I've been thinking of playing Disciples 2. What's the deal with expanded base game and Rise of Elves being different releases?

4 is honestly quite lackluster in many ways, and balance falls apart in late game because heroes become literal gods.

3, 5 and 6. 3 is the most popular because its both classic and has most factions. 5 has slightly less factions but one of its expansions gives a second evolve option for all faction units instead of just 1.

6 is the last HoMM that is still decent, graphically the best looking one, balanced lower tier faction units so that theres no useless zombie-type of units anymore and has elegant solutions that eliminate mule-heroes and ninja-capping bullshittery. But it also has the least amount of content and factions from the three games.

But 95% of the time they were useless thanks to their slowness. In Heroes VI even Tier 1 units have some gimmick to them that make them obviously useful. Like for instance Haven has no peasants anymore, T1 starts from useful squires that get free retaliations if friendlies next to them get hit. Or the new naga-faction has a ranged attacker/healer as the T1 unit.

4 was developed when 3DO was almost bankrupt already, the expansions were rushed and second one released just few months before 3DO died and took New World Computing with it.

If upgraded version in III can be discounted even though they often gain new properties or sometimes even get significantly different stats, then Crusaders are just upgraded Squires, Tigers are just upgraded Wolves and so on.
In b4 muh visuals: upgraded creatures in III have different visuals as well, often significantly.

Classes in both games aren't very meaningful. In IV most are really shitty and give fairly forgettable bonuses, in III it's essentially just "faction's warrior class, factions mage class" with specializations playing a huge role.

Artifacts in III have greater diversity of function. Also IV has this problem of having to put everything that affects creatures on a single hero, very frequently obsoleting various +X% to Y type artifacts.
