bluepoint went to lengths to capture that enigmatic atmosphere. The lighting and weather effects really pushed the feel that the original had nothing on.

That scene was symbolizing the conclusion of the adventure. The weather in the game gets progressively worse as you get further into it, climaxing with that bad thunderstorm. After the fight the skies clear and you get to see that heavenly sky in all its glory for the last time before the game ends. You finish your quest to kill the collosi, the skies clear, and then comes the final cutscenes. The music plays around that event perfectly as well.

You, who probably hasn't even played the game, clearly don't understand how intentional the scene was. The shitlords a Bluehole were like "lol nah let's cut that touch" if they even had the IQ to understand it in the first place. They didn't even bother to remove the rainclouds to give it that kino clear skies good times ahead implication. It's one of the most impactful cinematic tropes and Bluehole fucked it up completely in favor of muh graphics.

100%, I'm more interested in preserving the original hardware. I used to emulate a ton when I was younger and too poor to afford the real thing. These days back up loading on real hardware has opened up the doors to amazing things with the PS3 being no exception thanks to the most recent major exploits. It's a great time to tinker with Consoles. Most PC gamers think the solution is to throw more money at the problem, but it's far more gratifying and interesting to engage with the games as intended, but tinker with the real hardware to get the most out of them. It's a bit too technical for the average PC gamer's stunted brain, but it's alright, it's just not for them. They can settle for games I played 10 years ago.

One things developers now do is rely too heavily on lighting engine techniques, instead of methods used in older titles during that generation. Being using a flat plane, or a single layer mesh and having it as a set color and having a slight light effect around it to generate like. Like in these images here, Where the light is actually a texture with a light source coming out of it. It's not something you can do with light effects directly. It's practically a god damn lost technique at this point, despite being heavily used on the Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube from Japanese Developers.

It's called art of adversity and with the advent of easier asset creation it usually dilutes the artistic effort to get the best out of what you have.
