Maxing out my favorite characters is my own goal, I just like to platinum games that I really end up enjoying. After beating all the content there's not much left for me to do other than challenge runs which I'm not interested in.

I had to edit the ini files to make the opening anime move. I alt + f4 because of the boring gameplay, but steam thought the game was still up so couldn't get a refund. Might as well play the game a bit and look at that, it fucking suck asssssss

It eventually grew on me as the base theme, since it's really comfy. I'm still not really a fan of Disgaea's music in general, though. People give Dragon Quest shit for using midis, but at least those sound like they were made on a computer in the last twenty years. Disgaea's music sounds like it was recorded on Little Timmy's Casio keyboard. I'd love to hear what the games sound like when the music is performed with real instruments.

Disgaea is unique enough that, for the most part, it only feels dated compared to later games in its own series. In a vacuum, it holds up quite well. That's especially true of the Steam version, since they fixed some bullshit like unskippable skill animations and overall low battle speed. I still have that fucking Winged Slayer animation burned in my brain from grinding Cave of Ordeals.

I started with Disgaea 2 so I might be biased, but they really got the story progression down with 2 by giving you a cutscene after every battle. Though 1 has the only memorable cast that anyone cares about besides maybe 4 and as far as gameplay goes they are all just 1 with more features.

I'm hype as fuck for it. 4 has my favourite cast, music, etc. and the only thing any of the others tops it with is 5 having better unit building IMO, but even then 4 is almost as good in that regard.

On top of that, Desco is legitimately one of my all time favourite characters so I'm just happy to get a reason to see her again, and see people appreciate her and the game as a whole again.

I'm really damn happy we're getting it and I have the LE preordered.

PS4/Switch, no mention of PC in any of the info for it. But yeah it's a port of the Vita version with "minor tweaks". From what I've seen, one of those tweaks is the addition of autosaves, not sure what else there is.

It was, but it's been patched.

Disgaea is a series that buffs up instead of nerfs. Everything is hilariously broken. Mages require more of an investment than before, but you can still snipe enemies with a 3x3 spell from twenty spaces away if you want. But there's way goofier shit available now, like a class that can protect allies from damage from literally anywhere on the screen, or spells that hit every unit on the map, or Prier's new ability to just take as many turns as she damn well feels like.

The PC version is just a port of the PSP port. I think we missed out on some DLC here in the West originally, but I'm not sure if that would be an issue on the pirated ISO. Admittedly I just played the PS2 version when it came out, so I don't know much about the other releases.

Complete Edition on Switch and PC is just the PS4 version and the season pass, content wise.

In fact the PC version is actually missing content as they removed base customization for that one.

I really liked it when it came out, but it doesn't really hold up in my opinion. Adell and Rozalin are infinitely more likable in DLC appearances than they are in their own game, and D2 had mechanics that were way more grindy and annoying than any other games in the series. Felony farming made me wanna claw my goddamn eyes out. And I'm still mad at what that game did to Etna's characterization.

By the time you hit post-game everyone should have like 30 Move and 99 Jump just from slapping Barefoot Xs on all their equipment slots, so it's a bit of a moot point.

Is there anything wonky I should know about the game before going into 1? I gave it a shot a while ago but wasn't sure when and if I was supposed to be grinding.

Prinnies are worthless. Their only purpose in the early games is being cheap cannon fodder (they only cost 1HL to heal at the hospital) and being a bridge between the humanoid and monster classes when Reincarnating. Whether you focus on one or two super-strong characters or make a whole bunch and use pile-on tactics like this is up to you, but the latter will take a lot more time.

Don't bother with Reincarnating until you hit the post-game. The benefits are miniscule if you only have 30-ish levels saved up, and your options for leveling back up are pretty limited.

Why do you have to remove Evilities from one character to give it to another one? Why in God's name am I riding Gig piggyback instead of using him in his Onyx Blade form? And that's not even getting into what a waste of time the story was. Even D3's was more memorable.

The last new game in the series came out over four years ago. It was already a niche series to begin with, but you can't expect people to be as enthusiastic now as they were when NIS was releasing a new game every year.

Did you not play Infinite then? You should, there's like 14 different endings, and they all somewhat explain how some of the games tie together, or how some of the cameos in some games happened.
It's actually pretty fun, lots of fun interactions, and with you possessing people as a Prinny, you can make them do stupid shit. At one point you have Gordon doing the "Yaranaika?" thing to Mao.

As for Prinny 1, I loved it, but god fucking damn that final boss, 90 minutes of continuous button mashing, my forearms were killing me.
Prinny 2 was lovely, maybe I'm biased because there was heavy focus on Etna's panties, and I actually own a pair of those. But being Able to see Asagi in there a lot was fun too, and being able to play Prinny Asagi.

