If you want my honest opinion, I thought Fates was better. Adjutants are a watered down and shallower version of pair up, with less tactical thought behind it when considering the approaches of your opponents. The class system is much worse than Fates. There are no trade offs with cavalry or fliers. None. This is even more true with fliers than with cavalry, as cavalry could theoretically get bogged down in some bad terrain on some maps. The number of classes is small and they all perform similarly since all classes wield the same weapons.

Gambits were a fun idea but are clearly imbalanced, while the removal of the weapon triangle was a mistake which cannot even be justified. It's literally just a regression for the series, which makes the game worse than previous FE games which had it. People will chime in with "B-but lancebreaker! and other breaker skills!" It's a nonsense argument for several reasons. First of all, it doesn't improve the early game when those skills don't exist. Secondly, I saw one enemy in my entire playthrough who had a weapon breaker skill. Because of the paucity of enemy skills in general, you rarely have to make judgments about who to move forward. Maps are all about routing enemies quickly and effortlessly, with very little threatening you from mowing things down as fast as possible. The game almost never throws a curveball at you like Fates did. Fates would occasionally throw in some guy with a beast killer or units that swapped places with your own units or archers with counter or other shit like that to throw you off your game. There's nothing like that here, and it makes the game boring after awhile.

I agree gameplay-wise Fates is better but only with regards to Conquest's fantastic maps. I honestly couldn't give a fuck about any of the characters or story in Fates and the fact that Conquest was only a third of a game makes me consider 3H a better product overall.

I definitely don't agree with this. In 3H they can mount and dismount and still take actions and move, and thus any theoretical disadvantage they have is rendered moot. On top of all that, they are just outright stronger than infantry classes due to their far greater mobility and canto. I think most FE players know that cavalry and fliers are always among the most dominant classes, but here in Three Houses they are treated more like a straight upgrade than a trade off. That's a problem, because it forces all characters down the same class upgrade path so that by the end of the game you're running a mongolian horde with magic and an airforce.

To be clear about something else, I don't hate 3 Houses. In fact, far from it. I enjoy the game. It's "good." I'm dozens of hours into it and still playing. Some things are way better than Fates. The lore is the best that FE has had in awhile. I like the monastery shit, and gambits are fun even if they're broken. They remind me a lot of Dynasty Tactics.

I just think the game has a few weak spots, which could be improved with patches to difficulty or classes.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I enjoyed all of those levels as they forced me to think about what I was doing and change my approach, rather than just blitzing through the level. I remember clearing the foxes on my first try, though with some difficulty. I remember I did so by forming an awesome conga line around the Southern bridge to cockblock the foxes with pass; pass was the real hard part about the level rather than the foxes' exploitation of beasts and cavalry. I rarely have to put a similar level of thought into deployments in Three Houses. I just toss out stride and go murder everything. If there's an artillery, sometimes I may use a broken gambit or warp or a high mobile unit to overcome it.

I do think lunatic mode may fix some of my grievances.

Ferdinand has good speed growths but miserable growth rates elsewhere, at least from my experience. If you got bad speed growths on him, he's fucked.

He was fucked for me too, though still ended up with good speed. I made him a dancer and in conjunction with his passive that boosts avoid at full health, he is a serviceable dodge tank support unit.

By the way, I do agree with a point made above about how 3 Houses handles hit and evasion a little better, making the high speed units viable. This is one of the things I do like better about 3 houses compared to Fates, even though I did prefer Conquest better. Dodge tanks are pretty usable in certain scenarios, and I've had good success with dodging with characters such as Felix, Petra, Ingrid and Ferdinand.

I agree that the class system is pretty stupid, dismount basically makes mounted units have no weaknesses which should just be removed. Calvalry do majorly cuck a units speed growth, my Sylvain was getting doubled by everyone because I made him a paladin.
Gambits are disgustingly strong especially the one dimitri gets after the timeskip. They don't have nearly as much of a drawback as they should.
I would be fine with the removal of the weapons triangle if more enemies had the breaker skills, but as it is now I just had ingrid dodge tank everything including axe units because alert stance is so broken.
The only map that really stood out was the 3 way battle post timeskip, since there were more enemies than usual to worry about. There was also the village map where they have the death knight warp in which was pretty cool.

I've seen this point made before, but it's overstated. The difference in stats is not that large. Additionally, by the end game it really doesn't matter. By the time you're at the master classes, it's more important to have the versality of a mount than a few more points in stats on level up. Cavalry and fliers did have downsides in Fates. Fliers could get sniped while Cavalry could get killed more easily by certain weapon types. There were a few more factors to consider as well, such as if you were throwing out a cavalry with a sword unit and an enemy just so happened to wield that one axe weapon that reversed the weapon triangle and doubled its effects or a sword breaker sort of weapon.

Don't get me wrong. I won't dispute that cavalry and fliers were strong in Fates. Shelter was really broken for example. But there were some occasions where they could get you in trouble. Also, if you make the point that you dislike the kitsune level, you can't also make the point that cavalry was invincible (I don't know if that was you or another user, but I feel like pointing it out that this level was designed to fuck with beasts/cavs). Cavalry did have to be somewhat protected in that level for instance. They could be used, but they could get slaughtered if you weren't careful. There's never an instance in 3 Houses where I think to myself that a cavalry unit or flier will get slaughtered if I'm not careful on the basis of them being a cavalry or flier unit.

I gotta confess that I'm mostly talking about Conquest here. I didn't spend much time in Birthright or Revelations and didn't beat either of them because I got bored. I finished Conquest by contrast and spent the most time in it.

I did think pair up was an enjoyable mechanic in Fates. It made me put some more thought into the player turn, as there were frequent cases where the enemy themselves would abuse it offensively and could inflict a lot of damage on units if I wasn't careful. It added something tangible for the game to me. By contrast, adjutants add nothing to the game at all to me and I only use them passively to level up supports. My adjutants tend to be benched units who are crap and add nothing. However, even when I put in some of my main characters as adjutants in maps with lower unit limits, they almost never do anything worthwhile in the adjutant role. It's a shallow and useless system to me from a gameplay perspective, as big a throwaway as fishing, whereas with pair ups I felt that they definitely added something to the tactical side of the game.

Mercedes gets the worst of it. She had literally flawless hair before the time skip, and I want to marry her, but her short hair after is a huge turn off...
