Ps2

How many ps2s would’ve sold if they didn’t play movies?

Less than an Xbox probably, but still a lot.

Who knows

32,590,802

>less than xbox
that sound a bit too far

original xbox also needed a separate addon to play dvd, so I don't think it'd have been all that popular

Key word is piracy

Probably still around the 100 million mark, that's roughly how many PS1s were sold.

>Less than an Xbox probably
u wot m8

I don't understand the point you're trying to make. OG Xbox played movies too.

The same
no one in my family used the ps2 for dvds. we had a regular dvd player

Same. I’m sure the numbers would be less by maybe a few million, but the PS2 was literally the best selling console ever. You don’t go from mediocre to best selling ever by having a DVD reader.

Everyone I knew got a ps2 for dvds.

No one in family even used DVDs till like 2005+ or so, simply stuck with VHS. Especially since always was recording stuff anyway and PS2 isn't a dvd writer (later did start to record dvds with a proper device though).

I did end up converting one dvd using the PS2 to VHS for them once though.

..as for me, I was already pirating everything I watch even in the 90s, so fuck DVDs

no it didn't wtf
pretty sure all of the games for it are on DVDs

by play DVD I was talking about dvd movies, not games

it needed a dumb remote to be able to play movies and couldn't without

i only ever tried a DVD movie after i softmodded mine, I never knew that

100 to 120 million

yeah, softmodding it does get around it -- not that the average folks generating sales would do that

There was massive hype/demand for the PS2 before anyone knew what a DVD was. The PS1 dominated so hard the previous gen and had so many iconic exclusives that every console gamer was excited for the next sony console.

It would of took a big blunder to torpedo the success of the PS2.

by the time I got my first DVD, I was like "wait, can the PS2 I already have play it?"

xbox was practically non-existant in europe, only americans bought it

Still more. Cope.

>Sega's mid/late-90's fuckery still would have condemned the Dreamcast to an early grave
>Nintendo still would have suffered from a lack of third party support, unorthodox storage media and a reputation as the "kiddie" vidya company
>Microsoft would still have been the new kid on the block, maybe its status as the only console with DVD movie support would have improved sales by about a million
In short, nothing changes.

This

>tfw PS2 and PS3 were your first dvd and blu-ray players but to this day you still don't have a single dvd or blu-ray to play

How many times do you need to be proven wrong? Cheap DVD players were a thing before the PS2 even came out. Everyone and their grandmother was making them.

>cheap
u wot mate

>The first DVD-Audio players were released in Japan by Pioneer in late 1999, but they did not play copy-protected discs. Matsushita (under the Panasonic and Technics labels) first released full-fledged players in July 2000 for $700 to $1,200.
And PS2 came out October 2000 for $300.

Not that I think it played that big of a part still because people weren't really using DVDs much yet, players did get cheapers and caused it to pick up but not before PS2 holy shit.

Zoomer detected. DVD players were fucking expensive at the time and most people were still using VHS. It wasn't until the ps2 where DVD consumption exploded into the mainstream.

Woah that was really hard

geek.com/news/99-dvd-players-dont-exist-542902/

It still sold more than the other consoles combined even when it was no longer the cheapest DVD player of the market.
You can cut 2000-2003 from the PS2 and it will still beat the GC or Xbox.
Muh DVDs is just a coping mechanism.

Ps2 release date: March 4, 2000

Article date: 11.15.2000 :: 2:50PM EDT
"only six percent of us households now own a dvd player, but the next couple of months are expected to push low-cost $99 dvd players into the mainstream."

Not only is your article 9 months after the PS2 came out, they're not even $99 at the time of your article.

i never really got where this meme came from
literally every house i went to with a PS2 atleast had some games even if it was extreme normie like Fifa or GTA

They dont have to be $99 retard just less than $300. Also i love how you pretend we all imported Japanese PS2's from March 2001 and didn't buy our own versions in either October or November 2000 you disengenious fuck. Take your L.

