I disagree, extra content is usually pretty forgettable while better graphics improve the entire experience. This is like recommending DQ8 for 3DS over PS2. Yeah you get some bonus dungeons and items but you miss so much more just back knocking down the visual and audio quality for the whole game.

The visual style is a huge part of what makes Dragon Quest so appealing always has been.

The Dragon Quest 3 port for the SFC has really detailed enemy sprite animations, they dropped these in the later ports, this is why DQ3 is still best on SFC.

Yeah, the resolution is depressing, but if all you have is a Switch it's a surprisingly solid port that still looks good and runs well. If that was my only option I wouldn't dwell too bad about it. Because it wasn't just ported. That's the point. They tried porting the game to Switch and found it needed a whole new engine. So they spent two years remaking the games engine and plugging everything in manually.

To put the same content on the PS4/PC versions, they'd have to do the reverse. Take the new content and put it into the PS4/PC engine. And any assets that is a Switch exclusive might need to be remade entirely if it's in a smaller resolution. This is not necessarily hard. But it's time consuming and costs money. And SquareEnix might not think the time spent doing it would make the money back. They were angry with Yuji Horii insisting they make a PS4 and Switch version of DQXI, saying it wasn't worth the cost and he should only make a 3DS version. But Horii just ignored them and did it anyway. The PS4 version definitely proved them wrong and I hope the Switch version does as well. Anything that puts SquareEnix in their place is a positive.

I would be mad if it was most any other series. But I knew the Switch version was coming when it was announced 5 years ago. I decided to get the PS4 version so I didn't have to wait a year to play it. I knew I'd play the game a second time if the Switch version got any good enhancements, which it did. And Dragon Quest is one of the few series I actually support with a purchase. So in all, I don't have a problem buying it again.

Plus, if I really want to, I can sell the PS4 version for at least half or more of it's original cost. DQ games retain their value. In fact, I bought two copies of Dragon Quest V when it launched, held onto it, and sold it for a $30 profit about 2 years later.

Sounds like you need a better TV. I have a discount TV and it still looks fine. While older games like RDR hurt my eyes when trying to spot rabbits or plants, despite having the same resolution as this game.

The reason is Dragon Quest XI is bright and colorful. You're not having to look for super small objects in a field of brown and grey bloom. One of the improvements in the Switch version is they made the blue glow for items even bigger and more noticeable.
