>How fucking long is this demo, bros?
10 hours
I give Square a lot of shit, but this like the Octopath Switch and Brave 3DS demo being this long to really give you a taste of the game is pretty based.
It's pretty long, I still haven't beat it. There's a very fun photo mode, also, but screenshots of the game shouldn't be trusted, the photo mode can spruce up how the game looks for a second to make it look better than it does. It's a bit low res, although it looks fine.
who cares? the purpose of the photo mode is to share dumb/funny pics of things without a HUD in the way. It's barely any different than the actual game anyway, it slightly increases LoD of a few objects and that's about it.
Ah, just for people who are on the fence about buying the Switch for the game or something like that. I'm having fun with it.
I really can’t get into the mindset of someone that would pass on a Dragon Quest game over graphics of all fucking things
It is a very gorgeous looking game on all accounts. One of the best looking of the gen, even.
>octopath broke million on switch
Wonder how well this will sell
>Nintendo pushing it like mad with marketing and Smash
like poundcakes baby
>Nintendo pushing it
IIRC it’s licensed as a Nintendo product, whatever that means. So was Octopath, come to think of it.
It'll sell millions in Japan. Will probably break 1 and a half in Europe/America, moderately breaking the previous record set by the last Nintendo distributed and advertised "new" release, IX.
Nintendo has published what seems like every non FF or Kingdom Hearts Square game outside of Japan for like the last 10 years on their systems.
Apart from DQ, what?
Looks like it's not as many as I thought if you take out DQ but, they published Bravely Default and Second, Octopath, and Twewy on Switch
>normie-tier RPG series
>comes out same year as Hero in Smash
>on the most normie-friendly system ever
>with normie-friendly QoL enhancements
I'd be surprised if it didn't break 1mil
It apparently didn't on PS4/PC. It's not that normie around here, only when Nintendo tries to rise it up.
>DQ
>"normie"
You mean Final Fantasy
>normie-tier rpg
Is it? Normalfags play shit like Witcher 3 and Skyrim, DQ seems pretty up there on the autism spectrum, and I don’t think it’s even that popular in the west.
DQ is "normie" but only in Japan, here is niche at best, though I'm curious if that will somewhat change now thanks to the latest marketing.
Is it our time bros? Is DQ finally gonna get over in the West?
It didn't already with the moderate success of XI on PS4/Steam?
It flopped on PS4/Steam. 600k sold in the west
It came out within days of Spidey PS4 so you can probably guess how that went
I'll backtrack, IX on DS? That one sold over a million. Maybe S-E thinks this game selling is directly tied to Nintendo or something.
900k and they are old numbers, try again.
Jesus, this is a long demo, it takes you all the way to Hotto. When exactly does it end?
Nintendo handled publishing duties for IX as well and marketed it a ton. I remember Reggie shilling it a bunch back in the day. That's why I bought it desu
900k for a legendary 30 year franchise across 2 platforms is still pathetically low.
is this guy kidding or is this demo really 10 hours long because holy fuck
4-5hrs
It’s not that bad desu it’s enough to warrant future games getting localized and that’s all we need, the less influence the western market has over it, the better, it’s probably at 1.2 million by now, add another 1 million thanks to the Switch and XI will become the best selling game of the series in the west by a large margin.
they really REALLY want you to buy the game
I know. Same as DQXIS. Which'll probably mean that the franchise will be at a standstill in popularity terms in the West for now even if it's a success on the Switch, which it'll probably be.
However, current day S-E is not the same as early 10s S-E. They're even publishing Scarlet Grace and SaGa games in the US/Europe now.
>new NPCs lie draconian quest modifier
I bet that'll make for fun screenshots.
does this game have any ecchi moments or borderline so? i only devote time into jrpgs that do
i didn't turn on any draconian quest when I started, should I restart and turn one on?
Are the draconian quests new? The embarassment stuff is fun as fuck.
Not really. You can dress the girls in lewd outfits and they'll show up in cutscenes, but that's about it.
I'm currently playing with hard enemies, lying villagers and two shames. It's fun.
Bunny girl outfit
Harder enemies and restricting experience are pretty good for a regular hard mode playthrough, the others can be fun at first but might get annoying later. You can turn any of them off whenever you want, but you can't turn them back on.
They were in the localized PS4 and PC versions, too, but there are more this time. There was one that prevented fleeing, but it looks like they took it out.
Google "puff puff dq".
It outsold dq8 already retard. Stay pathetically coping.
DQ8 sold way over a million.
Dragon Quest 11 on Switch has orchestral music but the the other versions are stuck with midi, this is some fucking hebrew shit. So you can't have both good visuals and music goy
Crikey!
>censored
yikes
no joke the demo is really long
The actual game is over 140 hours
Switch version has good visuals though
Not in the West. It did around 800k, majority NA sales.
I think only DQ VIII and IX sold over a million overseas. XI's close, will probably get there with the S version.
L3 is autorun on Switch, any other way to trigger first person mode?
You can mod orchestral on PC.
this, I will wait some months to see if this gets ported to pc
>probably
Guaranteed. It already sold minimum 700k (other user said 900k and I can believe that) and that was before smash.
I didn't put myself clearly. The S version will probably sell over a million on its own, is what I meant.
Reggie even showed himself playing it on a Nintendo Direct once
Fuck that, you shouldn't have to fix the game you buy this shit is huge in Japan they could have afforded to pay up for real music from the start.
>Westerners care more about Nu-Spiderman than fucking Dragon Quest
why do westerns suck so much?
How's 2-D mode?
Can't be used.
how's the audio compression though? audio usually sounds like SHIT on the switch
Not on the demo.
>audio usually sounds like SHIT on the switch
? You mean Dark Souls? It sounds fine, as most games do.
>Twewy on Switch
so they're to blame, then?
yes dark souls sounds awful
Distribution is not development as Octopath can tell you.
I preferred the midis.
That's just that specific port. Most things sound well.
>no veronica webms
Pathetic.
I don’t know about midi, but the music kinda sucks.
The invisible walls are also bothering me.
XC2 seems like a better game so far 2bh, but the game hasn’t really started yet. I hope it picks up soon
No more first person mode, they took it out.
what the hell is the point of running around in combat
What the fuck? Why?
Looks cool.
There isn't one
>XC2 seems like a better game so far 2bh
Yikes, DQ not enough titties for you?
I'm on PC so when and how do I marry Gemma?
Well i'm in a " dungeon " of sorts and its still not done
These fuckers might have actually gotten me to consider buying this game when I only did this to get the Spirit associated with playing the demo in Smash
I'm a massive autismo that never minded grinding so i've been enjoying plowing through things as my overleveled self.
Third act. One of the wishes you get from the trials. You'll know when you get there.
The music is boring, if you've ever played a DQ game you've basically heard it all. It all sounds the same to me
I loved XB2 but the extreme blurriness and a few mechanics (gacha, constant swapping out for field skills, merc missions) hold it back
How many DQ games did you play bros?
My first was V on DS, then I played IV and VI after that. Then IX on DS and finally VII on 3DS which I didn't finish for some reason. V is still my favorite out of those
Sweet thanks, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something obscure I would miss
Happy for the switch anons who get to pick different girls, but she's fine with me
Gemma is on auto win .
I skipped the game at first waiting for the Switch version, I thought the option to marry others was great but after playing the demo I don't want to leave Gemma alone
unless they let you marry Veronica, that may give me second thoughts
IV, V, VI, VII, VIII (PS2 and 3DS), IX and XI.
