There's a massive fucking gray area between imitating real life perfectly and being Dragon Ball Z. The fact that this series has always been about slapping anime monsters with oversized weapons means not a fucking soul refers to perfect realism when they say it used to be more grounded or that they want it to be more grounded.

It's hard to imagine someone being so boneheaded that you can't tell a stylistic difference between monsters like Anjanath, Nargacuga and Lagiacrus compared to the likes of Valstrax, Glavenus or Xenojiva. If you want to have neon proto-dragons that glow and shoot lasers, that's cool, your opinion, but pretending it's the same and equally outlandish as most of the old roster is just disingenuous. Same for moves like Helm Splitter or weapons like Insect Glaive, Hammer or DB doing quadruple air flips that let the hunter casually jump on top of a Diablos. Armor sets that look more and more like you play as some small Gundam mecha rather than a hunter whose smiths use medieval technology.

Village, for single player progression and "story. Typically used as the game's tutorial to get you ready for online. Monsters often have much scaled back HP and damage.

Hub/Port: This is where the bread and butter is. Multiplayer, as well as the option to tackle these hunts solo/offline if you really want to. These are the monsters with their normal stats. And scaling in MH isn't monster having more health, it's a percent reduction for your attack value on how much damage you do. It only ever applied that if you had more than 1 hunter. So solo was still the same experience that the monster was designed for. But if you 2 man it, it would scale for just standard multiplayer. It didn't scale off of 2, 3, or 4 players specifically.

The idea was to nerf the hunters as to not make a monster a complete joke and retain challenge.

If scaling is an issue for you, I recommend only playing village for the older titles.

it's simply just a % based damage multiplier that lowers damage of all the hunters in the part by a certain amount.

Even if you hop into hub, so long as you're solo, you won't get that damage adjustment.

But the monster will feel tougher due to it's Health pool and damage being it's normal, true values. Low rank village is the easiest monster hunter can get. High rank village is similar to low rank Hub, etc.

Game was always balanced around Hub to begin with.
