I kept thinking everything was going to be okay, but Griffith would have some regiment of soldiers show up and destroy the island forcing everyone to leave and go deal with him.

Now I'm thinking Skull Knight is here just so the absolutely hear+soul+body destroyed Guts can do a cheesy "my place isn't with you anymore / things will never be alright with me around / I accomplished my mission" and straight up ask Skelly to bring him away from the island.

Skelly wants the best for him. Guts will never be happy as long as he is bound with chains of destiny. He should go away and become the same type of being as skelly so he would be able to stand directly against God Hand.

Well, from Guts' POV Casca now has a chance to not be a potato while if he stays around she'll suffer non stop from simply looking at him. She could leave a normal life if it wasn't for the Brand fucking her over in the after life so his next plan will probably be to go try and deal with Griffith alongside Gaiseric

I think Miura was quoted at one point saying a happy ending would feel "disingenuous" although he may have changed his mind over the years.

There's probably gong to be happy ending for Casca and their son, with Griffith's spirit being banished from his body.
But Guts will most likely become a supernatural entity just like Skull Knight and never see them again, waging endless war against God Hand.

Miura has said that there won't be a bad ending. So at the very least we'll get a bittersweet one