VIII still king.
Gemma really does grow on you doesn't she?
I loved the first part of the game just hanging out in Cobblestone and wanted nothing more than to live a peaceful simple life with her
She's charming with her weird accent
I've played all of them except VI, but I've only actually beaten IV, VII and XI. Playing DQ Builders 2 got me in the mood, so I'm playing DQ2 right now.
>gacha
Eh, it ties into salvaging and the economy, so you’re rolling all the time to get rid of boosters anyway, and it’s not like you pay real money for it, so I was okay with it.
>Merc missions
Again, it ties into rolling all the time, and it gets you a lot of field skills easily and quickly, I personally liked it.
>swapping
This is a real issue, they should have let you just use the inactive blades you have like just like the blades equipped on companions out of the party.
Nigga, DQXI has far more titties than XC2, and bigger ones outside of Dahlia.
Half the random NPCs have huge tits.
Is Yea Forums slow as fuck for anyone else these days? Clicking a thread makes me wait like 10 seconds to load and sometime there's that domain error bullshit. Weird
It's happening to me as well.
Only played V because the main character’s design was so good.
Other games seemed to be more of the same, but lamer.
Nigga, it's fucking Dragon Quest. Be careful what you're getting yourself into.
What's the embarassement stuff in the draconian options? I'm only going for harder enemies right now but I'm not against some more stuff
I've played and finished 9, 5 and 8 in that order. I played a little bit of 1, 2, 4 and 7, but dropped them because I didn't like some of the stuff they did and I had other games to play at the time. I've played a lot of the spinoffs though
You'd enjoy IV. It differs in that you get to play a bunch of different characters that team up in the end
Basically your character gets too shy during battle and will randomly skip a turn. It may also happen when talking to NPCs.
It's about 50 hours per act and there are 3 goddamned acts. 10 hours is 1/5th of 1/3rd of the game, and barely enough time to get to Sylvando.
Sometimes when you try to talk to NPCs you get embarrassed and can’t do it. You can try again, so you don’t miss out on anything. When you fight sometimes you get embarrassed and skip the turn, this is followed by short descriptive text like you meeting their eyes or thinking about what a burden you are on the party.
Great for role playing as yourself.
I went with the lying NPCs one too, but not sure what it actually does.
XC2 wasn't even that good. 8/10, but a huge drop in quality from the 9.5/10 1 and X.
>9.5/10 1 and X.
I mean, 8 out of 10 sounds pretty fucking good to me.
Judging by the fact that me, somebody who hasn’t touched a JRPG besides SMT and Pokémon wants it, it’ll prolly sell well
I only finished XI, but I've dipped my toes in most of the localized games. I'm currently playing VIII, but shit playing and beating XI really spoiled me. VIII is really slow.
>100+ posts
>still no veronica webms
Disappointing.
>9.5/10 1 and X
>and X
It makes Sandy meow.
Swapping is what really irks me for it,and it's that along with the merc missions tying up blades for hours at a time that's the real 'fuck you'.
The gatcha only starts to suck once you learn how good 4* blades can be with OP as fuck passives, and 4*'s tend to honestly be harder to roll then the fucking 5*'s...ironicly enough. 80 Hours into the game, the only rare blade I don't own from the gatcha is fucking Kos-Mos, but i've only obtained -2- 4*'s.
It -SUCKS-.
you get nothing faggot
It’s about as popular in America as pre world MH
Docked mode looks fucking awful. Objects appearing infront of your field of view is waaay more noticable but the port seems to work fantastically in handheld.
Super torn because I've been waiting for the switch version to decide if it was good enought to pass on the PC one. Some of the small changes seem really good but the graphics just can't compare other than handheld mode
Does progress in the demo transfer over?
Yes
Thank fuck
>took me less than 70 hours to finish this
I don't get it
I've never played any DQ game, and even with my love of JRPGs I never really felt the need to, but they really have been pushing XI and I've been thinking about giving it a shot.
Tell me, what makes this series so special?
The demo is massive, having to play it all over again when it releases would turn most people off. You get a small bonus if you played the demo first too, 3 seeds of skill, but you can grind for those late in the game
Will that still work if you plan on getting Physical
What makes it special is that it never gave up on the "oldschool RPG" cliches that a lot of other JRPGs abandoned to try and modernize themselves
XI feels like an old NES or SNES era RPG just scaled up to modern times with improvements, but not an overhaul of what makes it special.
It has a certain charm with the art style, it has really good storytelling in most games, etc.
Saves are stored on the system itself, so it doesn't matter if you play physical or digital
>"oldschool RPG" cliches that a lot of other JRPGs abandoned
mostly because DQ invented 90% of those cliches
My two main complains about DQ are the terrible music and the massive overuse of onomatopoeia from everything from spell names to elements. Why is it woosh element? It bugs me.
It’s mostly weaponised Japanese autism, there’s nothing “special” about current DQ besides it being literally the same game for decades.
You see the name Dragon Quest and you know exactly what the game is, it’s basically impossible to disappoint the fans because they just want the same thing with a new story and prettier graphics (or literally the same graphics, given a major draw of the switch version is a 16bit 2D mode).
You get used to the spell names, I like them
I like how towns and things have puns as their names, it's charming
On paper I get that. But here's the thing, it wasn't just the mechanics that made NES/SNES special, but also the characters and story, more so on the SNES side of things, but I digress
But from what I understand is most DQ plots are about as simple and straightforward as you can get for any kind of RPG "bad guy/evil force wants to do bad thing and hero has to stop them".
Granted most stories can be summed up that way, but I feel DQ almost prides itself with that.
Is there anything notable about the writing or characters?
>But from what I understand is most DQ plots are about as simple and straightforward as you can get for any kind of RPG "bad guy/evil force wants to do bad thing and hero has to stop them".
You will be pleasantly surprised then
They may all follow a "generic" setup like that, but the actual writing and characters and situations you'll find yourself in are TOP NOTCH
Do not let the simple look fool you, it tells a deep and good story with well done characters and moments that will really hit you
did you play it on the PlayStation or emulated and did you follow a guide
For now I'll take your word for it. Simple doesn't always have to be "bad" and can lead to interesting situations.
So I'll keep this in mind.
The best DQ entries are at least on par with Chrono Trigger in terms of character and story, and exceed most Final Fantasy entries
So I've heard, that's kinda been keeping me away for the most part. But I willing to venture to it sometime
>playing DQ2
good luck user...
It's only simple at the beginning anyway. These games always have some kind of major twist where they really take off
Mind telling me them then?
My favorites are V, VIII, and XI but you'll get mixed answers from other people
A lot of people really like IV too
the game runs surprisingly well in portable mode, although you can see that the resolution is kinda low
dqxi definitely took me by surprise at a number of points despite a very simple overall story. The characters are very charming, in fact the whole game oozes with this simple focused feel-good charm. It's not afraid to go dark or tragic at points though.
The puns are charming the onomatopoeia isn't. For me at least. And I have to mute the music immediately when I boot one up.
>when you finally return to Cobblestone for the first time and see what those bastards did
Played a bit of the demo, it looked acceptable for Switch. I wish it had the 2D mode but it doesn’t. I like the small changes, but, having played 250+ hours of DQ XI on PS4, they don’t seem to justify a $60 purchase, unless you haven’t played it before at all.