See, Sir Sweet form 2 is kind of bullshit. But it's the best kind of bullshit. It's a 100% pattern based boss. No RNG. The only "deviance" is the splitting meteors which are based on where you stand.
Junkie Etna was a step down as a final boss, a lot of stages just felt weaker too. Prinny Laharl and Asagi were really fun things to mess with. Asagi's final boss was kinda ehn but a step up from fighting Asagi like 5 times over.
I just need a way to play Infinite since my psp's dead and I don't think emulators for it are that good yet? I might be horribly wrong ont hat.

However Disgaea 2's manga goes deeper into her soft side in 2 and features a better Laharl.

There's good PSP emulators, and Infinite is a visual novel, so it's not like gameplay would hold you down.
And I agree, Sir Sweet form 2 was no RNG, but... so much fucking mashing, and you had to do a LOT of mashing, when I finally killed him I had 3 seconds left on the timer.
Being a massive Etnafag, I absolutely loved the final boss of Prinny 2.

Prinny 2 felt like it was made from the ground up to fuck with you. introducing breakable platforms is a cheap way to kill you, doubly so if you built up your gauge and see your prinny shit out that lightning, only to fall to your death. Enemy placements were more overwhelming and not in a fun way either. 1 was tough but fair while 2 felt like the devs were trying to make it hard for all the wrong reasons.

Yeah I grew pretty sick of trying to do the "5 stage streak on Hell's Finest" award and just bought the max cost Etna special to nuke the boss instead of trying to learn it because doing the stages were just too bullshit.

The gameplay's a bit wonky, but the story's one of NIS' best. You would have gotten more out of one of the characters' story in Soul Nomad if you had played Phantom Brave first, but it might work in reverse.

I'm pretty sure that they say every chapter's the last one after a certain point as a running gag. I don't remember off-hand how many there are, but it's one of the longer story campaigns in the series.

The art captures the characters well and makes them really expressive for the comedic moments. Unfortunately, it's 4 volumes and the last 2 volumes were never translated, officially or by fans.

It is pretty weird that we got one unit that could create sentries in the first game, then nothing of the sort ever again. The only methods of area denial from that point came from Geo Panels, which are always against you, and a rather useless Evility that mimics a tiny Zone of Contact from other SRPGs. Disgaea is like the SRPG equivalent of anime fighting games with no neutral game.

I really hope Dronya and Liar Princess are in Disgaea 6s cameos, alongside Metallia of course.

Those three and Desco are seriously among my favourite characters ever, they're on a fucking roll with these things.

You never know. My first impression of Dronya was that she was a poor man's Metallia, but she surprised me. Labyrinth of Refrain surprised me an awful lot, actually, and I'm sure Galleria could do the same (assuming NIS doesn't go under first).

The same was the case with Hundred Knight 2. The cast, but especially Metallia, was so god damn amazing. HK2s cast wasn't bad IMO, Chelka was a lot of fun, but Metallia's story was a real fuckin' ride.

That said, I'll always love how having played the original, then Revival, the last bit of new dialogue in Hundred Knight Revival was essentially Metallia saying pic related.

Feels good, they really got what made her special.

Are the hundred knight games good? The only NIS games I've played are Labyrinth of Refrain, Disgaea 5, and Disgaea 1 remake which I all really enjoyed.

I must really suck ass at these games and I can't micromanage for shit. I only leveled up Etna, made her OP as fuck and cleared the game with just her.

I'm definitely in the "it felt weird at first but it grew on me" thing. It's a bit in your face at first but it becomes very homely and I loved hearing it build up every time I went back.

I liked them, but it's kinda annoying that they completely hijack the plot of the game for most of the second half. And it's a real shame they never came back, with their absence from DD2 being an even bigger black mark on an already flawed game.

I don't know if you've played Disgaea Infinity, but they're very prominent in that visual novel game

Hundred Knight is a Diablo-like, a top down ARPG with random loot. The gameplay is not its strongest area, honestly. It's servicable but very repetitive. Opens up a little later as you unlock Tochka (spells, basically) though. That said I did enjoy some of the boss fights a fair bit.

The real strength of the game comes from its characters, story and music. It's a more fairy tale inspired setting, and a bit darker in tone than the likes of Disgaea, so Labyrinth of Refrain is a fairly good comparison in tone. You play as the Hundred Knight, the familiar of an extremely sadistic and selfish witch named Metallia, and are tasked with spreading her swamp around the world. Shit gets pretty wild.

I think if you really liked the story in LoR and the Disgaea games then it's definitely worth checking. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for its gameplay, but I don't think it's AWFUL in that regard either.

For the record, avoid the PS3 version as it the western release of it has a crashing issue. The PS4 version of the game doesn't, and also adds weapon line switching which makes the gameplay a bit less tedious and Tower of Illusion, an additional side story and essentially the games Item World equivalent.

