If Fortnite even dips the free ride is over, or if Epic overtakes steam they will have zero reason to buy exclusives you don't need to strongarm developers when your platform is the incentive. Valve worked to make steam good. GoG works to provide what their user base wants out of them while keeping their doors open which is hard currently. Epic doesn't work to make their service actually good, they want to bring a player base over begrudgingly because that game they like is only available here now.
The only thing Epic worked for was their engine and Fortnite, with the latter being the real money cow. If that game falls they are fucked. Valve at this point is sustainable off their own store's ecosystem and doesn't need something else to be a generator for their storefront

The issue is that when Steam was young it was good because Valve gave a fuck and so when it went to shit, it already had a solid infrastructure and business plan that could run indefinitely.
Epic basically plopped the store out amidst the craze of Fortnite meaning a lot of potential users on a store without putting much but the basics into it (And even then sometimes not even doing that) but are trying to use their money to skip improving the store by offering free games and exclusives. Everyone has a better store archetecture than EGS and instead of fixing anything they just throw money until people have to use it to be on the ground floor of some games.