Played it and beat it when it came out on PS4 but I'm glad you Switch friends are going to get to enjoy the game.
The only thing I could never adjust to in XI is the protag's bright green fucking boots
I used a guide and played the 3ds version and beat it in like 115 hours
GTAV is normie
Fortnite is normie
DQ is not
I enjoyed IX
those ads about playing dress up got me
Yes I also enjoy TF2
Reminder that nintendo is giving all DLC of this game for free to westerners while Japanese people need to pay up to $40 for it
I played the demo for a while, it's alright but kind of bland. I don't see the fun in a JRPG where there's no difficulty of any kind, but the plot is also filler and the environments are just standard fantasy. Not trying to flame, there's just little here to draw you in outside of the hype.
justice for hiroshima
Well Reggie loves DQ, I remember he showed his file of IX and it had so much play time
>gacha
That is the it thing keeping me from getting XC2
No way we're getting EVERYTHING for free. What about the drama cd-like thing?
Did you not set the draconic options on?
Press X during the name entry screen and turn on strong monsters, otherwise game its a joke
>the plot is also filler
Jesus you are retarded
Can I change the name of my guy at any point? Originally I thought, it's the demo who cares but now with how long it is and with the save transfer I don't think I can handle 100 hours of people calling me Herbert
So is the demo a good way to spend my weekend while I'm housesitting? It's that kind of length?
This is fucking sad lmao
We’ve been playing this for months, if it almost a year
But “lol first time Nintendo guy here haha this is a fun new game lol!”
What a fucking embarrassment
It’s like playing Spyro for the first time a few months ago
Jesus Christ get your shit together nintendorks
Did you play in draconian mode?
>Game is releasing on a stupidly popular platform
>2 months after Hero got into Smash
>Pokemon shat the bed unprecedentedly hard, causing at least some of its fanbase to look at DQXI as an alternative JRPG fix
>THEY'RE ACTUALLY ADVERTISING THE GAME
The stars are aligning, this could be our moment bros.
That will be up in youtube with subtitles and I doubt it will be that great
Other than that yes you are even getting the wolf Eric costume that in Japan we still dont even know how we are going to get, might be a vump exclusive code
>but the plot is also filler
what did he mean by this?
The demo is quite long yes, it's about 10 hours
Has anyone else noticed that pushing DQ in the West has kind of been a NoA Pet Project for a while now? Like they are obviously going hard with XI S, but they've been doing it for a while now.
No
They need to do a Megaman-style "collection" and bring the older games to modern platforms
as of now people are stuck with Mobile or finding an old physical DS copy
Sorry Herbert, but you are stuck with it
there's been talk of remaking 9 for the Switch, mostly because all of that (pretty great) DLC content is gone forever unless you use a third party save file editor
No, there is a fan server up you can connect to and get all the DLC
FFFUUUUUUUUU
time to restart then
You can't change it, but Herbert is honestly a fine name within the context of the game. It sounds like a name somebody in the XI world would have.
Turn on strong monsters if you didnt the first time
what does lying villagers do
I've played I-V and I'm working on VI currently.
VI is probably my least favorite so far, but it has its moments.
stronger monsters, always stronger monsters
Game is waaaaay too easy otherwise
This
I didn't even grind much or worry about equipment or even BASIC STRATEGY and was able to breeze through normal mode
Stronger Monsters is essential unless you really just want to sit back and watch the game play itself
Also fuck Vince
The gacha isn't THAT bad, you get plenty of rare blades in the story alone and can overdrive a few in your first playthrough if you really want the gacha ones you managed to get on a specific character. The problem is everything else the system brings. Also, there's a high chance you won't use any rares you get late game if you don't want to grind trust and affinity charts. I don't mind it because I have grinding autism, but the merc mission and field obstacles rely too much on gacha luck, and you need to constantly go on menus to check affinity progress and switch shitty filler blades.
At the end of the day, the gacha is the reason behind all the problems. All of this could be solved if the amount of rares you got was fixed from the start, no need to get lucky with a blade+driver combo, and no need to give shitty blades a reason to exist which means no constant switching and no need to send them out on missions
The DQ8 music + ride pack will most likely be paid, but everything else is free
Pokemon was shitting the bed since the 3DS days.
XC2 is the best JRPG in a looong time. Kino music, exploration and art style. OCD autists aren't real people and aren't qualified to complain about gatcha.
I don't know where people are getting this 10 hour length from, I beat it in 6 hours with only a little grind. You could beat it in less than 5 hours easily if you know what you're doing.
Demo ends shortly after recruiting Veronica and Serena
It's a free download.
Its all free dude
Nintendo is footing the bill
Only Japan has to pay
It's fun to take your time and look around
That bad eh? I just finished the first dungeon and really don't want to sit through that shit again. Is harder monsters about comparable to DQ8 difficulty? That one is freshest in my mind.
>OCD autists aren't real people and aren't qualified to complain about gatcha.
I'm an OCD autist and I 100%'d Xenoblade 2 wtf
>That bad eh?
In my experience, yes
I had to stop grinding entirely just to get behind the curve so I could have a little fun thinking I might at LEAST be in danger
It's a little harder. Also you can skip cutscenes if you haven't noticed.
harder monster is comparable to regular DQ difficulty so yeah
They just made 11 base game really easy and later rectified with stronger monsters which was a draconican mode not available in the original JP release of the game
What don't you like about 6? Everybody seems to hate it but it's one of my favs, especially after 7 left such a bad taste in my mouth
TEAM ROCKETS BLASTING OFF AGAINNNNNNNNNN
Only the costume is free, you can download it from the eShop right now, no music in sight
No it's not.
Speed is everything.
The game presents as lighthearted, with silly enemies and a sunny outlook. You think you're going in as the mighty hero out to defeat the evil demon lord and save the day and that's as complicated as the plot will get, and maybe for the first couple of games in the series on the NES, that's true.
But then you get to 3 and onward, and you dig a little, and the game one-two punches you with dark plot beats and twists you would not have seen coming.
The protagonist undergoes terrible losses. Story threads involve people suffering and dying and betraying one another. This cutesy cartoony game is suddenly not so innocent.
On top of that the party characters tend to be really well written and believable, and you find yourself deeply caring about them by the midway point of the game.
DQ may have simple battles and the plot may seem simple from the outset, but there's more here if you look for it.
>remaking 9 for the Switch,
They're working on 12
>Pokemon shat the bed unprecedentedly hard
It's still going to sell gangbusters and that's coming from someone who hasn't played the games since Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. I do find it funny though how people are only now really getting pissed at GameFreak when Pokemon has been getting a free pass for its laziness for years now.
Yeah, but this is the first time that it shit the bed hard enough to actually get a decent amount of people to complain about it and seek out alternatives.
The music and the costume are one and the same thing
>But from what I understand is most DQ plots are about as simple and straightforward as you can get for any kind of RPG "bad guy/evil force wants to do bad thing and hero has to stop them".
You can water down any JRPG to this. Final Fantasy, Mana, Chrono, Star Ocean, whatever. What makes Dragon Quest stand out is the journey is more important than the destination. In Final Fantasy and most other JRPGs, the destination is the focus and the journey is just filler between those destinations.
