Tanking in classic has same issue as tanking on retail--it's boring most of the time and leveling/doing-world-stuff with it is slow. This is also classic so there's really only the one definite best tank.

Serpent sting or any bleeding skill is perfect for the fucker to not get away if he decides to flee.

I was talking about warrior, prot is only good for a few tiers, and if you're leveling you can get those later. Being able to do things like build rage off of charges and change stances is better for leveling instances than a small percentage of damage mitigation. And it won't make you want to kill yourself when you're out doing quests.

Warlock have better utility, make sense in raids, and scale better later on. You use the exact same gear except warlock have more options.

Druid is a very good 5 man tank, and a good off-tank. They excel at soaking raw damage thanks to their high armor, but their lack of +defense on gear means their susceptible to crushing blows and thus aren't well suited for tanking raid bosses.

Feral druids and prot pallies lack both the threat and active mitigation options warriors have. They can do dungeons and offtank adds in raids but they'll never be main tanks for raid bosses. DKs aren't in classic, they were added with WotLK.

I tanked AQ40 for the heck of it because they let me. You can get second best gear before doing raids. It's viable, has better threat generation in my experience. Can't gain immunity to crushing, but that never killed me. Maybe you can't do Naxx without it, I don't know. Overall it was enjoyable and AoE spamming faggots loved me because I could keep threat on a bunch of targets with swipe spam.

Yes, you will need to heal for the last part of the quest. If you are playing Priest and do not want to heal then you should switch to Warlock. You will be just as effective in PvP and will have the added bonus of being very desirable for raids. You also get a sick mount.

100% necessary. You cannot successfully play Classic without socializing. If you try to play it as a singleplayer game you will fail. If you do not have friends playing or don't want to play with your friends for whatever reason, you will need to socialize and form groups with other players when needed. While leveling up, you should be trying to network with as many players as possible so that you can help eachother with quests, dungeons, crafting, etc,... This is also why it's important to join a guild, since guilds pretty much do the hard part of networking with other players for you.

Soulstone can turn shit around, assuming you've not given it to a healer or some shit.

Mists had pretty fun tanking. The better you were at mitigating damage the more you could pull leading to more aoe being done and a higher dps. Rotational wise, I think mists may have been peak wow raiding in terms of fun with rotations and specs. Granted.. to maximize your dps it was all about snapshotting with your trinkets proc'd.

Numbers inflation is fine, it's Blizz fucking around with scaling and different difficulties so much that screws things over. They always need to tune everything to go exactly according to how they want a fight to happen, so it feels like you're following a script rather than being in a fight where what you do has relevance.

Druid tanks will suck a fat dick until they get the right level of minimal gear as they dont have fat defensives. They are a good off-tank though as people said, since it provides leader of the pack buff and you dont have to bring a feral dps then.

No, not really. Nothing too complicated mechanically, but if a guild trusts you to be one of their tanks, you need to reward them with loyalty and raid attendance

people find tanking boring and leveling is slow unless you have a group. Tanking in classic isn't hard, people who play MMOs in general just dislike tanking overall

Tanking is just applying sunder armor to every target you can for the most part. Unlike retail there isn't much of an aspect of active mitigation at play beyond the big cooldowns, but also a lot of mobs hit harder than you'd think.

So it's kind of gear dependent, healer dependent, while also being boring.

Honestly I expect most raids to be shitshows with rolling debuffs. I think there's a priority system in place so stuff like sunder stays up anyhow.

God people are hopeless. When leveling as warrior everyone goes arms. No exception. Then they just make sure they get a decent sword and board and switch to it when a dungeon comes along. As long as the weapons not super underleveled the warrior will do fine without being prot.

Your guild would of cleared BWL by the same you hit 60. Leveling as prot is horrible and completely unnecessary when a arms/fury warrior can tank 5 mans easily and hold better threat allowing your group to go ham more.

Originally I was going to level a rogue, but now I have decided after MUCH rumination I have decided that spamming dungeons as a tank is the faster and probably safer option early on as they are constantly in demand, I like tanking, it's fun (if the group listens - I doubt they will though somehow, headaches galore the first months), and I want the server to know I can tank reliably and well and that I know the dungeons inside and out and what to pull and where to tank it.

So yeah it's going to be a protection warrior, levelling as prot, did it in 1.12 when it was live, and did it again a couple years ago on Elyisum / Light's Hope, with great results. Actually ended up walking into a raid position on the pservers because of it.

The damage is crap and playing solo you will die, it's pretty much a requirement for you to spam dungeons to make levelling prot worth it. And trust me it's so worth it at least IMO.

It's because retards don't understand that at early levels, any potential tank can tank and any potential healer can heal. Paladin argument I can understand because you need int gear, but no Warrior should have any excuse unless they don't have any form of 1 handed weapon and sheild. (which even then doesn't matter in most cases as tanking early shit without a shield is fine).

If you level as prot you are actually a straight up fucking retard. Prot is an objectively worse tank spec than Arms until you enter raid content. At lower levels Arms has superior threat due first to Improved Heroic Strike and Sweeping Strikes, and later Mortal Strike. It also superior Avoidance do to the Parry talent, which makes it less susceptible to crushing blows against dungeon bosses, which you can't access as Prot until you're almost level 60.
Arms also has Anger Management and Tactical Mastery which means you have better rage gen (ie more threat) and you can actually Stance Dance to use Mocking Blow.

Prot is not a good spec for tanking dungeons. Prot is purely a raid spec, and if you level as prot you're a nonce.

If you're rage starved you're either pulling one mob at a time or have a priest using PWS on you, either way that's a shitter problem not a tanking problem. Git gud.

I'm thinking of a lock but early classic predates those shard management buffs. Are shards as big a pain in the ass as they sound? I remember getting full bags just roaming around questing even when I didn't have to deal with shard.

Arm/Fury would still be better. The extra damage and treat means your clearing dungeons quicker and your better gear from exclusively doing dungeons will mean you don't need those prot talents for survival. You can't argue it my dude, the data shows that arm/fury is better in everyday if you're not struggling to survive, which you won't because they're low level dungeons designed to be completed in full greens.

Druids are fine, better DPS for more damage taken. They just don't work as well for Horde do to no Fear Ward.
