No gen has come close to the appeal of the gen 1 starter's first forms. Gen 2 and 3 were solid. Gen 4 and 6 were pretty generic and uninteresting. While having a very different design philosophy from gen 1, the gen 7 starters were actually the best we've had in a long time and had a lot of promise for what they could potentially evolve into. Unfortunately their final forms turned out to be dogshit.

They made all the starters generic reptiles. Later generations fixed that so you actually have to make a choice instead of picking the reptile, the reptile, or the reptile.