Story in Dragon Quest is delivered mostly by exploration. Talking to every NPC and piecing together what's going on. Rather than arriving at a glowing NPC with an [!] over their head, who proceeds to explain the story to you in 30 minutes of cutscenes. This may not sound like that big of a deal, but it feels far more interactive and gets you to remember the characters more. And that's the key. In Dragon Quest, characters are the focus. Not plot. The games are split into story arcs where you're mostly helping characters solve a problem. The actual "plot" about finding some evil monster or stopping the world destruction is like 10% of the game. The other 90% is you interacting and helping characters across the world. Like Suikoden or Chrono games.
And when it comes to these story arcs, they can range from hilariously cheesy to downright heart-wrenching sad. Some of the stuff that happens in some Dragon Quest games like III, V, VII and VIII are far more sad than any Final Fantasy game. And it is because of the hours you spend getting to know the characters before the impacting event happens.
Light is best name since he is the Luminary
How? I'm on the pc. Is that a Switch feature?
Ah fuck. Guess I'll restart.
I see.
Who the fuck thought her voice acting was fine enough to be put in the game?
>No it's not
I like doing it, lots of people like exploring and looking around and taking in the sights
If you don't, that's fine
I *was* really enjoying it up until you defeat Murdaw for the first time. Then the game sets you loose on an open-ended adventure with very little guidance and the story progression comes grinding to a halt. You spend the rest of the game wandering from place to place trying to figure out what to do next, which some people may like, but I'm not the biggest fan of.
That said I don't hate it. The party characters are charming and some of the episodic adventures you get up to after Murdaw's defeat are very interesting. I guess I just wish it was more cohesive.
Does this get more fun later? It's too easy and the combat is boring. Is there like a hard mode I can do?
I don't think so, the download is only 20mb and there's no mention of the music and ridable tiger anywhere. I'll be happy to be priven wrong, but I'm not getting my hopes up
Yes you missed the hard mode toggle in the name entry screen.
The demo convinced me to not cancel my pre-order. The game looks like blurry dogshit in handheld, but thankfully it looks much better docked. Performance has been steady throughout, even running around Heliodor fountain. The other problem spot, the corridor to Gondolia, is not accessible in the demo, but I'm confident the new tweaked engine can handle it.
Yes, you can turn on harder monsters when you start a new game and there's other limitations like you can't buy shit from shops or you can't equip armor.
Harder monsters is enough by itself though, that gives the game SMT-tier difficulty.
No it's just Snoyfags having shit taste
Restart and turn on harder monsters. But prepare yourself since that mode is actually hard.
some people are saying to set the draconian things.
Does anyone have any recommendations for which ones though? I already heard to set harder enemies, but some things like no buying items just seems like you're outright getting rid of features in the game, and I can already decide for myself whether or not I want to buy items.
Ten hours if you don't skip any of the dialogue and if you take your time exploring and finding everything there is to find, which if it's your first playthrough you'll probably do.
All you need is harder enemies, the rest are a bit too much
Is PC port any good? I'm not buying a console anytime soon.
I have no idea. I played with the voices off.
Shypox and lying NPCs are fun at first but they can get really fucking annoying later.
harder monsters + no exp from weaker monsters are the ones to go for IMO
Hard monsters is hard enough. I died like 4 times in the opening area losing half and hour of progress in total. You'll have to save often and use items every now and then which I usually never do in JRPGs.
From what I heard deliberately grinding is what makes the game too easy and you can get a decent challenge by staying underleveled which sounds much better than having a hard mode you need to grind in.
I dont know if Yea Forums knows this already but if you turn on the dacronian setting of "when hero is KO the game is over" the game actually gives you a game over instead of restoring you to a church with half money, this is the first time the DQ series has ever had a game over state
And its great
Yeah, PC is fine
None of the XI S extras are THAT essential
plus you can mod in the orchestral soundtrack if you don't like the MIDI
I personally like the freedom you have in the game after Murdaw, it feels like you're having your own adventure.
Also yeah, the characters. I haven't played enough DQ games to be an authority on it, but I love them in 6, and it feels like there was a ton of care in fleshing out the party dialogue. After almost literally any npc encounter, all of your party members will have something unique to say. You can talk to a fucking cat and Milly will comment on how cute it is. Some dude digging a hole? Another party member will say "I bet I could outdig him." They feel so real, unlike in 7 where you get hardly anything like that, and most of the party conversation is just on the overworld with characters telling you where to go in their own flavor.
That's what sells DQ6 for me. Plus the monster catching mechanic is cool
Being underleveled also means you don't unlock skills as quickly and skills can increase your damage output tenfold. It's also one of the fun aspects of the game. So, I wouldn't recommend your strategy unless you just want to breeze through the story (which you can always do if you decide to turn off hard mode).
> After almost literally any npc encounter, all of your party members will have something unique to say. You can talk to a fucking cat and Milly will comment on how cute it is. Some dude digging a hole? Another party member will say "I bet I could outdig him."
V was like this too, when you're travelling with the kids they comment on LITERALLY everything if you ask for their opinion
Madchen can't stand drunks
Parry thinks you're just the coolest
Spider-Man has 50 years of heavy marketing, hundreds of comic books and a dozen high budget movies behind it. Dragon Quest keeps getting ignored by its parent company and only gets supported by Nintendo once a decade.
Damn, I need to play 5 next.
So are there any differences between the orchestral music in the PC mod vs the orchestral music on the Switch version? Like, does the Switch version have any songs that aren't in the PC mod and are there songs that remain midi on PC?
Is 7's party chat really that lacking? What you're describing is a standard feature from DQ4 onward - all the characters should comment on literally every fucking thing and it gives them a ton of character.
Granted DQ4 only had this in the mobile version, but still.
Its only standard in the DS remakes
7 was the first game to implement it chronologically and yeah its not that great
In 8 its just ask your party where to go next they do not react to specific NPCS
9 had none
11 is the same as 8
Granted it isn't my first time playing DQXI, however I didn't skip dialog/cutscenes and made it an effort to explore as many nooks and crannies for materials, NPCs, quests, and chests.
It's really not 10 hours of demo unless you're Vinesauce and spend a full hour grinding before reaching Heliodor for the first time
It's my favorite in the series, for a number of reasons
Out of all the protags who just can't catch a break, V is the one who is truly cursed
Sancho, the wives, Pankraz, Ladja, it's just great
It also helps that it's not actually too long, it's paced perfectly
can't forget my bois Harry and Tuppence either
and the MVP who will always be the tru legendary hero in my heart, SLIME KNIGHT
>It's really not 10 hours of demo unless you're Vinesauce and spend a full hour grinding before reaching Heliodor for the first time
He was doing that thing where he does where he goes on autopilot and talks about something else while playing. I have no idea why he ran around killing random enemies for as long as he did.
He even died once because he wasn't paying attention and forgot to heal.
Serena > Jade
How are the load times and battle transition times? I've played this on PS4 although I'm tempted to buy it again to play on the go.
Even just being in the same Inn room that you and Pankraz once stayed in elicits a reaction from Parry
he just thinks it's awesome that he's in the same room you and grandpa once stayed in, for whatever reason
>when Madchen - the girl who loves nearly all monsters - says she HATES Ladja
Dragon Quest VI could have been better if the characters got better story arcs. Having lots of party chat is good. But the characters still need some connection to the story. And really only Barbara matters in the story. She gets two story arcs and an impacting ending.
Milly gets a full arc, with Terry latching onto her arc way late, so I guess she's okay too. Carver just finds his parents and it's just an afterthought. The Hero is just along for the ride and doesn't have much connection to anything (kinda gets screwed in the ending as well). Amos is a fun joke character, but doesn't have an arc. And I'm not sure Nevan even exists.
