Sakurai favoritism still happened, just not with the character people expected. Incineroar only happened because Masahiro loves wrestling.

This is why the fanbase is so shit, most people would rather fight about than have fun. It’s ironic since smash is more of a party game than a fighting game. I feel like the fanbase has gotten worse since ultimate was announced and that was over a year ago.

So smash is now essentially politics

The thing that ruined it was the ballot, it changed from people having even somewhat legitimate basis for wanting their characters in to just yelling about fan demand, plus all the people who's characters didn't make it were forever burned since Sakurai said straight up he doesn't care what people want, Incineroar and Plant are getting in instead.

Combine this with the already growing mentality that X-character supporters are treated as their own fanbase and you have constant civil wars breaking out between people who like Smash just because one guy likes Shantae and someone else like Dee or something.

It's not getting any better though, since Banjo shows as long as you yell long and hard enough you can make it in, this is going to continue forever till all the "big" characters make it and we're left fighting over Lip and Kumatora or something.

I thinks people at this period thought Sakurai Bias extended to everything Kirby and not the 4 games he worked on.

This basically, Sakurai bias today means Fire Emblem, early Kirby games and characters he was personally paid to put in like how TCPI gave him Incineroar over the heaps of interesting Gen 7 picks.

That was more of a Brawl era thing though. The image made during the ballot. Kirby just got two new stages and another assist trophy, but they're all from Sakurai's games.

To be fair this was for the Sm4sh ballot, and none of them made it in back then.
Of course voting for them there might have contributed to their inclusion this time.
