I played a lot of gachas in the past years and i can say that out of all the guilds i've been into, the whales are 80% asians (SEA and nips) with a job but no commitent, they're also pretty cringy every time they're chatting or talking about things, i don't know if that correlates.
Westerners are a lot more cold headed and the contrast is notable in your average gacha discord guild.

It probably has the highest production values and pretty good balance between "auto" content and manual content. Also really generous on giving free gacha rolls and has a lot to unlock if you care about that sort of thing.

I fell into the trap playing Raid: Shadow Legends, figuring I'd try it out because for an f2p mobile game, I noticed it had decent graphics, what appeared to some gameplay, decent voice acting, decent though trite music, and soooort of a plot.
Which surprised me. That said I haven't kept up with mobile games/graphics, so maybe I'm wrong. But anyway, I tried it out.

At first, you feel like your playing a game and all that.
They do a good job of distracting you and disguising the quality of the actual gameplay. Eventually though, that stops mattering. You start to find that the game is just to find "easier" ways to grind, level, rank up and spin the gacha. The elemental system stops mattering much. You can't unequip equipment ('artifacts') without spending in-game currency. The heroes you can have are limited and the game presses you to sacrifice an increasing number of them so one of them can rank up.

Over time, you think "if I just bought a mega xp double crystal discounted beginner's starter daily pack, I could find that hero". So you spend that money, your blood starts pumping . You think alright this time I can get him. Then, you either don't and do it again, or move on to the next hero you need...
Then they hit you with random potion drops to keep improving your heroes.

It just keeps piling on and as you only slowly start to realize this isn't really a game; You've been using almost the same attacks over and over, healing and other strategic elements have ridiculous cooldown, there's no "defend" or turn passing option. You find that you are now hooked.

That is why they are popular.

I misspoke a little. Raid is KIND OF a game. There are SOME parts that require strategy, but to use the strategy, you have to grind.

Come to think of it, Raid has a pretty brilliant model in that way...

If you make a decent strategic system, but force players to spend money on a fucking $50 in-game currency pack to actually develop their strategy, you can keep actual gamers interested a while longer.

2) A lot of people don't know the word gacha
3) The word gacha doesn't mean "gotcha" to begin with. It is a shortening of the word "gashapon" which is what Japan calls capsule toy vending machines (pic related) and they reason they call it gashapon is because it is a combination of two onomatopoeic words Japanese people associate with the sound of a hand crank and something popping out.
4) A word they happened to use that kind of looks like one particular word in a completely different language isn't a good basis for anything, especially since Japanese is a syllabic language so "gacha" is only two fucking characters long and thus could mean a lot of things, as I've sort of shown.

I will admit this is true, but that still means needing a huge investment of time (daily gated time, at that) to level units and possible exclusion of some, due to luck. At best I've seen something similar to Dynasty Warriors or a generic JRPG in grinding for EXP or crafting material drops, which can be fun but can get very dull. And I wouldn't exactly call Warriors Orochi 2 one of the top video games out there because of that.

Actually, I've had my fair share of dips with the game. Sometimes, I would only log in and get the dailies and a lot of the time I'd comeback when they were doing the free rolls.

But then I started seeing how the weapons grid actually works (better than late the never) and started seeing what characters did what, building teams was a lot of fun. Combine that with the free rolls and shit over my past 2 years of playing and I've got a solid team (obv not enough to do the super hardcore raids and shit) of each element save for Earth.

Though I can see why the grind would burn people out.

The Summer stream was basically just a giant middle finger to f2p though

Gun girls are inherently superior in my patrician opinion. Their designs don't rely on stupid citadels or turrets or wings to bring out their "thing". It's as simple as slapping a gun onto a girl. You can take better character inspiration from the gun's origins or notoriety like WA and Welrod. Or you can slap an OC Donut with a gun and make it work.

Except shotguns, but to be fair their "shields" as minor compared to other gacha.

Actually, it's pretty much the opposite. The ultimate goal is to have everybody playing constantly, just willing to play the same content constantly so that no development time is spent. If somebody stopped playing then they'd forget and stop spending money every month. Keep them playing, keep them on the grind, and they'll drop their monthly $80 because they're still "playing" and still "invested" in the game.

The formula for going deep into gacha games is to throw powerful, high-level units at your enemies until they die. It very quickly becomes impossible to win with 1-3 star units no matter how skilled a person is or how deep their mastery of strategy is. The casual sees this and rejoices, for nether skill nor strategy are his games.