Aside from this, the dual world mechanic is really annoying. But that's just my opinion. I've never really been a fan of it in any game that did it. Even Zelda and Metroid. But I see similar complaints almost any time DQVI is mentioned. So other people must not like it.
If they had fixed these two things in the remake, probably would have been a great game. But they didn't.
Huh. That's disappointing.
It's really that lacking. It was such a letdown coming from 6. I only finished 7 out of spite and to get another notch in the DQ belt. I have 8 on the 3DS I'm gonna start up next, I really hope it's not like 7 since it's so praised.
>dying in Dragon Quest XI
Pull that mans streaming credentials.
Well 6 on snes didnt have party chat, just keep that in mind
How about the gamexplain dude who spent 5 minutes in the 3D/2D selection mode at the start but never read the 2 lines of text that says the demo only has 3D mode.
In normal "easy" mode too
He needs to reset and set those dacronian options
He even skipped the intro
Sometimes I fucking hate Vinny
am I remembering wrong, or did DQXI have a first person mode on PC? I know DQVIII had it.
It does on PC yeah, I go into first person mode all the time just to look at dumb shit like what kind of food people are eating
replaced with photo mode
that makes more sense then, thanks
>Select draconian trial that makes npcs tell lies
>Skip the text every time by accidentally touching the left stick
I don't remember this being an issue on pc
It feels like Hero, Carver, Barbara/Ashlynn and Milly are the only characters that matter and even then Carver barely matters and Hero's story arc is unexpectedly short. But that's not that big an issue really - in DQ4 the Hero is a one-note character who doesn't get much of an arc too.
I did not much like the dual world mechanic either, it's just confusing because the game does not make it obvious which world you're in. They don't look much different except the landmasses are arranged differently, and there's no hud element anywhere that says "Dream world" or "real world," you just have to figure out which is which.
You get used to it by the time you have the flying bed and the boat and such, but it really could have been handled better.
>Serena as a titty monster
cursed image
I tell what world Im in by the overworld music
Which game is this cutie from?
That's stupid, I'd much rather have FPS mode than autorun on left click.
It's the sage from DQ3. Serena gets a sage costume in DQ11.
Shortly after Veronica and Serena officially join your party.
Pissed me off when he blew all that time brainlessly grinding just to save & quit right before meeting Erik
It's not his job to sell the game to people but fuck he didn't do the game any favors for anyone watching
>New photo mode
>can't zoom in
trash.
>When a JRPG's demo is longer than most artsy-fartsy indies and cinematic movie "games"
>I played with voices off.
Patrician choice, best way to play DQ
Playing the games with voice acting just feels wrong
I think the english dub is mostly pretty good and fits the setting.
This shits gonna sell 3 million copies.
>Dragon Quest VI could have been better if the characters got better story arcs
Fair enough, but why then is 7 so beloved? Maribel gets no arc, Ruff has no arc, Melvin/Mervyn is just doing his job and peaces out at the end. Kiefer is the only one who does get one and it's admittedly good, but still. I personally enjoyed the two world mechanic far more than the vignette mini maps of 7
At least turn on Stronger Enemies and Reduced EXP if you don't want the game to be a complete cakewalk. Also Townsfolk Talk Tripe is worth looking into for fun.
Octopath demo convinced me not to buy the game. I don't know if it's just the thief story that's brain dead and boring, but I wasn't about to spend another 3 hours of my life finding out.
He'll probably play it on stream again at some point when he's made some progress and has figured out the game a little better.
It's just ironic to me, I think, that he's only just now getting into DQ after Nintendo shilled it to him with Smash. His all-time favorite game, Chrono Trigger, has Toriyama character designs and was mostly written by Yuji Horii. It's a Dragon Quest game in all but name.
Thanks, curiously DQ3 is the next one I'm going to play
Also, nice. Hope there's a lot of costumes in 11, 8 was kinda disappointing
I'll wait for the release to play it entirely in wd since I already finished it on my
S4, but I mostly want to download the demo to support the release and the get special spirit in smash.
Do I have to beat the demo to get the spirit or just having a save file is enough?
The only time I died in Dragon Quest XI on the PS4 was when I was at the final castle. And it's because I was too lazy to evac out of there and get some healing before going into the final area. I'm going to play Dracovian mode because the base game is that easy.
First-person view was removed in favor of the Photo Mode it seems. Which is a shame.
XI has outstanding music.
It also does not try to make classic JRPG turn based system "more engaging" like most horrible games did.
Also, instead random encounters monsters randomly walk around the overmap.
That's about it.
Each character has a handful. The new DLC coming with the Switch version adds a few more.
Could you move around in first person mode?
The 3ds version cuts out a lot of little things that pad the time.
Herbert sounds like a legit name in that world so you did far better than me.
It'll sell really well on the Switch I'd imagine. And let's not forget all the PS4-owning weebs who will also be buying it.
Character becomes too embarrassed to talk to NPCs at times, and in combat it causes you to lose a turn every once in a while as well as sometimes be immune to status effects.
He clearly only likes Chrono Trigger because of TIME TRAVEL and that he grew up with it though. Hell he only likes FFIX because of Vivi and the overall DEATH themes.
3, 4, 5, 8, and 11 are the favorites in the series for a majority of fans.
I beat act 1 and 2 in 45 hours my first time and I wasn’t even really rushing. I loved the game but I didn’t bother going more than 5 hours into the 3rd act because you know why
I'll get the pc version when it's on sale. For now I can't really afford a $60 purchase on my budget and my specs are only enough just to get it to play 1080p/60fps.
The embarrassment stuff is shypox right? What's the difference between shypox and super shypox? I turned on the townsfolk telling fibs since it's just funny fluff.
Sounds like you'll enjoy Stronger Enemies and Reduced EXP from Easy Fights. Also maybe consider No Shopping so you'll have to seek out recipes for gear and strategize which is best for which situations.
Draconian Quests. You are able to choose them in the name select screen by pressing X.
Looking at all the enemy variety I really have to wonder why the game got so few spirits with the fighter pass, it actually has less than persona got.
Harder Enemies + Reduced EXP are the go-to if you want to make the game challenging. You can go even further with No Shopping forcing you to craft all your gear from recipes you find in chests and bookcases and Shypox causing the Hero to occasionally lose a turn in battle.
Is that counting the evolved spirits too?
I'm going to try DQXI with the Japanese voices, since I already played the whole PS4 game with voices off. And because every voice actor they picked except Jade is who I imagined in my head while playing with the voices off. It's actually eerie how they picked nearly every seiyuu I expected. Though it shouldn't be that freaky since they were picked because they commonly play those character tropes in anime/games.
When it comes to English voices, it's not just that I think they're bad. I could even say a few of them are good. Yangus in Dragon Quest VIII is an actual good voice actor and I can see why people like him. I liked him. But it's a Japanese game based on shounen anime. British dialects don't fit at all. Yangus is pulling Naruto reaction faces, yet saying "Cor Blimey!" It just...doesn't work. In the original Japanese, he just makes the reaction face and says nothing. Because the reaction is all the context that is needed, if you're used to Japanese games/anime. But beyond Yangus, so many of the secondary and NPC characters were HORRIBLE. I can't listen to a dub when it has one good voice actor, a handful of passable ones and fifty really REALLY bad ones. Especially when Trode and Medea, the main plot characters, are some of the worst.
