Depends on your definition of "going to shit". If you want to know, the game turns into a metroidvania halfway through. That is, you revisit all the stages that had been linear previously but doing stuff that allows you to open new paths. If you consider that "going to shit" then you probably won't enjoy about half the game. Otherwise I thought it was pretty good.

the linear parts of it are fun and designed pretty well, but the metroidvania parts that they tried to do were really poorly done and basically just duct taped on to the linear segments that you already went through. they should have committed to one or the other.

Yes. The latter part of the game can drag on a little bit but New Game + will allow you to pick a random quest item at the start which can speed up your game quite significantly (e.g. choosing the Magic Firefly can pretty much end up in you skipping three whole areas of the map) as well as increasing the cost of revival. The DLC is also pretty fun and allows you to play in Ironman mode, if you're really looking for a challenge. Also, soundtrack is rad as fuck:

It does have issues but it's overall a quite smooth and enjoyable experience.
