Shields for the most part of their existence were made out of wood. Full plate + metal shield is going to be a heavy combination, especially if the armour is incredibly thick If the guy can afford such armour and shield, then I'm sure he can enhance his armour. You can even save some money by buying unpolished armour and then just painting it to protect it from rust. Pretty sure polishing was 80% of armour's price
Also, hand and a half sword + shield is a poor combination, because handle will get in the way.