The English voices in Dragon Quest XI might be good. But I watched the trailer and heard forced British accents. So that's it. I wasn't going to play with voices at all. Stereotypical English accents don't work in an anime game. Sorry.
This desu. Dragon Quest is a failure in marketing and the worst luck due to Enix America.
>None of the XI S extras are THAT essential
>Lots more story telling for party members and story fleshing out
>not essential
The setting is more british than anything though. If it was set in a japanese setting that would be different. Personally I just turn voices off most of the time.
Only played the switch demo but battle transitions are quick, not sure what to compare load times to but they seem fine nothing like dbq2
The difference between Shypox and Super Shypox is that Shypox only affects the Hero in combat and causes him to randomly lose turns while Super Shypox affects everyone else in the party in the same way.
>But it's a Japanese game based on shounen anime. British dialects don't fit at all.
>Stereotypical English accents don't work in an anime game. Sorry.
I couldn't disagree with you more and I feel like Japanese voices are horribly out of place in a european-style fantasy setting, but you do you.
That's fine then I thought it might end up a lot slower.
Read that as "after shorty and Serena join your party".
Veronica is definitely smol
FFIX is not good. I'm trying to play it right now. I do not understand FF fans.
>only 26 sidequests
Pathetic.
Beautifully detailed towns to explore filled with charming characters, quests and dialogue. Also lots lots more, that’s just prob my fav aspect.
I was willing to give it a chance after hearing such high praise for it but watching the streams put me off on touching it. The pacing seems awful and endless
>Reduced EXP
No way, strong monsters alone is more than enough. Reduced XP just makes the game less fun because you won't be unlocking skills as fast as you want.
I was trying it with my uncle because he's a huge FF head but I cant get into it. DQ is just so much better.
>Only 26 sidequests
>Cutscenes every 5 minutes
>Waifushit romance and marriage
>Voice acting
>Piss easy combat
Dragon Quest is dead. Can't believe I've waited for this piece of shit.
squeenix is autistic
I don't know why he likes it so much. It is by far the worst paced game in the series, it railroads you the whole way with long, droning dialogue segments and cutscenes, and it has a horribly slow battle system even compared to FF7 and 8 on the same system.
It's boring to watch but god if it isn't boring to play, too.
>Waifushit romance and marriage
Picked up
Yes. The Demo might be missing some menu options, so it's not confirmed it's entirely removed. I can't find the menu option to remember the last used attack.
The setting is the idealized Japanese view of what Renaissance Europe was. It's not really British at all. If anything, the basic design of the games is closer to Italy or France than Britain. Meaning how the reused characters and basic buildings look. And that's not counting the various locations they go to. Like in DQXI, the cities look based on Venice, Portugal, France, Germany, Japan, Tibet, Indonesia, etc. Not to mention the high fantasy style locations that aren't equivalent to anything in Europe. They try to add some quirks to the language in each of these places to set them apart. But it just isn't necessary. The original Japanese text (and their voices) don't bother with it. And that simplification actually makes things better in my opinion.
I'm sure other people love some crazy Italian or Portuguese dialect thrown in, but I find it unnecessary. And if you really think about it too much, it isn't consistent. Sylvando should have a thick Portuguese dialect given where he's from, yet they make him speak without a dialect because it would spoil a huge part of the game. Same with Erik. And why doesn't Rab and Hero have some stereotypical German dialect when their land is modeled off Germany in design? If you're going to argue that the dialects add flavor to the world because they make characters identifiable to their region, those dialects would have to remain consistent. And they don't. The Japanese just don't bother with it, which actually makes more sense. Especially when everyone in the world is in contact with each other. So they would likely lose regional dialects over time. The regional dialects in a fictional world also wouldn't directly correlate to those on Earth.
do those ghostlike blobs do anything?
>3, 4, 5, 8, and 11 are the favorites in the series for a majority of fans.
>3,4,5,8,11 have the most porn
seems legit.
If you want to get into Final Fantasy, try FF6. It's the point where the series was trying to get more story heavy but was also still firmly rooted in traditional JRPG gameplay. It has excellent characters and great gameplay, and unlike the PS1 games, isn't chock full of cinematics and endless dialogue segments.
When you finish it, depending on what you liked about it, you can go forward or back in the series to get more of what you liked. Backward for stronger gameplay focus, forward for stronger story focus.
>Not trying to figure out optimal paths in your character's skill trees to get essential abilities while beating bosses on an even playing field level-wise
Rab is a chinaman, user
That's the one I tried, I need to download the fan patch because the gba music is really quite awful.
How do you connect to it?
More sidequests unlock as you progress through the story.
I got a fair way into DQVI and just could not figure out where to go next. And this was after I had completed 4 and 5 on the DS. I think 6 coming out so much later hurt it for me.
In part 1. There are three parts.
I tried playing FFIX last year. It was the same as the other PS1 FF games. Fun disk 1, though mostly on rails with set events. Then literally fell asleep during the hours and hours of dialogue in Disk 2 and playing fake house with Eiko. Just quit the game there.
Most FFIX fans claim they love it for the "atmosphere" and "design." And then I get confused, because if they love the cartoony designs so much, why do they pass on Dragon Quest when it does the same thing? Dragon Quest also has more exploration and better gameplay than FFIX does.
will i like this game if i like hero in smash? ive never thought of myself as a JRPG person
I ended up using a guide. The game becomes *really* hands off once you beat Murdaw, and you are expected to kinda just wander around and explore and find the content on your own.
>braindead cumbrian weebcels ruin another great Japanese series
I'm done. Fuck this place and fuck you retarded weebs.
Rare nice mindset.
Which makes no sense when hes The retired monarch of a German style city. What makes more sense is that Japanese developers don't care about real world consistency and just design locations/characters based on their interests in how they look. All the more evidence that trying to add regional dialects to locations won't work.
Try the demo, it's a sizeable portion of the game for free.
Listen, nigger, I know what the optimal moves are, and it'll still take forever to unlock them with the +2/3 SP you get per level up. You don't get decent gains until the end of act 1 levelwise. I think I barely unlocked Victimiser and shadowclone on Erik at level 35 on the pc version, and that's WITHOUT dual wield. Imagine an entire first arc where Erik doesn't fill any niche. Arc 3 will blow your asshole wide open if you feel the first two were too easy, which they're not, even with some grinding.
There are way more than 26 side quests what the fuck are you talking about. There is literally an achievement for completing 40.
Only one way to find out. Play the game. What I can tell you is that you'll like the various versions of Hero a lot more after playing their games. Especially VIII.
More side quests get added each arc, initially the menu only shows the 26 available in the first arc.
Actually, it's 1 = 9/10, X = 8/10 (7/10 if you watch the post-credit scene) and 2 = 8.5/10
>Eight with any girl that’s not Jessica
Shit image 0/10 delete this now
>Plays with a setting made to limit your options and have you strategize around said limitation
>WTF why can't I use the best abilities for my characters sooner!?
Why are you playing on hard mode to begin with user?
>Only 26 sidequests
Wrong
>Cutscenes every 5 minutes
At the beginning of the game, yes. It was annoying to me at first as well. The cutscenes get less and less the farther you go.
>Waifushit romance and marriage
Wrong. It has no bearing on the game. Dragon Quest V has the focus on marrying a girl. So your claim Dragon Quest XI "killed" the series when a game from 25 years ago did it just shows how you aren't a fan of the series.
>Voice acting
The original game had no voices. You can turn them off if you want authenticity.
