Yes, but only with a good enough headset and controller set. I was playing some shitty asset flip skiing game on a friend's Vive, and it's surprisingly fun in VR. And it only gets better with actually good games like Superhot and Rez Infinite.

Pick up a first gen oculus off ebay for ~$200 and fuck around with it. It is good fun and like nothing else I've tried. Game selection is... poor right now but with boneworks and whatever the fuck valve is making coming out the library will get a tad bigger.

I got it last April. It's been absolutely worth it for me.

I went to a VR arcade recently and played 30 minutes of SUPERHOT with a VIVE.
It gave me a good understanding on the value of the headest, and i can safely say that it's only worth it if you plan on using it a lot; i'd still play my desktop games more often than VR games, simply because it is as you say, a gimmick.
It's only worth it if you have a disposable income and intend on using it actively.
I viewed myself purchasing a VR headset the same way i would view myself purchasing a console, I don't feel confident spending hundreds of dollars for hardware so i can play the 3 exclusive games that i'm interested in.

Somewhat novel at first because you can surround yourself with huge screens but fapping with a VR headset on gets uncomfortably hot and you need it on tight so it doesn't shake too much. 'VR porn' videos are nothing special, just like flat videos with some camera control and peripheral vision. Some company is scanning porn actresses into 3d models for VR so it might get better.

VR adult games feel like a much better use of the tech, 6DOF and the ability to move in a 3d environment make them more immersive. It's the difference between feeling like you're zooming in on her ass and actually moving closer to it, except this one is also interactable so you can slap it for some physics jiggle. These kind of games are making slow progress but the potential is there.

Personally, for me, it’s worth it. I spend about 3-4 hours a day in Pavlov, and 1-2 in VR chat and poker stars when I’m a little drunk / buzzed.

I like VR. Just for the social aspect. A lot of people say there is no games, and i guess generally they are correct, but the social aspect of these games can't be understated. Hopping into VR chat or Pokerstars Or table top sim or platforma to talk with friends instead of using a normal voice chat really is fun. You get to be way more emotive.

Even more boring games like NMS and ED are more fun in VR.

There's a lot of decent milsim type games, onward is basically VR insurgency and pavlov is vr counter strike, complete with TTT mods.

All in all its really very fun. I enjoy VR a lot. I've probably gotten 100ish hours in VR after owning my index for about 3 weeks now.

Guns have a bug, most of them just have a ghost mag, but some like sawn-off are bugged forever if they are dropped while mid-reloading. M249 too, I think.
Scoreboards are fucked for 10+ players, you'll only see some random bullshit. Same for votekicking and muting.
Dev says you only notice bugs if you play 100+ hours so he doesn't want to waste time fixing them. OG Vive without DAS? I think you'll manage in 500€. I'd get the Deluxe Audio Strap as it's pretty good. Be aware Vive is a bit outdated compared to Index, and the controllers are pretty eh. Will probably last longer than Index ones tho.

Is anyone else surprised by how well classic FPS games translate to VR?
Serious Sam, Quake, and Doom are all great fun; albeit Doom having some problems since things are so modular.
Not every mod pairs well with VR.
But for the most part, the fast paced run and gun gameplay works perfectly.
I bet it would make quite a few newcomers a little queezy though.

This, RE7 was awesome with VR, even if aiming is tied to the head.

The biggest problem with VR right now is that more or less everyone getting into it is just thinking about the Wii or Kinect, which were casual and gay. Until the market becomes big enough for it (if that ever happens), it will never escape being flooded with wagglan shovelware.

If the price of a headset is a significant investment to you, then it isn't worth it. If $500 is pretty much nothing, then it's a fun gimmick. I got a vive a couple of years ago, and I use it maybe once a week.

I have a Valve Index, and honestly, I do feel a bit regret. Mainly over having dropped 1200$ on it (I needed third party lenses). The biggest issue, is really just lack of games. So much tech demo trash, and even the best of the best for VR isn't as good as a good PC indie game. Hopefully we'll get some good games coming out before the Index is outdated.

Honestly, if all you're expecting is a neat toy you'll use once or twice a week, you'll enjoy it. For the first couple of weeks you'll use it every day, then the novelty will wear off and you'll use it less and less until you find yourself only using it when an interesting game or "experience" comes out. I enjoy my psvr, but I recognize it for what it is, a tech toy I'm only going to use occasionally. If you go into it expecting it to change your life or change the way you play games forever, you're going to be disappointed.

