Game Freak feels the need to use Pokemon to tell a "dark, meaningful story" for some reason. Which apparently means characters speaking in cliched poems about philosophy and pointless cutscenes of your friends repeating their one joke every time you walk into a new area. (Get it? The fat kid loves to daaaance!!!)

It was a combination of different factors.
In gen 6 they finally realized that pokemon is a cash cow. They can make any game they want, they can be lazy, make retarded decisions, have gamecube graphics, people will still buy the game. They didn't put the battle frontier in ORAS, people still bought the game.
Another factor is that BW was supposed to be masuda's masterpiece, and it actually is. But unfortunately, the normies started complaining about it because they wanted their pikachu and charizard. So he stopped striving to make high quality products, and just make games for the sake of it. People in gamefreak followed his example, they just don't care about pokemon anymore, they see that the spark and passion that once were in the games are now gone forever. They don't care about making pokemon games, they just do it as a job.

Genwunners being genwunners is nothing new under the sun. There were issues with that game that cut far deeper than "I can't find my ratatta, KANTOOOOOOOOOOO". The region is completely linear and they make you stop what you're doing in order to force a shitty fanfic tier story nobody gave a fuck about. It's pokedex was also just a shitter version of Kanto's and is also known for having one of the most cancer metas of all time
