i believe it only counts player who played during the grand prix. however since play it very little and some only play the initial days of the grand prix it is very easy to be in the top 5%. i was almost at the top 5%, by 0.04% i believe by playing it only on weekends every now and then.
However people are dropping it because they get owned too hard online and have no idea about other mechanics like hopping or u-turning and it is not explained in the game.

They gave the advertised Fake Crash decal to everyone for free at the start of the GP due to a bug so rather than take it away from people not in the top 5% by "fixing" the bug, they let everyone keep it and instead made a new actual kart decal for the top 5% to receive.
Conversely this means if you didnt put in as much effort this GP thinking you were going to get the Fake Crash decal no matter what, you better start playing

The more I've played this, the more I've started to dislike the blue boost heavy tracks. You rarely have good races on them because everything hinges on one thing and the speed differences get so big. Tracks like Tiny Arena and Papu's Pyramid are way better

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, tracks like electron Avenue are cool and give lots of coins but the first one who gets lucky enough to keep his boost and not get hit by items is always the du king winner no matter. No amount of blue orbs and clocks will change that once you get a sizeable lead. I am not even that good and won a bunch by simply getting a shield or two and saving myself from items early on. Even when hit by multiple items later I still kept my lead.

Only way to catch someone with a lead is for a badly timed orb/clock that screws them but not you, a trap item on the track from the previous lap, or you get a mask and haul some ass. Missiles, bombs, and beakers dont go fast enough to hit someone at USF speed unless you nail them at a corner as they take a wide turn
