I've only played 3 and New Vegas, but I'm thinking about finally playing the first two. Is there any heads up Yea Forums can give me so I'm not going in blind?

you only get one chance to play a game blind
just go for it

Why are zoomers like this? Why wouldn't you play a game blind for the first playthrough?

Just play it. Don't ask.

in 1 start with a combat character or be prepared to run away a lot in the intro. 2 you can be a pure diplomat if you want.

other than that, just go for it

Have you played any non 3D RPG before? If not, you'll need a lot of patience at the beginning. Also read the manual.

Don't expect anything like 3 or NV is the best advice I can give you.

The other thing you should know is a feature that modern gamers may not be familiar, because UX is much more pushed than UI these days, and that's the skilldex, where you can directly use your skills to interact with environment. From there keep and open mind about the gameplay and be experimental with how you solve situations.

Int. is very important unless you know what you’re doing. You’ll probably hate the games anyway so I won’t bother posting anything else.

Dont tell me you actually got far in fallout 1 and 2 without having to start over a few times because you made a shitty build.

First is quite straightforward, invest in normal weapons, you don't get any energy weapons until later on and even if they are broken as hell it makes for a very rough start. You won't do much fighting but every fight is critical so savescum like a fucker.

For Fallout 2 you need to know two things: you can get a car which makes the game way better since everything is fucking far, you can get it in like the first or second town, look it up if you don't find it.
Second thing you need to know is that if you are dressed as a faction you can sneak in their base but you need to go alone, without allies, there are parts that are absolute bullshit if you walk around like a thread, avoid if possible.

check out how to build a strong character but other than that just play the game man

max agility
drunk charisma in the fucking trash garbage can
always take gifted as your first trait.
Never invest in outdoorsman.
For fallout 1 you can get away with tagging guns, but for fallout 2 you're gonna have to make sure to tag either melee or unarmed if you want to actually kill anything in the early game. There's a 10mm pistol in the rat caves under Klamath but you have to kill a bunch of enemies including a boss enemy to get to it.

During the temple of trials in fallout 2, in the second part, there's an area where you come across a bunch of pressure plates. If you're careful you can use the traps skill to disarm them all. They give 25xp each and it's a good source of early game experience.

My advice is don't invest in any shitty skills. Tag either first aid or doctor so you can heal yourself since healing chems and items are scarce and also expensive, so you want to hang onto them for fights.

If you're doing a melee build make sure you do the quest in new reno where you shut down the stills for that one lady so you can get the louisville slugger which is IMO the best melee weapon in the game.

never wonder too far south unless you want to get assraped by high level enemies and lose possibly hours of progress because you forgot to save your game.

Also the trading system in both games is an actual trading system, so make sure you don't accidentally sell all your shit for nothing because you thought you were getting the value of the items back in caps. You gotta actually trade for stuff I.E put the stuff you have up to offer and select the things you want in exchange.

MAX LUCK JINXED IS THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY

as long as your agility and endurance is high the game is pisseasy, especially in the later parts of the game but my advice would be play it and figure out everything for yourself. The minute I stopped relying on guides and shit to help me play FO1 was the minute I started having fun.

i didnt make a bard build so no

this only happens when you go in with a 3D fallout mindset

forgot to mention that you can savescum pickpocket everyone for easy caps/xp but this is time consuming and also kind of frustrating. Not sure how exactly the pickpocket mechanics go but I once got 200% steal and sneak and I still never managed to get an entire inventory at one time. You gotta basically force people to drink rotgut and healing powder to tank their perception before you can actually get away with pickpocketing 200 caps one by one. FYI this will net you a FUCK TON of xp since XP you earn from pickpocketing goes up the more items you steal at once time.

you forgot unarmed

You are right, my bad

Fallout 1 and 2 are one of the few games where I'd say reading about them and checking out a couple of beginner's guides will help you out in the long term.

You can easily make a bad build in FO2 that will just make your playthrough very tedious and boring.

max AGI unless you want to softlock yourself from the majority of the game.
Also don't even touch outdoorsman. That skill is fucking useless.

I would rather start over a few times than be unsurprised by anything

find build guides and go blind for the rest. its actually good to replay so u dont have to feel bad for doing something bad first time.
and try restoration mod! brings a lot

no, but I find that my enjoyment of a game is greatly increased when I learn the mechanics by myself, through personal failures and subsequent lessons learned

i think its avalible to both games