>Piss easy combat
Turn hard mode on. Dragon Quest XI is both the easiest and hardest game in the series, depending on if you turn hard mode on.
FF is more character and action focused
They cant stand the Hero being mute
Canon
Its a free demo dude
Just make sure to turn hard monsters on by pressing X on the character name entry screen
>Why are you playing on hard mode to begin with user?
Because I have the restraint to grind only when I want to, so it's the perfect difficulty without the reduced xp trial.
FF is more story and plot focused. Not character focused. Dragon Quest is the character focused series.
I just used traditional camera on PC
There’s nothing wrong with it, and you probably won’t miss anything unless you compare it with the switch version, and the graphics will obviously be far better unless you have a literal toaster.
The music is kinda meh 2bh, it’s all the other stuff that is actually worth it.
God I hope so, if another option is missing it may be possible
Wow thanks didn’t know.
I just think generic european setting don't fit with japanese language. Just an opinion. If It was in Grorious nippon I wouldn't be using english.
The thief is lame, he’s the sasuke of the game basically. He’s also a thief in a jrpg, it’s a wonder he can actually steal anything. Not sure why it took you 3 hours to clear his chapter 1 though.
I think the ps4/pc version had a menu option to swap auto-run and fps mode on left stick click, and SE might have removed it for the demo so that people are incentivized to use the photo mode instead of going into first person and taking screenshots. The photo mode does pretty up the game.
He can steal stuff fine, but I only got a real use out of it in Act 2 since you can get some nice equipment to boost his chances of stealing. Also he's becomes the highest single damage dealer in the game in Act 2. Literally busted. With a little setup he can out damage everyone except Veronica using magic burst every turn and popping elfin elixirs.
Oh shit you were talking about Octopath. Ignore my post then.
I play in English if no honorifics are used in the dub or translation. Persona is unplayable to me in English because I can't stand hearing Yuri Lowenthal say "senpai"
Glad Im not the only one
I fucking hate when honorifics are left untranslated
>JUNPEI COON
>British
U wot m8
There is none, it is there only to placate westerners who think RPG combat needs to be 'dynamic' with movement and positionals. It does absolutely nothing. Switch to the classic camera.
I was about to type a tirade about why you're a faggot for not liking Erik, but then I followed the thread and backed down. On the topic of Octopath, you're right, Therion is an edgelord and his story is one of the weakest in the game. Good Sorcerer, though.
I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the Persona localizations. English speakers using japanese honorifics in english sentences is just awful.
European, whatever.
Step your game up, anons, the context was literally in the previous post
Classic Camera actually gives you more situational awareness because you see all the enemy moves being telegraphed. It's too easy to lose track of what the fuck is going on when enemies can phantom-kick you from the other side of the field.
>brits
>european
Might as well call arabs and indians asian
Yeah yeah I saw that after I posted. I saw thief in a DQ11 thread and thought Erik. Cut me some slack user.
A bunch of areas in the game are based on Asian locations. By your own logic, it makes no sense why the people in those locations have some form of English dialect. Except that they can't come up with any dialect for those areas. So they default to typical English. If over half the areas in the game just default to British dialects and ignore the regions unique aspect...why not just have the same dialect everywhere? It would be more consistent.
That's what the original Japanese game does. Every area just uses standard Japanese and doesn't worry about dialects. They add the flavor into the characters dialogue and expressions.
Fuck it, I will grind.
>inb4 that's because Switch has no games
BTW, party wiped out is game over. Not resurrection at church with half of your money gone. Thank God for autosave lol.
A lot of people do.
Yeah I don't really care. It feels more normal to have people in a western setting speaking English. I would have them speak with offensive asian accents in those towns if I could.
>The cutscenes get less and less the farther you go
Dropped. Hate when there's barely any story in a JRPG when the gameplay is pretty simple. That's also the reason why I dropped previous DQ games. Seems like SE can't write for shit. Both FF and DQ suffer from the same stuff like characters barely talking, story being all over the place when there's barely any cutscenes and so on.
>Might as well call arabs and indians asian
But we do, and so do continental Europeans. Can't risk the muzzies screaming about racism like the American blacks on top of religious intolerance. It's best not to give those savages another reason to riot.
>best not to give those savages another reason to riot
This begs the question: why are those savages in europe?
Does the party wipe trial lock the protag into your active battle party? There's no way of knowing with the demo, I suppose.
What is it with Japs and English accents?
They keep butting brits in and it sounds retarded, but in XC2 they have brits for people, mutts for blades, some aussies thrown in and it sounds fucking weird.
Now I start up the demo and I’m greeted with a girl who looks like a continental european village girl with the costume and the head veil, and she sounds like a british pub wench.
Gibs
pretty sure it makes the info npcs (pink dots on map) tell plausible lies to trip you up.
What accent would you suggest. English is their language after all.
>Dropped.
Good for you. Want a cookie?
The cutscenes get less because the amount of exploring and combat you do rises. Each location has the same amount of cutscenes more or less. But in the beginning of the game, you don't need to search for anything or fight anything. So you get a bunch of cutscenes back to back.
Probably.
>autosave
What a casual adn way to defeat the point of the draconian option
I doubt it but it doesnt matter since to wipe normally the hero would still have to die eventually
Progressives want votes and virtue signaling points.
>Want a cookie?
Yes.
>Each location has the same amount of cutscenes more or less.
Picked up back again.
Let’s be real, it isn’t. Not anymore.
Even Euros see standard American English as the default and various British accents as wacky variations on par with southern US or Australian accents.
Americans are the sole reason for the language’s relevancy, unless you consider causing USA to exist more relevant than what Americans themselves achieved.
>What a casual adn way to defeat the point of the draconian option
Ok, I turned it off. Or maybe I didn't. You will never know for certain.
Richard Honeywood made everyone have a British dialect in Dragon Quest VIII because he was "tired of American accents." The head of localization in SquareEnix of Japan loved it, so he demanded every DQ game going forward does the same. Plus Alpha (the localization team) didn't just stop with British though. They started throwing in French, Russian, Scottish, Australian and basically every other stereotypical accent you can think of. It resulted in the mess that is Dragon Quest IV DS. Possibly the worst localization in gaming history. Worse than All Your Base.
Because of the success of Dragon Quest VIII, SquareEnix also started using the British voices in other series like Final Fantasy and Mana. Dark Souls did it too. And Nintendo did it with Zelda. Basically, its become a trope now that any "fantasy" game has British voices, regardless of its setting or content. And now the idiot who added British because he was tired of American accents has created the same overuse with British voices. But he left SquareEnix and works at Blizzard now.
>Whole party will be wiped out if the Hero dies
This sounds downright obnoxious considering how many bosses have some combination of
>Attacks that deal heavy damage to the entire active party
>Desperate attacks, i.e. guaranteed crits
>The ability to attack multiple times per turn
>Possibly the worst localization in gaming history. Worse than All Your Base.
This is a hyperbole, right? I know it's not the best, and probably the worst DQ has gotten, but it's not "the worst" in gaming history.
>braindead cumbrian weebcels
If you are triggered by any of those things, I wonder what the fuck you were doing here in the first place and why did you think you were welcome here for even a second. In any case, bye and hope I never see you again anywere.
I appreciate the informed answer, user.
smash bros is basically a giant playable advertisement at this point
>Wonder how well this will sell
It needs to sell or DQ is staying in Japan for ever. 80% of the current sales are from Japan ffs.
