Sony made their money back by many orders of magnitude on just the Raimi trilogy alone. Even they know they can't handle the IP correctly. (Even the first and second Raimi movies, even though they're just about the best superhero movies ever made, and the reason the MCU exists at all. They set a bad precedent that only really set in on the third.)
Sony only own the Movie rights. Disney still owns the merchandising and comic book etc. rights.