You've also got to factor in the Wife/GF acceptance effect since the PS2 was HEAVILY bought by 20 somethings who had grown up with consoles.
GF: "No, you're not spending $300 on a silly game box!"
BF: "But it plays DVDs too! You can use it to watch and !"

Women justify all sorts of stupid shit the exact same way. It works.

*March 2000

>PS2 sold 140 million consoles because for 9 months of its lifespan it "may" have been affordable as a DVD player

are you actually fucking retarded?

Are you really so stupid as to not understand how a sudden burst of dvd drive manufacturing drives down the cost of dvd technology? This is how i'm certain you're 16, you can't even understand economies of scale. Prices plummeted after the PS2 came out, dvd sales skyrocketed, and even people not interested in playstation picked up dvd players.

Yeah yeah nice "proof" retard. Note how NO ONE in the "it was the cheapest dvd player at the time" ever has any actual evidence of this. Post proof or fuck off.

It was buying a game console and getting the DVD player essentially free.

If I could just put my 2 cents in, the first DVD player I owned living in the UK was a Toshiba that I forget the model number of and cost me £150 GBP *on sale* in 2002.
I'm sure your $99 DVD players existed, but I remember DVD reviews used to have compatibility warnings because of bugs in the player firmwares. We were still years away from DVD playback being a solved problem and that Toshiba was literally the cheapest one that people seemed to agree could play anything.
Before I got that I used my PS2, which was pretty solid, but being in bongland I used RGB SCART and sadly the PS2 wouldn't output DVDs in RGB. They obviously didn't feel capable of a high performance YUV to RGB convertor. Component wasn't popular here so I had to watch in composite which wasn't really showing off the benefits of a new format.

Point to where I said it was the cheapest dvd player of all time? Protip: You can't.

Proof? A link? Source of any kind? I suppose you think most people bought a PS1 for the free CD player too?

I'm from Europe knew loads of people with an xbox

Oh look still no proof. How very usual. Like, every thread usual.

CD players were ubiquitous when the ps1 came out, so unlikely.

You're underestimating the hype at the time from jumping from an analog tape to a dvd with crystal clear quality and random access. It was huge.

I didn't know a SINGLE owner of a PS2 who's house didn't also already have a stand alone DVD player and i was just a Bong army kid

We got our ps2 on release and by that Christmas my parents got us all $99 Apex dvd players. By then everyone had multiples of them. I don't think most people used them as living room dvd players by the end of that year.

Probably due to the lack of remote. I didn't know anyone who owned the ps2 dvd remote and just used the controller. Not ideal in a living room situation.

The remote was pretty overpriced IIRC thats why people didn't bother with it. But most of sony's add ons were overpriced at the time.

Yep, this. Also why is the PS2 the only console or electronic with an addedd feature where said feature is treated as a fraud and a negative point?

I was wondering this today actually. I think it would have sold well due to brand loyalty from PSX and the full BC. But it wouldn’t have sold as well. Even as well as it sold, people tend to forget that the 50+ millions units in the 150+ million units sold number were sold after the PS3 and Wii had come out.

Why did the GameCube fail so bad? I think playing movies was one of the reasons but all the usual reasons given by people don’t make sense. Nobody cared what it looked like, the mini DVDs were fine and could hold 95% of PS2 and Xbox games. It actually had a lot of third party support in the first couple years. It was so cheap especially when it was $99. Nintendo missed the boat when they were unable to take advantage of the demand during that one holiday where they ran out and when they restocked nobody cared. Keep in mind that the Xbox barely sold any more and is also a failure. Nintendo and Xbox had to share the sloppy seconds together and fragmented what otherwise mostly would have gone to Nintendo.

It makes very little sense that the PS2 with its fragile plastic build, shitty laser that didn’t read discs, and over complicated architecture that made for a lot of worse than Dreamcast early ports (not to mention most of the library is 640x240i due to 4MB VRAM) became the success it did. Must have been some sacrifices to the devil involves along with some soul selling