As for 2, personally I think it's cool, but ultimately a downgrade. The cast isn't as strong and while the combat is improved, the overworld gets a HUGE downgrade (the original had hand crafted individual levels that were fun to explore, while 2 drops the level format in favour of a connected maze-like overworld but its extremely heavy reuse of environment assets makes it very boring to travel through).

I only played the PS2 version of Disgaea 2, so no Extra Missions for me. I did play Raspberyl Mode, but I don't remember them showing up in that (or much of it all as a matter of fact, other than hinting Flonne had become an Archangel by that point). It wasn't just a Prinny Kurtis cameo, was it?

Did Disgaea 4 even have weapon proficiencies? I remember characters would learn weapon skills from the Evility Shop and have access to specific ones based on class, but you could transfer them over via the Chara World. Or am I remembering wrong?

Raspberyl's mode had 3 chapters. The third was her going to celestia to get an angel's advice on how to motivate Mao, which she passes Fallen Angel Flonne going to see Lamington. This is important for two reasons. One, in that chapter you see what truly happened to Vulcanus; like Flonne being turned into a flower in one of D1's endings, he was reincarnated into an Alarune. The second, is that this is her trip IN DD2 to get the ability to become Pure Flonne.
But, the second chapter was literally the Trio of Space Nuts getting lost in Mao's netherworld and Raspberyl having to save them, repeatedly.

No, that's right. But it's irksome that she HAD it in 3R/V and it was locked behind postgame, effectively, to do the method to force it back into her.

Damn, I don't remember ANY of that. I'm realizing that I have some kind of weird mental block when it comes to Disgaea 3. Almost everything I remember about it, I realize was actually from Disgaea 4. Except for those fucking Orcs with the Cheech Marin accent. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in D4.

I'm just glad we get D4 Desco back. D5 Desco wasn't nearly as fun. No Escape was a cool idea and Final Boss Glare definitely fits her, but come on, removing Three Transformations is practically a sin.

Final Boss Setting + Three Transformations is what makes her one of my favourite units mechanically in any TRPG.

Those orcs were 3. Those were the biggest goons of the first-year class.
But all 3 of the EDF were monster-type units in D3, without a lot of explanation other than that they may be copies and not the originals. Gordon changed into a beam sword like a goofy ass scifi sword and Jennifer just became a giant mecha fist. Thursday was just a Megabuster.

Three Transformations would have fit her much better in the games after D4 too, since the damage formula in D4 made it such a one-hit-KO fest that any effect triggering via loss of HP was effectively worthless in the post-game. I did hear that the Vita version uses the damage calculations from DD2 though, so Tank Desco could be more effective.

It appears to just be the Vita version of the game (which was better) and maybe a couple bells and whistles.

I think a lot of people skipped the Vita version, since the system was already dead by the time it finally came out, so the new content will be nice to see. Plus, as someone pointed out earlier in the thread, it's the hardest one to get a hold of if you don't have a PS3, so newcomers to the series that got into it with D5 on the Switch and D1C will have a chance to play it. As someone who already played in on PS3, I probably won't touch it since this fall is really crowded with games I'd rather play. But it's nice that it's there for the crowd that wants it.

You got to make use of her elemental boosting evilities to get the most out of her. Get her resistances to 99 and she becomes a beast with elemental spells. Her sword play isn't as good because of this usually but 5 did give her elemental sword skills to play with. While they aren't as good as her Tera spells they are perfectly usable and give her a reason to use swords for once.

I never did get why they cut books in 5. It was a really good weapon for all magic based characters and gave them an option between range or new attacks and power.

Disgaea really needs a few more weapon types at this point. Books should have been better balanced, not cut. Maybe on top of learning weapon skills, Books could be the only one that increases the power of spells, whereas Staves get the range boost and reduce SP cost or something. I was thinking that they could finally introduce a Magic Sword class of weapons too, which function the same as regular swords but run off the INT stat and can parry enemy spells like Celes' Runic skill from Final Fantasy 6. And Whips, which could attack up to three squares away but don't pierce like Spears and have a sweet spot on the tip of their range that does more damage and has a higher crit rate, would be nice. You wouldn't have to go into full Makai Kingdom-esque bullshit to give the party more variety than 50 chicks with guns and a dozen spellcaster that all play exactly the same.

Even before you hit post-game, Staves out-classed Books so much that there was no point in using them. Their Weapon Skills weren't all that great on their own, and certainly didn't make up for the boosts that regular spells got from Staves. But a lot of this was already fixed by how you boosted skills in the Evility Shop in 5, so just porting Books over as-is would have already helped balance them. Cutting them was completely unnecessary when it wouldn't have been very difficult to just buff them.

I feel like Books were a nice way to finally round out a set of 10 characters.

