Sales are one thing, but you should take into account how much profit and revenue the companies actually made from their gaming divisions.
Or you know, the games. But Sony fans only ever talk about sales since it's all they can "win" at (unless of course they lose at that, then they move goalposts).

some of the best games of all time were on these consoles, regardless of which one you had(except maybe dreamcast, sadly), you had a great library of games. It was also the last generation before smartphones and easy access to the internet, which has definitely impacted the industry in a negative way.

Production of games has slowed to a crawl with modern technology resulting in fewer good games that are 200hrs long. They can't really war out like in the past.

As a Gamecube fag, I say PS2.
I love the Gamecube lineup way more than the PS2 one, but you'd have to be a delusional as FUCK Nintengay to claim the PS2 didn't destroy its generation. I owned both because, as a teenage Megaman X fan I was dying to play X7. if only I had known.
Solid lineup, tons of games, the console with the best RPGs of its gen, poor's man DVD player when DVD was still somewhat of a low tier bourgeois thing and it escaped the "kiddie" label which fell on the Gamecube because bing bing wahoo. It had everything going for itself and a killer marketing campaign that AHNIHILATED its only worthy competitor, the Dreamcast. It fucking won.

Arguably Sony, PS2 was incredibly dominant during that generation and had a library that dwarfed its competitors. You can make the argument that Gamecube won the long game with a wide enthusiast audience still playing not only Melee but plenty of Gamecube classics.
