I won't nitpick the rest of the list since it's decent (and some omissions are probably games you just haven't played) but I can't agree with that.

DaS3 is so different from DaS2. The feeling of combat and movement, graphics, and animations are so much better in DaS3. But the one thing DaS2 (Sotfs) has going for it is content. Comparing both games with all DLC, DaS2 is like twice as long as DaS3, on top of that there is way more build variety and goofy gimmick shit you can do. DaS3 is quality over quantity and DaS2 is sort of the opposite.

Blood has the best mechanics and arsenal of any build engine game, sure, but lets not even pretend that it has anything close in quality to the level design of Duke Nukem Episode 1.

It has The Overlooked Hotel, it's probably the only level in that game that can compete against the true classic duke ones in terms of level design.

DaS3 is a kid-gloves, nostalgia bait cashgrab. A completely souless where the only thing remarcable are a handfull of bosses, where most os the gameplay styles are absolutely fucking trash and the visual palette is monochromatic. Weapons are absolute boring garbage and magic is neglectable. And much worse fashion souls.

Duke Nukem fucking sucks with everything. Level design is so fucking lifeless you'd think it was a mod for Duke Nukem rather than the final product. Blood has some of the most character of any of the Build games and Shadow Warrior has more gameplay than Duke ever could want.

Saying that Duke Nukem is good compared to the other Build Engine games that came after it is denial that the 'classic' is just a pebble in the sea of actual classics.

how is the level design lifeless in Episode 1 of Duke? Duke was one of the first games that brought high concept level design to gaming, it is fucking legendary for it, it is quite literally remembered for the opposite reasons that you state.

But what's even better about Episode 1 than anything else that came after in that game, or any other build engine game, is that Episode 1 tells a story through its gameplay, the levels are not only engaging for their great level and art design, but also on a conceptual level, the levels themselves tell a story. Episode 1 of Duke actually takes you through something more than just level to level. The most engaged I've ever been playing a build game are those first 5 levels in E1.

For as much as I love Blood and IR, they have nothing that comes close to that. And Shadow Warrior is a joke.

Ascension was god tier. Map was large and fun to play in normally but even doing the easter eggs was the perfect difficulty to still make it fun

I personally just rate Five high because of the kino that is playing those political leaders and how blood pumping some of those later rounds can be when you're in the board room trying to not get wiped
