That one genre always passed under my radar. I've barely managed to beat a couple of campaigns in Warcraft III back in 00's, but that's it. Always felt like a brainlet trying something out, and the quick thinking aspect makes me stress out incessantly. Is there anything good for a beginner?
How to RTS
check out paradox interactive's stuff
The Dawn of War 2 campaigns are great, though they're more squad based than true RTS. Dawn of War Dark Crusade is a lot of fun but it has that difficulty problem where easy is too easy and medium is too hard for a beginner. Starcraft 2's campaign is a lot of fun too, and manageable even for a beginner.
men of war. the best rts games imo are the ones that allow you to take your time and prepare and not just throw ai units at you
I though they did turn-based stuff? Maybe just confused it with something else.
I guess it's a good time as any to start with the WH games.
Yeah, I'd prefer that. I guess I just don't like being pressured all the time instead of just letting me think about the situation.
If that's your thing i can recommend you 0 ad because in that game everyone is a civilian even soldiers so wars affect your production. It's a free game so give a try if you feel like it.
You should look for RTS games that favour turtling
If you start with the original Dawn of War games I highly recommend Dark Crusade over Soulstorm. They're both very similar but Dark Crusade is much more fleshed out with unique interactions between all the factions, where Soulstorm all the dialogue is generic. Some of the best Warhammer dialogue ever made is from Dark Crusade.
Dawn of War 2 and DoW2 Chaos Rising are both linear stories where you play as Space Marines. DoW2 Retribution has a campaign where you can play as any faction, though it's understandably not as fleshed out because of that.
Men of War is fucking godlike. Incredible games. Not sure I'd recommend to a beginner though.
WC3 is basically a perfect entry into RTS. That or AoE2. Baseline.
the kohan games are slower paced
I don't think I would call Men of War a classical RTS, though. No more than I would Myth or Blitzkrieg, for example.
original war
always
don't listen to DoW2 tards that shit will only teach you to play dow2, which is barely an rts (more like a coh/mow rtt thing)
Play AoE2, starcraft, starcraft 2, wc3. If the game doesn't play like these it isn't an RTS. SC2 and AeE2 are my top recommendations because they are easy to get into and have large playerbases in the west right now with lots of bad players you can beat, well sc2 does for sure and I have heard aoe2 does. You will NEVER learn to play RTS playing single player, this is a multiplayer genre.
Remember that as bad and dumb as you think Yea Forums is at your favourite or preferred games, they are worse and less knowledgeable about RTS.
I feel like I don't have time for RTS games these days.
play dawn of war instead of starcraft clones
>How to RTS
use hotkeys
good news: being efficient is better than being fast
bad news: being efficient requires being fast
perfecting both makes you a korean mastermind, welcome to starcraft ladder
just because you need to be fast doesn't mean you have to be stressed
that is all
The niggers arrived, thread is fucked now
Huh, I'll check a few videos about it later to see if it's my thing, thanks for the tip.
Is playing the original first vital for the lore/plot comprehension? I have a bit of an OCD about doing things as close to to the "right" plot-order as possible.
>That or AoE2.
Holy shit, how did I forget it. I actually really liked it since I was doing pretty good.
Looks kinda hectic, but won't hurt to at least try, I guess
God I hate blizz rts style
fucking cancer
The original Dawn of War? No. Not at all. Most of the games are totally self contained.
don't turtle, but don't be reckless: no matter what game you play, you'll always need a balance of protecting what you have and expanding to get more stuff. this balance will shift depending on what your opponent does, so scouting is key. this can be applied to any RTS and when you know this the only hard part is execution, but it's not as hard as some make it out to be.
i like zero-k you should check it out. best team vs team experience i've gotten ever, RTS or otherwise
Battle Realms. It'll make you appreciate every basic peasant you ever had.
>LEFT IS WRONG
>RIGHT IS RIGHT
Redpilled, too.
C&Cs + Dune games are ideal as entry point
