Shit not rendering only happens at the very start the very first time you play it because it has to compile all the shaders. I had models taking a while to render for like the first 5 minutes but then after that it basically ran perfectly, 30FPS no dips no graphical or audio or physics glitches or anything. I was honestly shocked ahow fucking good PS3 emulation is getting.

It's arguably better than Dark Souls though.

DeS has faster gameplay, and the worlds are all pretty good quality; DaS really falls apart after Anor Londo.

More of a mysterious/horror atmosphere too, as opposed to DaS's more melancholy atmosphere.

It's one of my favorite games even though I played the 25fps version on PS3. It was a pleasant surprise after having played Dark Souls and it's depressing sequel. I was yearning for a new souls experience that would match the first one I played (DaS), and Demon's Souls really delivered. The game has a lot of charm and I would highly recommend it

Duke's is a little disappointing and Lost Izalith is terrible, but I genuinely think the other areas are great.

Yeah Dark Souls 3 didn't really scratch my itch, which is confusing because Demon's Souls did and it wasn't even my first souls game.
I can't really pinpoint anything bad with 3, it's clearly a decent game with a lot of effort put into it, but I just personally didn't have fun exploring the areas or fighting the bosses

I never understood why people say Anor Londo is good either, it looks good visually but as as a level, Anor Londo is total trash.
There's no room for exploration, the level is really mostly just a linear single corridor if you ignore the visual spectacle. O&S is the only redeemable part.
Plus, once you kill Gwynevere then it has this horrid glitch where dying will make you respawn at an inactive bonfire for no reason, and at that point you just have to either walk alll the way back to the cathedral to invade OR you need to walk back to sen's, go to sen's bonfire, then warp back to the princess's chamber just to continue invading

Back when nobody thought twice about cheesing everything as safely as they could and never worried about """builds""".
Now souls players are infested with people who act like they have something to prove.

I feel like the main reason for that change is because of From completely fucking up the invasion mechanic in Dark Souls. The invasion item is locked behind a late game boss fight so any invaders people encounter in the starting areas are gonna be so one-sided they're not even worth trying unless you can score a lucky environmental kill. That kills any tension in invasions and just turns them into either a one-sided gank or a honorable duel.

God I miss picking up items from the overworld. Having them all just be shiny spots now takes the excitement out of it.

Ill give my specs because I consider them pretty low grade budget for a modern PC but I would consider this the minimum you would need to run DeS well.

I dont see how the bosses are more boring than just "press roll when attack is about to hit you" the newer bosses have a bunch of shonen anime spectacle to them sure, but they arent really all that interesting outside of the "wow so epic" factor. Demon's Souls bosses are more about figuring out weaknesses rather than mechanical execution. Would have been nice to see an alternate timeline where that was carried over and improved in later games instead of every single boss being Flamelurker and Old King Allant.

I already have the game on the PS3, but it runs and looks like dogshit. I tried an emulator before and it ran fine, but it still had some weird graphical glitch because it was constantly loading (have an SSD too)

It was literally just a pvp fight. The invader would usually hide behind the fog gate and wait for the host to climb the tower only to kill him with a wrath of the gods through the wall, it wasn't particularly funny or interesting or anything like that.

People need to stop asking if they can run and just do a quick search on youtube. Just type your CPU, gpu is not that important, the name of the game and the name of the emulator and you'll see hundreds of benchmark videos.

the best memory I have of DeS though, is helping someone through 2-1 as an invader. killing all the enemies for him up to the boss. I would use empty hands when I was around him, and run up to enemies and kill them with a weapon. As we got to the boss gate for the armoured spider, I backstabbed him and killed him.

It has to do with the coloring. DeS compared to the first DaS you'll notice right away despite them being only a few years apart. Dark Souls series seemed to go for more vibrant coloring and lighting. DeS, not that its highly realistic or anything but it seems to learn more on a realism look.

I'm glad people get to experience this on PC, but without the online you're really missing on a whole experience.

Literally this. The first thing I noticed from the transition from DeS to DS was an odd dip in quality. Even more prominent when we got to DS2. When Bloodborne came out, I realized that clearly the A-team that worked on DeS was together again, and a true spiritual successor was made. After a few hours of playing Sekiro, I caught the "B-team Dork Souls" vibe, and dropped it. Didn't much care for the gameplay mechanics either. I actually liked the first Dark Souls. The second one was alright. By the time I got to three, I was tired of it, and couldn't slog through another game that had that gameplay for the third time in a row, but couldn't deliver a cool eerie atmosphere like DeS and BB.

Download the emulator and the game and play the first level, see for yourself if it's playable or not.

Anor Londo is a good level and you don't need some wide open field like this is TES or something to have a good level. It is good precisely because it isn't that. It provides a nice challenge with enemy placements, really great artstyle/visuals for the city, and its got you moving around a bunch of different paths and obstacles. Dark Souls largely has solid level design across the board. Blightown and much of Lost Izalith being exceptions.

You rarely notice async shaders unless your CPU is shit.

Blighttown is one of the best levels in the series, redditor. Souls levels are at their best when they have lots of verticality.

Not with that god awful framerate. Its also full of inconsistent level geometry that can make you fall to your death in dumb ways and just plain ugly textures in general. It had potential but as it is its not great. The Gutter from DaS2 is a lot better with a similar wood structure concept going on.

