Because whoever was in the flame emporers outfit was responsible for the tragedy of Duscur. He and Edelgard liked each other as kids and so it hurts extra when he sees her in that outfit. He already has severe PTSD and depression from that and just kinda loses it and wont listen to reason anymore or think it through. This could have calmed down a bit if Edelgard didn't declare war against the realm. When he returns home he is betrayed, arrested and tortured before Dedue rescues him. He is then left alone for five years waging a one man war against Edelgards army. Edelgard also puts/leaves someone in charge of Fhaerghus who fucking destroys the parts of the realm they are in charge off.

Basically he fucking loses it in a craze of PTSD and just keeps tumbling down.

The only one I'd have any kind of contention with is Lyn (and MAYBE Eirika). Lyn is definitely boring but so is Eliwood and most other lords in the series. The implication here is that Lyn is more boring than the average FE protagonist and that is not true.

And the slithers were controlling the empire from behind the scenes anyway; if Edelgard didn't throw the continent into chaos, it's likely nothing would've changed anytime soon since the slithers didn't get opportunistic and try to wipe out their enemies openly until the middle of the war (and this is the case in every route where they become a factor).

Could there have been a different approach taken? Possibly. But none of the people Edelgard surrounded herself with could just be trusted outright. That's not realistic when heresy and open rebellion is punished exclusively by death and when your family line was basically stripped of the majority of its power by the prime minister and his slither friends until you actively started working with them yourself.

Regardless of what you might think of Edelgard, there's no denying she's a wonderfully written villain. She's not a one note "UNGA ME BAD ME CONQUER EVERYTHING" like other FE baddies. She's considered evil because of the actions she takes for her ideals, she believes that the end justifies the means which is why she'll burn everything against her path to achieve her goals for a bright future for Fodlan. In a way she's a tragic villain who believes she's doing the right thing even if it ends with the deaths of millions.
Her retarded white knights don't realize that this is what makes her character interesting and they instead decide to shitpost about how she's a didnu muffin.

BE route would likely be the most interesting route by far if they actually went all in on letting you play the villain (including having a tragic ending where things start to fall apart because lol played right into the cultist's hands).

Most of these people would genuinely like her more if she was actually evil for evil's sake and leaned into it rather than someone who believes she's doing the right thing and has her reasons even if her resolve to achieve her goal means she does bad things and makes use of bad people along the way.

They see her characterisation in her own route as "trying to justify her actions" as if she should have no justification for her actions and that would make her a better character.

The "she did nothing wrong" crowd are obviously memeing or outright wrong, but it doesn't change the fact that with Byleth's support when she's able to hold onto herself she's not really even close to evil.

She's also very unfortunate in that her goal of eliminating the Nobility combined with her legitimately good chances of being able to do that (thanks to the military strength of the Empire) would have been a huge rallying cry to the downtrodden masses and the war rendered largely unnecessary (or the Lords of the Kingdom and the Alliance would've had to prove themselves the "evil" pragmatists by putting down the rebellions).

She wouldn't even have needed the slitherers in a situation like that and could've dealt with them immediately instead of tying them off as loose ends after the war.

But all that goodwill she would have garnered with the commoners was stifled by the fact she was pointing a sword at the source of hope for most of them, even if it is secretly run by a reptillian.
