Why does he hold the barrel? Is it a last stand of defiance against the crushing darkness? He's alone, no one around, no enemies, no friends. For what reason then did he pick up the barrel? And now we see him standing there. What is going through his mind? Fear? Loneliness? Anger? Who can say but he.
What is his next move? We see him frozen in place. Will he throw the barrel? Will he just stay there in that pose, the barrel raised over his head, his muscles rippled and ready to launch the barrel with all his might.
What a fascinating image, and it's amazing what something like this can say.

If he ate something besides bananas he might have had night vision.

Maybe the real barrel is the friends we made along the way...

Donkey Kong looked at his banana hoard in glee, but his eyes never left the ground. They only moved up from there, just above the ground, and the jungle monster started to laugh loudly, like he had been enjoying it all night and would probably die of giggles again soon, because he knew that was exactly the situation the players had set in motion for him in case the game went the complete opposite way. It was just about time.

I guess that's how a monkey always finds a way to win.
