The most well known applications worked just fine, but there's tons of obscure, special software that stopped working once we made the transition. Try Mint with cinnamon, it works extremely similar to w7. Or try xfce on Ubuntu/Mint. That's what I'm using and with just a small bit of configuration I've made it work just like windows 7, however xfce doesn't have transparency for the window titlebars or clickable links to certain folders in the start menu, so if you want those stick to cinnamon.

I haven't used it too extensively, but if I remember correctly, the default plugin for the task bar was kinda shit so I switched to another. I don't remember anything about that specific feature. I'd say try it in a vm and try to config it in a way you like. The nice thing about it is that you can do it all in GUIs without having to go to external sites or anything.

Telemetry I can manually disable through removal of certain updates and certain , I'm already aware of W10's telemetry getting backported to W7 and the like. Strictly speaking I can't disable a lot of hardware-level telemetry because of modern parts having it built in but I'd rather my parts than fucking Microsoft constantly pinging me to collect nothing of value.

I don't use Nvidia, I use AMD because it's "good enough", I usually only want to hit 60FPS in vidya and I don't have any need for workstation levels of power.

Windows games on linux has become incredibly good, and will only get better as more games have vulkan. What I'm doing now, because I have to use it for my job, is running windows in a xen instance (virtual machine with complete memory/resource passthrough). Which is a pain to set up and I don't recommend it for people new to Linux. It's best to just dual-boot.

Keep vidya data on separate volumes as read-only, or have them be snapshotted regular or both. If there is ever an infection, just reload the VM from a vanilla state, done.

With GPU passthrough, it's like a 2-3% performance loss which is fucking nothing. It's awesome, and you'll never have to worry about migration ever again.

I'm like 70-80% of my way into taking the linuxpill.
The only problem is that i'm a complete brainlet when it comes to fiddling with drivers or using Wine/playonlinux/proton, most of my steam library refuses to boot on linux and when I had to reinstall my distro the few that did work stopped working and a completely different set of games started working instead.

I'll probably still end up switching to Linux after 7 support ends regardless since every distro under the sun comes with the essentials like a word processor, web browser, email client etc.
If I still haven't figured out how to run my PC games by then I guess I'll just have to play console games for the rest of my life, the PS2 library alone will last me a decade, maybe more.

...and? That would have been a concern like 5+ years ago, but hypervisors making use of CPU IOMMU virtualization hardware long since became mature. You just give the VM the actual graphics card and the performance is indistinguishable from metal outside of a 2-3% you can see in specific benchmarks. Since my Mac VM is my main work/general one, that is one I give a bunch of actual hardware too as well as a solid 64gb, but I'm not sorry I built this way otherwise since it gave way more freedom in hardware selection for everything else.

Chances are good Microsoft will release critical security updates like they still do for XP.

I like Video Production want to re-learn some of the Apple software (FCPX and such). I also really like the little things about the macOS UI like pressing spacebar to instantly see a picture preview and using cmd left/right to instantly and seamlessly move across desktop workspaces. Everything has a smooth consistent look and feel. Some of the software it comes with is quite decent (though most of it like Photo Booth are shit and need to go). Updates aren't intrusive, either.

If I run a Windows VM via Parallels, I get all the benefits of that OS contained in a sandbox where it belongs. If it wants to shit the bed during a simple audio driver update, it can do so. If it wants to change my settings and opt me into things without asking me for permission, it can do so. If it wants to change the location of things and add an additional layer of aesthetics (Fluent Design) that clash with everything already there, hey it can do that too. I wouldn't have to see much of it because I'd be running Hybrid mode in Parallels.

Linux Mint's default desktop environment is pretty easy-mode. I don't think the average Windows 7 user would have any trouble with it.