VR Headsets do not replace traditional games. Sometimes I can go weeks without using my VR but I do use it a lot, specially when interesting games come out. Just yesterday I spent 12 hours playing No Man's Sky. I am not even into sandbox games but it's absolutely mesmerizing in 1st person VR.

People are under the impression that "VR has no games" but only because traditional gaming sources do not give proper attention to it. You need to follow VR-focused websites, channels and communities in order to know what's coming. The truth is that there are new VR games coming out every week, you just need to know how to find them.

Some people like to just hang out in VRChat all day. Others like to participate in the Beat Saber community and play/make mods, then there's people playing VR Shooters and plenty more people playing on PSVR. You will have to find a niche that's right for you.

Curiously enough, PSVR has arguably the most stable version of NMS VR right now simply because Sony doesn't allow games to be published unless they run without drops. Sure the pop-in can get atrocious sometimes and it's hard to know where you're landing from orbit but it sure beats having to go through NMS forums and looking for what config files you need to edit so your GPU will stop stuttering.

It's not PS4Pro enhanced yet so it might get to look better for those that have it.

I had one of these. Paid the same amount, and sold it a month later for $270.

It was fine I guess, no problems getting shit to work and the controllers were adequate, but none of the VR games really grabbed me outside of the initial wow factor of using it on stuff like Superhot.

I'm glad to be rid of it and I doubt I will ever buy another one.

PSVRs are confirmed to continue working on the PS5. They will likely release a better one but you're safe for another 3 years at least. And they're the cheapest, too.

It's got low resolution compared to the standard PC HMDs but it has a better screen, better lenses, most comfortable to wear and it's the only one actually getting exclusives. Sony is serious enough to fund 1st party exclusives, including from 1st party studios. PC could never offer that.

I suggest you try it out first though. It's obviously inferior in graphics and resolution but it's more than enough for playing games. Certainly way better than a Quest and people eat that up.

I think those things will depend entirely on whether or not the next PSVR will have the same tracking system as the current one. If they go with inside tracking or switch to more cameras/lighthouses, I think it's rather unlikely.

Don't listen to this idiot. It's a breeze to install, and works perfectly fine. Some minor things like not being able to fully seat a magazine in a pistol with HHH but most games just make you put the make in the bottom of the magwell to reload anyways and HHH has a setting for that. No stations works fine unless you're retarded and flail around like an 8 year old or you're trying to shove the controllers up your own ass and need tracking.

I bought a Lenovo Explorer for 180$ new off Amazing with controllers and it works great. Will tie me over until either the Index drops to under 500$ or something better comes along (FOV is really shitty and I want eye-tracking).

It's for porn. That's it. And if you get an Odessey, you need a really healthy USB setup. You can't have a bunch of shit plugged into one hub. You need a PCI-E USB card with its own power source, and 1 dedicated hub for your Bluetooth dongle (controllers), and another for your headset on a completely different hub. They need to have a full monopoly of all power and bandwidth or shit gets really jacked up. It can't track properly unless it's getting all the power and resources of a private plug not shared with anything else.

I’ve tried both, and while the Index is better on paper, the difference is scarcely noticeable. The S also has the added benefit of inside-out tracking, so no sensors or setup, severely diminished godrays, it’s way more comfortable to wear, and there’s next to no light bleed in.

How good are the base stations for the Index? I have an original Rift and I would lose tracking a lot. It seems that the Index stations don't need to be connected to the PC? If so, that would be immensely helpful in actually setting them up in good locations.

While I believe, Waggle was a huge gimmick, kinect has potential outside the gaming space, voice controls as well. 3DTVs died out because its expensive plus not everyone can enjoy 3D. People with eye conditions can make 3D impossible and it causes nausea and sickness for some others watching it. Ex couldn't watch ANY 3D movie, nor VR headset

VR while gimmicky has amazing potential in the gaming space, and unlike years ago, the time is better than ever for VR to blossom.

Shit like Superhot, beat saber, and Robo recall paved the way for short, fun VR experiences and actual fun gameplay. Assuming they're the same as the Vive stations (which I think is mostly true), the tracking is nearly perfect and it should work everywhere in the play area so long as you get good positions for the lighthouses.
