Zero K's good if you stick strictly to skirmish. The campaign is imbalanced as fuck due to the combination of the devs constantly fiddling with unit stats without updating the campaign, and a lot of the missions being badly designed in general. The multiplayer is pretty ded as well.
Still, the game is addictive as fuck.
renegade x is a cross between fps and rts.
Theres nothing, is there? I play some Anno 1800, and its damn good, but its not really scratching that itch for strategy

How exactly? I haven't played unmodded campaigns in several years but each time I did it was fine.

I had to load a save from 2009 to see that cranes really can't build even basic defences. Every half-decent mod out there apparently adds this ability back so I got this much used to it.
Is this the only problem with 1.09 for you?
you can always try to go for the older games you haven't played.
I suggest armies of exigo, kingdoms under fire a war of heroes, paraworld, rise of legends, original war and heroes of anihilated empires.
Also look out for mods like the edain mod for BFME2 and the ultimate apocalypse mod for Dow soulstorm.
Why was that ability even removed?
To a much lesser extent and mostly serving as means of executing strategy. As it should be in a strategy game.
SC very often boils down to "I'll win if I manage to micro X under Y circumstances" with some very basic, few step stratagem serving as means of setting up those circumstances. No one in their right mind would claim that SC is completely devoid of strategy, but the same is also true for games that are literally called tactical games.

There is zero strategy in both SC and C&C.
Neither game has large enough scale over long enough time for strategy.

Air dominance, map control (better intelligence and response time), frequent harassment (which is SC excels at for obvious reasons), quick growth of resource-gathering (more bases or whatever) to fuel military unit production, turtling for some kind of gimmick so it isn't just suicide, feint, multi-pronged attack (two fronts etc.), infiltration to fuck up something important behind enemy lines (SC abuses this to hell and back).
Unless you only consider 4+ hour Setons Crotch able of supporting strategic play, of course.
