Her romance is pretty long and the first half is basically her nurturing you about bhaalspawn stuff, you get really connected with her only after sailing to island and exploring underdark, it's pretty far in game timeline.

Honestly, the reputation system, while it's a nice idea (why would a good character stick with a CE monster), was implemented... poorly. For example, Viconia really should have been exempt from that system, as when she joins, she explicitly says it's to take advantage of the Drizzt effect and not be horribly murdered on sight. Instead, if you make her look heroic, she ragequits. It didn't help that some characters just plain did not line up with their alignment. However, it could be improved. But instead of doing that, Bioware just cut it out entirely.

It was the start of a trend for Bioware where they'll get a great idea, and it'll be awkwardly implemented, but could easily be improved in future works. Instead, they respond to the criticism by just ripping it out entirely.

Tusken Raiders get an /amazing/ loredump in KOTOR that's a pain in the ass to get to? Well shit, not worth the effort and we never get anything like that again. Jade Empire tries to approach Light/Dark from different angles and how both can be used for good or ill, but reverts to the typical black/white standard? Well fuck if people complain just get rid of it. The Mako brings an exceptional level of immersion by getting to outright explore distant worlds, but it controls clunky as fuck? Don't make it smoother, just cut it out entirely. Hawke's overall personality is molded by you picking consistent styles in dialogue options but it comes across as stilted with too many make/break points? Fuck that, get fucking rid of it.

Like most every other trend in Bioware, it can all be traced back to Baldur's Gate.

There are a few that let you play as drow. I think you can in Icewind Dale 2. But the problem is that you have to deal with the stupid Effective Level Adjustment (ELA) in 3rd or 4th edition, whatever it is for those games that let you be drow. I think it's +2 for drow, which means you will be stuck at level one until the rest of your party is level 4. You will always be 2 levels behind them.
I get the drow get racial bonuses but those bonuses are not enough to make up for being 2 levels behind.

You can make custom characters in Pathfinder. There's some don't need no man barbarian girl with a secret and there's a cuck orc that you can join in with, but there are also Tiefling twins which results in a threesome. The way they don't hold your hand ins very interesting and refreshing. I haven't finished the game per se due to how the game overheats this toaster but I was impressed with how some decisions affect some shit later on.

I've come to cut Aerie some slack in more recent years because when you think about it, what happened to her was legitimately awful. In any other game, what happened to her really would be the tragic backstory of the game.

The Problem with with the game is the general problem I have with Pathfinder. Its the very worst of 3.5 Edition.

Its Munchkin-hell that rewards only the most autistically numbercrunching of builds for trying to break the game.

But for people who actually play tabletop for the the game part of things as well as the roleplaying. pathfinder is a superior system.

Pathfinder is a system that rewards min/maxing alot. but you can be perfectly viable even with a sub-optimal build. unless you are doing some dumb shit like taking meta magic feats when you only have like 1 level dip in spellcasting class or something. but i would say thats more on the player.

She's very average at everything. I keep her as an off-tank with shield and scimitar and try to to use her as gatekeeper for the backline. She dies quicker than dedicated tanks, does less damage than dedicated fighters and her spells are mostly pre and post battle.

Whenever you can, yes. You can even run towards doors and have 2 frontliners blocking the path and healers and casters do their job. I usually try to cast area of effect spells from doors to pull aggro from the mobs and wait for them there, but this is difficult later on in the game as most fights take place in the open (having some summons close to the backline as a decoy to rethink your formation is very useful).

I think enemies attack the nearest target indeed.

JRPG fags are upfront that they want wish fulfillment. WRPG fags want a "realistic" romance.

The problem is real relationships are hard as fuck to get right due to, by nature, being incredibly complex and oftentimes not something you can just write down. People don't want arguments because it stresses them out, but arguments are part of all relationships and is unavoidable. There's a lot of trying and poking and experimenting, but people don't have the patience to deal with that in a video game and want to get straight to it.

Korgan is the best pure class fighter companion, leagues above Minsc, Valygar or Sarevok (shorty saving throws + enrage)
Viconia is trickier, perfectly viable on core rules but not viable on insane without girdle of fortitude. Her 65 magic resistance is amazing (can get to 10) though and with the right gear (girdle of fortitude, gauntlets of str, elemental resistances ) she's by far the very best non arcane tank companion in the game.
Jan is amazing, I always take him, mage/thief is one of the very best classes if you know what to do with it (mislead backstabs at 8apr is one of the highest dps in the game), specialist so he has quite a bit of spells lots, can fill any role really. Tank, dps, thief, caster all at once. Haer Dalis is the only fighter/mage type companion, and his spells like remove magic, stoneskin and mirror image scale like crazy with his levels.
Evil/neutral party is not only viable, it's basically optimal tbqh.
She sucks in BG1 but is amazing in BG2. Iron skin, insect plague, greater earth elemental transformation, she's a very solid non arcane tank if you know what to do with her.
Only problem is her low wis and that atrocious level 13-15 druid gap, but she's a really solid companion all around.
