I know that my viewpoint is in the minority here, and that I'm the only one who hates games like Metroid: Other M, but please understand that Metroid used to be a really good series before Nintendo decided that Samus needed to be waifu bait and be emotional every 5 seconds, complete with cinematics and cutscenes thrown in your face constantly. I just don't get why people want Other M to be the new face of the series. It's why I want Samus to be a robot, particularly an inhuman robot, because you can't write a serious story about robots having feelings.

Nier is such a terrible game with a terrible story that they had to make the main robots look humanoid so people would overlook the cringeworthy plot and frankly terrible gameplay, which makes nu-god of war look like Ninja Gaiden. A character the player controls would inherently have some humanizing characteristics. A writer would have to intentionally dehumanize a character to consider them inhumane. Hal-9000 is inhuman by his lack of empathy and cold nature, not just because he's a light in a wall. Wall-E is humanized by his display of emotion over looking human. In Nier, 2B isn't humanized just by her appearing human, but her becoming more emotional. Her being said to be otherwise initially dehumanizes her. A inhumane character would be hard to construct because it would require explicit examples of what makes them inhumane, and that would make them extremely unlikable and unrelatable.

A medium should always be focused on its primary element, the thing that separates it from other mediums. Video GAMES are about GAMEPLAY. Movies should be about cinematography. I'm not trying to say games should be movies, despite how successful Basedny is from doing it, but you're suggesting Metroid be devoid from story. Even the most archaic of video games employ some form of story. Mario saving pauline, Link saving hyrule, Pac-man avenging his son. A narrative is what drives a player forward, and a narrative stems from the protagonist's motives. People like the character's in Zelda games, Mario games, and why else is Pokemon a money printing machine. Taking any all characterization from Samus would make her extremely blank and kill any narrative in the games.

You can totally humanize a cold, emotionless robot character beyond forcing him to emote. You could easily frame his cold demeanor as fragility, a flaw, or a humorous quirk, or a necessity. You can imply or project emotion where there is none through the tone, the story, dialogue, even the character design, whatever. Of course you still wouldn't easily relate to the character at that point but doesn't at all mean he can't be likable or captivating.

Also, "inhuman" and "inhumane" don't mean the same thing.

Many of the most memorable moments in games aren't tied to an instance of mechanical brilliance, but to a response to a particularly emotional moment prompted by the story associated with it.

Take the battle with Mother Brain in Super Metroid. Mechanically, you receive a full-heal and an overpowered weapon without any sort of prompting on the player's part. Narratively, Samus is saved by her decision to spare a creature she had been ordered to eliminate, at the cost of that creature's life and given the means by which to take revenge against a personal enemy that just bereaved her of another life that was precious to her. The story elements surrounding that moment and the baby Metroid elevated the impact of what the gameplay could provide.
