>Thoughts on the Steam controller?
It's great. I barely use anything else anymore.
>how would you improve it?
Better bumpers, less loud and heavy clicks, USB-C, make the batteries rechargeable in the controller. Make the LED RGB just for vanity.
>Should the Steam controller become the standard?
I don't think so, the touchpads are just too different for most people. Certain aspects of it should though: dual-stage triggers, rear paddles and gyro.
I like it, the gyro is much better than the stick for racing games, and sometimes I use it to play Thief with gyro+touchpad aiming.
>Also, if you were able to change it, how would you improve it?
My main gripe is that it requires steam to function, and controller configuration in steam was buggy the last time I tried. On Linux you can get around this with SC Controller, but I'm not sure how far the Windows port is yet.
Also being able to recharge batteries with the controller would be great.
I think controllers would benefit from having a touchpad in general, not two touchpads, just one on the right, the left touchpad could be easily replaced with a normal and smaller dpad. It could be used for obvious stuff such as aiming but I think it would be great for 3d platformers too.
For example, the two shoulder buttons would rotate the camera left and right traditionally, the touchpad would control the camera in all directions, while camera centering would be set to the L3 button [clicking the analog stick], it could work.
Yeah, controller configuration is pretty buggy, it likes to freeze and crash a lot, if you dare alt-tab while configuring your controller, it'll probably freeze, forcing you to restart Steam.
>Thoughts on the Steam controller?
I like it but it needs some changes.
>Also, if you were able to change it, how would you improve it?
-Make it smaller
- Remove the crossgate mold from the left touchpad
- add normal rumble, the hd rumble is a mega meme no one uses
- better shoulder buttons
I actually really like the left pad. The no-click option is amazing for some games, and it's just another customizable option as far as the touch component goes. It could be smaller though, and take less force to depress.
The only good things about steam controller are gyro and configuration softwares.
Switch Pro also has gyro and works with Steam software rendering Steam Controller obsolete.
Yea but gyro always on is gay.
Fair enough.
Wish there was more paddles on the back of it, other than that it's pretty solid for what I'm using it for.
>add normal rumble, the hd rumble is a mega meme no one uses
Have you actually used the thing? The touchpads are utter shit without the haptic feedback.
The right touch pad is a lot harder to use in a clinch than a regular stick. I get that the touchpads are kind of the point of the controller but I'd like to see a regular controller version as well.
And definitely better and more durable shoulder buttons. My RB broke after only a couple of months of use.
Can you use a Wii remote as gyroscopic mouse control in an fps? I want to aim like Ocarina of time and Majora's mask for the 3ds but on PC.
Can you even pair a wii remote with a PC? Either way you'd need a wiimote+ as that's the only one with a gyro iirc and software to map it to a mouse.
Why not just use a switch pro, DS4 or steam controller?
Make it heavier. It feels cheap.
Quieter paddle clicks
Concave analogue stick
Smaller left touchpad
It was an amazing controller for Doom/FPSes. Being able to jump with the paddle, leaving a thumb free to aim in midair was a game changer. And of course the gyro aiming.
>DS4
This might be more convenient if it has the capability to control a pointer quickly and accurately by tilting.
It does. Just bind the gyro to the mouse via DS4Windows or Steam.
add D-pad on the left side and add a thumbstick on the right
I would improve it so it would be supported on Android because I bought one for my Nvidia shield and it only half works (only trackback and triggers function as intended) REEEEEEEEEEEEE
Besides that it's pretty great desu
I like the idea but I'm really unsure on where and how it would fit, I assume it would use interchangeable faceplates.
Wait, not even the face buttons?
I forgot to add, remove those stupid trackpads
Nope, not for me anyway. Add to that the Bluetooth doesn't function, latest firmware reconnects the controller every 5 seconds when connected through usb and it's not even fully supported by the steam link app on the shield... Valve really made this thing with either pcs or the link in mind so I can't really blame them.
It's alright for my use of browsing a laptop hooked to a TV, selecting a movie and playing it. Couldn't find a comfortable configuration for vidya. I tried playing Fury with it and it just didn't work right with its one analog stick.
I'd make it smaller. I have adult male hands, I was never told they were small by anyone, and yet times when I played with the controller left me with pain in my palms. I can't attribute the pain to anything other than the size. I bought a PS4 controller since, and it feels more wieldy.
I would also give it a degree of internal memory that remembers a layout or more without the need of having Steam launched. Having to have Steam open for it to function properly is a huge disadvantage. The amount of times my family had to wait for Steam to fucking launch on my laptop so we could watch a bloody movie is absurd, especially with Steam taking so damn long to launch.

Fuck in the controller batteries. They just die and then you have a useless piece of plastic.
user, you can have batteries rechargeable AND removable batteries at the same time. But to be fair, it's only a minor annoyance. Just have two sets of batteries and a separate recharging device. When the batteries die you just swap them
That's exactly what my second link is. It's a storage closet for batteries that doubles as a recharger.
No no, the controller itself should be able to charge the replaceable batteries so you don't need a separate charging station or to swap the batteries all the time. This way you get the benefits of a built-in battery as well as replaceable ones.
I hate the convex joystick.
I use it for everything but fighting games. Gyro + trackpad is the best aiming solution on a controller right now, and with practice you can hold your own against keyboard and mouse users.
Trackpads are more versatile than analog sticks. A trackpad can be used for mouse look, custom menus, a mouse wheel, you can have 5 different inputs for clicks where an analog stick can only have one, and it can switch between all this stuff on the fly.
I like how people have slowly turned around on this thing.
For consoles, I agree with you, but I think the Steam controller should stay the way it is, because being able to turn the left pad into a kind of touch screen for extra buttons is essential for games designed without console controller limitations in mind.
People really sleep on the left trackpad even turning it into a simple virtual keypad can make a big difference.
How the fuck you people manage to play FPS? I only use it for JRPGs and side-scrollers.
On topic: make the battery cover with the adapter holder standard.
>How the fuck you people manage to play FPS?
I suppose the biggest issue with this is setting up aiming, here's how I have it:
Gyro enable on right pad touch
Gyro set up so turning the controller 45 degrees is about 180 degrees in game
Right pad set to trackball mode with a full swipe from left to right being about 180 degrees of rotation in game, this is somewhat low, might raise that at some point.
Right pad set up so it only controls the horizontal axis
Everything else should be relatively obvious. Many people seem to swear by putting movement on the left pad but I still use the stick.
