ESDF because I have access to more buttons via my left pinky and ring finger.
It's a pain in the ass to rebind everything though since WASD is the standard, so I only make the effort if I know I'll be putting a lot of hours into it.

ESDF is technically better, it's generally more viable if you have large hands. The main problem is if you play games which require frequently pressing the modifier keys then you'll be more likely to suffer from RSI. Same goes for pressing the space bar, though it is possible to get around this by changing the orientation of your keyboard slightly.

WASD is close enough to optimal for most games anyway. Especially considering modern games tend to be designed for a controller, so there are unlikely to be many keys to press anyway.

ESDF is better but not so much better to make rebinding >50% of every game worth it. ASDF works fine and the few games where I'm thirsty for more keys I can do ESDF for.

I've only used ESDF in MMORPGs and when emulating certain games not made for a keyboard. WASD is fine most of the time as you don't need that many keys.

In some games, it's a real pain in the ass, like those where they don't let you rebind to something that's already taken
