I always thought it was stupid how people acted like an axe would make a character fundamentally different from a sword. There's nothing about the shape of the weapon to make it any different from Ike, the dude even does Hector's Armads crit as his up aerial.

As someone who has only played nu-FE I would want someone from 3H like Dimitri or Lysithea, but not getting associated with Smash is a boon in its own right.

I personally take no issue with the FE cast.
I wouldn't mind if one or two were dropped for a more unique FE character (not Roy though because hes my main along with Ness).
That said, I can see why people are annoyed by so many of them since they all do tend to be somewhat similar at least.
I wouldn't mind losing Lucina or Chrom for a different FE character though. Preferably with a different weapon type.

The Fire Emblem bloat is really just because of luck and happenstance.

Marth, Ike, Robin and Corrin are fully unique characters, while Roy was initially added as a clone of Marth, and Lucina and Chrom are both glorified alt costumes that didn't take any development time outside of just getting rid of the sweetspots on their attacks (and Chrom having Ike's Up B).

Four unique characters, all of which are the protagonists of their respective games, and some clones isn't that bad for a long running series with over 14 games that's recently broken out in popularity. It's like how Star Fox only really has the noticable amount of characters it has because Falco and Wolf were built off Fox's base.

Edelgard mechanically has the least to stand out of any of the main Thee Houses choices. Byleth has the whip-sword, Dimitri's polearm makes for something that's got different range and attack arcs than a sword/axe along with cutscenes where he's throwing it and fighting unarmed, and Claude as a more pure bow-fighter would be different from the "bow on neutral B and only neutral B" archery of Link/Pit, with optional wyvern mount if you really want to make things weird.

The only real way to celebrate the character diversity of FE is to go off the rails and start adding characters outside the main cast, but Sakurai would never do that. He cares more about representing different games than he does representing different playstyles.

It's pretty much impossible to separate because he was one of 2 FE characters in Brawl, and at the time one of the most recent FE characters to boot.

having fun is difficult; (s)he has an amazing gameplay and fun tools but is overall fucked by Sakurai's random decision to turn him into the "representation character". Slow, limited ammo, never got buffed, final smash still brings up an already-playable character to help..

I dumped too much time into this series, and Ultimate is the first where I'm seemingly fighting the controls as much as the player. I imagine I need a new controller but there was a LOT of noise about turning accidentally, air dodging when you didn't want, turning accidentally, etc.

yeh no; even with a brand new controller and a perfect wifi - the game randomly eats your inputs arbitrarily. Air-dodge-to-death is the biggest example but there's also the Tilt attacks with the C-stick that don't repeat when re-used; leaving your character completely immobile, waiting to get their face cleaved.

Pig Ganon was my fourth choice for zelda, I don't typically include him in my lists though because I feel greedy. My only worry is that being both a zoner, a heavy and a swordie, he embodies the wi-fi metagolem in its entirety and would have to be shit forever so shitters don't complain about losing to him. I do think that having the large hitbox he would have with trident attacks would be a step towards having a viable heavy character Sakurai willing. The whole archetype is kind of hard to work in platform fighters since they're based highly around mobility.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but i think Ike as a whole should be replaced by an Axe user (i'd say Hector ; though i don't know the character much, he's at least the MC in his game from what i understand).

Awakening saved FE's ass, so Robin deserves to stay; but Chrom should just be an Alternate skin to Roy (if he even stays). And i know Corrin (like Robin) has an original fighting style but... from my POV, Corrin suffers from the same thing as Ike - they both nearly killed their series and don't really deserve to be there.

Black Knight was one of the main villians in two games with the most popular character in the series, and Anna has been in nearly every game and is the series' unofficial mascot. Try harder, not that I want either anyways