Took some doing to set it up, but giving her the Valkyrie Evility along with an Evility that made enemies aggro to her more often turned her into a one man army. Enemies would dogpile on her while she evaded and countered them like Jackie Chan, and my spellcasters would kill anyone left over the next turn.

It's up to you, but that damage really piles on. But it's really only a reliable source of damage if you have someone with Sicily's Evility that boosts all allies' combo rate to 100%.

I whole-heartedly agree with you on the plot, but to be honest I haven't liked a Disgaea story since D2, so that's a moot point as far as I'm concerned. As for stage gimmicks, I found D5 to be WAAAY less intrusive with that shit than the stages in D3 and D4. At least I never had to carry a box around for 50 turns while getting sniped by mages standing on stacks of Invincible cubes.

He wasn't hot-blooded enough. In a series of over-the-top parodies, Adell ended up feeling pretty lukewarm in comparison. But I ended up really liking him in his cameo appearances.

The only netherworld effect I hated was the one that spawned new enemies every turn and that is mostly because it made soloing the maps that had it a total pain. Outside of that one I found them to be fun to play around.

1 & 2 are the only good entries in the series, everything else can be ignored

Even then, all you needed was one bonus gauge to remove it. Except for the airship stages with all the teleporters, D5's maps were among the most straightforward in the series.

Well the difference there is that a gimmick in a situation like that exists for 1 map, and you're through. It's often a small puzzle for how you have to curve the normal strategy. The tournament in Disgaea 2 is the perfect example.
But in the Netherworld-wide gimmicks are just one flavor of bullshit that you just are forced to take about a half-dozen times across a chapter, and always to your deficit semi-exclusively.

>Here's a netherworld where a particular elemental resistance is weakened, so enemies will always have it to their affinity and have skills with it.

Status effects can be useful for doing things earlier than you're meant to, but after that they get pretty worthless.

I remember when Thieves' whole gimmick was inflicting status effects with higher probability than mages, so you could stack enemies on top of one another, afflict them with Poison, and then run like a bitch until their HP was low enough to chip to death. The Shamen took over that role, but not the effectiveness, which is a shame.

Disgaea 3 & 4's remakes had them as amazing units because of Curse Storm. Then they nerfed that skill to shit.

Well i've done this, and even when i'm going mostly casual i still try to keep everyone at same strength and only use 2 or 3 story characters, only time i used DLC was in 5 to get Adel and Rozalinn 'cause i love D2 way too much

I'm almost the opposite.
I try to keep myself to the core of the plot cast and fill in generics for the weapon gaps, and try to build up their own narratives via reincarnation paths.
I'm sick of having to curve the entire way I build people based on overlapping weapon proficiency.

This is why my team of 7 slimes and 3 humans was so ridiculously efficient, each one had resistances I had built myself through item world to survive the elements individually. They have incredible range if you throw them on eachother. Axe, fist, sword and spear gets stopped in its wake. Character team struts in and cleans things up

What are you diving into? If you just unlocked it and your level is low you really should start with a item that says enemies are at level 1, because even then at each floor the enemies level will increase so by the time you reach the general on floor 10 the enemies will be at... I dunno something higher than 1
Playing Item World can be very different from the main game since you don't have stops between maps so make sure you have a healer and backup healing itens to keep your dudes maintained

Don't worry about it too much in the main story, if you get or buy a nice item you're going to be using for a while try to put 10 levels into it for a pretty good boost. If you ever feel like you need to grind just do some Item World runs if you don't feel like replaying one of the story maps that are set up for grinding. You'll get experience and be improving your equipment.
Leveling up an item increases every stat that it improves, so the more stats an item has the more you get out of improving it. Emblem items (like the Imperial Seal that Laharl starts with) give you massive value, for example.
You also absolutely want to have a Thief (or Rogue, I think they're called). Thieves suck ass as fighters, since their aptitudes and weapons masteries are all pretty bad. But they're the only unit that can effectively Steal from enemies (all other units have their success rate capped at 50%) and the Item World is the best source of good items at all stages of the game. Every enemy randomly generates with random equipment roughly the same tier as the item you entered, so you can look through the inventories of the enemies on each floor and be pretty likely to find some useful Legendary-rarity equipment (50% better stats than its normal variant, 25% for Rare) or some other item types that can be hard to find early on like Boots, Belts and Goggles.
Thieves are also the only generic unit that has a Throw range of 6, which is also very useful in the Item World where the random terrain can screw you over (especially in D1). Thieves are built to be best with Guns (since they don't have a penalty to HIT) but in the long run it's better for them to use Swords, because Sword skills are the best in the game and only Sword, Fist and Magic can attack in a 3x3 square optimal for postgame grinding.
Scouts are also valuable in the Item World, because they can reroll Geo Effects for the whole map.
Bring healing and always have a Gency Exit.