Just today I finished my first run on the PS3 i specifically bought to play this game, one year ago.
Don't make my stupid mistake: the game throws at you a bastard sword in the first level and a Fire Longsword in the fourth one, very early into the game, along with every material to fully upgrade it. Since fire-based weapons do not scale with stats, I spent time, effort and forty fucking levels improving STR, DEX and upgrading a Quality Flamberge. All of this in preparation to the moment my Fire Longsword would no longer suffice, and I had to resort to a stat-scaling weapon.
In the end, that moment never came. I went through the whole lot of the game with that same Fire Longsword. End game mobs are even weak to fire!

tl;dr: Bastard sword from 1-1, then Fire Longsword from 2-2 on.

What aspects does Demon's Souls do better than DaS?

No one ever mentions the music for this game. I can't describe it but it's just something else, I love it.

Demon's Souls soundtrack actually takes in consideration the boss you're fighting and adds a proper atmosphere to it instead of the generic orchestral stuff that feels completely out of place in the somewhat quiet atmosphere of the other Souls games.

For DaS2 it was because of time constraints and they had to use all the shit they made for the previous version of the game tossed together to make the new one. Depending on the circumstances, the Meat Cleaver Black Phantom in 5-2 and Black Phantom Selen Vinland might be tougher, along with Black Phantom Satsuki. Doran is definitely up there, but not the undisputed strongest NPC. Counting other games, there's the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst as well.

The arena was open yet at the same time had lots of cover in the form of the chairs, and the fog gate allowed for invader and host alike to try various things through the walls. Also, in addition to the Homing Soul Mass spell (which scaled with an invader's INT), it was the one time a player could have their full HP while invading. In fact, if you wore the Cling Ring, you'd have something close to 150% of your otherwise maximum health. IIRC, the way the Cling Ring bonus was calculated didn't add a flat 25% boost.

I'm with him. I loved invading 3-2 but hated when I'd get summoned for the boss fight. It was infinitely more fun to push people off ledges.

Yep, Astraea was full of shit. She hoarded the scant treasures there were and murdered the actual leaders of the area, since Garl's corpse pile is the only place in the game where Shaman Set corpses can be found. What she hated was actually having to do work and be accountable.

Using the ledges is a different matter, but I personally loved being the Old Monk. I even managed to defeat cheese groups and gank squads. It was a perfect place to battle and the chairs and Homing Soul Mass could be surprisingly decisive.

The reason it falls apart is because the level design takes a nosedive and areas rely too heavily on gimmicks to compensate.
Maybe they should have gone with the DS2 route where areas start fine/mediocre and they gradually becomes better and better until the level design and everything else peaks at end-game with the Crown of the Sunken/Iron king/Ivory king DLC's.

to me DeS's true bosses were the areas. They were well thought out instead of just being corridors where they throw 500 retards at you at once and call it a day. The bosses themselves were all gimmicks, but it was fun finding that out on your first playthrough IMO. The bosses that are more like the ones Souls gets nowadays were Flamelurker and False King Allant. Those were challenging in the way people think bosses are challenging in Souls.

My theory is that they didn't include these features in future titles because they probably caused too many new bugs to emerge when they tried to implement them with new gameplay mechanics or maybe they thought climbing over stuff was a shit mechanic and removed it.

Climbing over stuff was used nicely and allowed for good shortcuts that could have been further fleshed out. It also would have prevented the ruinous inanity that was the Shrine of Winter.

Sekiro instantly gave me B team vibes just by looking at the very first two enemies once you got your sword. I aggroed them then went back into the house with the kid just to see how they'd behave near him and... they just kept running into an invisible wall where the door should be. This level of slack and lazyness already sent me the impression that this was just gonna be a mediocre unpolished game. Fortunately, I was wrong, because it was actually terrible

DeS is more fun, for sure.

I like that there's a huge amount of broken builds. DaS went too far towards "balance", which killed it for me. Once they started patching shit for PvP balance I knew it was the beginning of the end (the only thing they got right was fixing scaling in DaS so that it was actually better than just infusing all your shit with lightning)

I mean in DeS there's a spear that actually fucking breaks equipment, its fucking brutal. And even if you're not online they give it to a fucking NPC near the end.

Are there any other games that have the same atmosphere this game has? I can't even describe it well. DeS has this clean sense of style, the sounds are more on the soft/muted side and everything seems so sober. There's this element of stillness to it and everything seems to have been made with a great deal off care and attention, but in an "innocent" way. Even the loading screens and the font they use in dialogues are just so pretty. It just feels like they were trying to create something they genuinely loved and wanted it to be a dark yet pretty "serene" experience.

It feels weird trying to describe it but this game was just something else to me and it felt very different from the other games.

So why is there soul magic and fog gates in Dark Souls?

I fucking LOVED my level 52 archer with Morion Blade, the low hp ring that does the same shit and that other ring that made you completely invisible unless the guy was pretty much in your face. I remember using some meme bow with special white something arrows and having over 1k ATK. I could oneshot absolutely anyone regardless of build. I got a HUGE amount of fanmail and I absolutely loved it. I would sometimes kill that dragon in the first world for the guy I was invading as well, just for funsies. He was supposed to fly and then stay over the door to the place where you fought false king allant, but I'd BTFO him so fast he'd die before he could even attempt to fly. Got lots of messages of people asking me how did I manage to cheat. Really fun times and it's really sad how famous this series got because it attracted all those redditting "gamer" types that think they are hardcore for playing AAA cinematic trash and cried like massive bitches begging for invasions to be nerfed. The other games had their moments with this or that broken shit but they lacked the fun jank.