Name some games that are worse. Stuff like All Your Base are bad just because they had a Japanese guy who didn't know English correctly just do a rough translation. Dragon Quest IV is poorly translated ON PURPOSE, changing huge swaths of text to make dialects work. It's a total rewrite of the game on such a level that it isn't the same game anymore. As well as removing 50% of the text in the game.
It was from the start. Nintendo execs didn't want to make it until Iwata and Sakurai came up with the idea of using mascot characters. Sakurai originally wanted to have unique characters.
Question: I turned on a dracoian quest, how do I get rid of the quest underway notification? It's annoying
>at this point
Somewhere in Misc menu.
get a load of this guy
ty user. I got it
Well if you put it in the context that it was done on purpose then I can see how you can come to that conclusion.
>As well as removing 50% of the text in the game.
Yeah not gonna defend that. Didn't they want to add that in and just didn't have the time? I remember reading something about this a while ago. Oh and they didnd't Plus Alpha just use the algorithm or program that the localizers used in Chrono Cross? Like all they have to do it type regular dialogue, put it though the program, and it will spit out some accent riddled stuff, right? I swear I saw a GDC or a slideshow about this years ago.
Can MC marry multiple girls? Cant decide between Gemma and Serena.
>Can MC marry multiple girls?
Uh, no user, you obviously have to choose
np
This isn't Fable, user.
Gemma was the only option before and they haven't given any more specific info about it now.
Can I marry the girls to each other?
>Basically, its become a trope now that any "fantasy" game has British voices, regardless of its setting or content. And now the idiot who added British because he was tired of American accents has created the same overuse with British voices
That's the norm for every medium where the intended audience is English speakers. Look at pretty much every movie set in the classical era, everyone in Gladiator and Troy spoke with an English accent. Look at Kingdom of Heaven, a movie about french warriors in the middle east, everyone spoke with an English accent. American audiences expect the accents in non-contemporary settings because English history is our history, or rather part of our past.
No, that's forbidden love
Nigger, why the fuck do you think Marth and Roy were in melee? Roy's game wasn't even out yet.
Your out of your fucking mind if you think any turn-based RPG is normie-tier. Normies think turn-based combat is "outdated".

The entire world loves Spiderman.

Can I marry them to my cock?
>350k estimated combined digital + physical sales in first month
>best selling western game
Is this true? That doesn’t sound very impressive at all.
>moving the goalposts
I moved nothing, you cited a cultural phenomenon with no comparable turn based game, and a niche title as proof of turn based games being liked by normalfags.
I wish there was option for not getting full hp and mp from level ups.
DQ11 is my favorite game of all time and holy shit I can't wait to give Square more money when it releases
Pathetic. I already pre-ordered it.
>Didn't they want to add that in and just didn't have the time? I remember reading something about this a while ago.
Never seen any official statement on that. But it's what people theorize. That it took them so much time to do the alterations they either ran out of time or patience to do it with all the party chat as well. But even if this is true, it's bullshit. Since they did it in DQV, VI and VII. Games with even more text. Laziness sounds like the primary reason in that case.
>Oh and they didnd't Plus Alpha just use the algorithm or program that the localizers used in Chrono Cross? Like all they have to do it type regular dialogue, put it though the program, and it will spit out some accent riddled stuff, right?
I didn't hear this either. However, it would account for why so much of the text comes out as unpolished junk that doesn't follow actual dialect rules. There actually are standards for writing dialects in novels and such. DQIV did not follow those. It basically wrote things out phonetically and made up their own rules.
Also they should let you disable camping completely.
>due to a cartoon.
Oh hell nah as someone that was 10 when pokemon gen 1 came out I didnt care for the anime and loved the games
So do party members follow in the field now? I’ve seen screenshots that imply they do, but I watched some demo gameplay and didn’t see it.
Fuck SE for not bringing the definitive edition content for pc and ps4

Im 100% sure minecraft sold better
nips love minecraft
It'll come later I'm sure.
I don't know, you sound pretty vain to me.
I'm at the church right after you escape with Erik and he's following me.
Oh, nice. I dunno why, but I like it when your party follows. It’s much better than just having the MC running around alone and the party only showing up in battle or cutscenes
Party following you around is great. The only time I ever thought I'd like it better without a party is P5. You're sneaking around but your party can be out in the open while you hide. It isn't any trouble, but it kind of breaks immersion of the already piss easy stealth aspect of the game.
>Look at pretty much every movie set in the classical era, everyone in Gladiator and Troy spoke with an English accent.
But they didn't. Especially in Gladiator, most of the cast has a pretty normal American accent. Lucius, Crassis, Maximus, Quintus, Gaius, Lucillia, etc. Gracchus, Marcus and Proximo speak in a British accent, but that's their normal accents. They just let all the actors speak their natural dialects, except Russell Crowe who was trying to hide his weird Aussie/Kiwi hybrid dialect back then for some reason forced himself to speak "American."
Troy and Kingdom of Heaven have similar shifting between different actors.
In any event, you are right that British being attached to certain time periods and fantasy settings has been a thing long before Dragon Quest. The first Dragon Warrior on NES did it. But I'm just saying that we got an explosion of British being used in video games around the time Final Fantasy XII/Dragon Quest VIII did it. And in SquareEnix's case, the localization director cited Dragon Quest VIII as the reason he focuses on it.
I’m really tempted to buy this again even though I already played through it last september. Fuck, I can’t believe I’m gonna drop another $60 on a game I already played
What's the level cap for the demo?
>Popular in spite of being turn based, due to a cartoon.
Gee, it's almost like a bunch of people first tried Dragon Quest because they recognize the art style from a cartoon called Dragon Ball. Almost like that was a benefit to the series...
>Sold like 2.5 million, bloodborne-tier popularity
Are you implying 2.5 million is bad? Dragon Quest VIII sold 1.5 million and is still considered one of the top 10 PS2 games. Same with Shadows of the Colossus, which sold near the same.
You're also avoiding the point that Pokemon is the best selling games and franchise of all time. And it's turn based. Not only that, it's so stuck in the past that it's below Dragon Quest V in innovation and gameplay. And the fans actually get mad whenever they try to change it.
There is none. But you can stop getting it if you turn on the exp restriction draconian setting.
>Fuck, I can’t believe I’m gonna drop another $60 on a game I already played
I only do it for Dragon Quest and Vanillaware games. Both because I love them, but also because I want to support future releases.
But also, most DQ games are so rare, you can resell the old one.
Oh. That's weird to not put a grind. People may sit and grind their ass off and be like 20+lvls overpowered before they start.
Yes party members follow you now
No, I don't know why. You should elaborate.
He is a faggot with shit taste Act 3 is the best part of the game
I'm thinking the place where the demo ends is intentional as Slayer of Sands is the first tough boss of the game.
More than Octopath, hopefully. What a travesty that game ended up being. Hoisted up by nothing more than pretty visuals and a barebones version of Bravely Default's combat.
They could. But that's kind of a drag. Grinding is for people who don't quite want to push themselves and test how far they can go.
Is Stronger Monster's actually worth playing on? I dropped the PS4 version in anticipation of the additional content on Switch, and I remember getting really frustrated with RNG being so prevalent. And I don't mean in regards to crit-chance; the coliseum arc was miserable for me since the party AI was incredibly random. It didn't feel responsive to present, actual battle conditions, and it would heal and attack at some of the worst moments.
Octopath is not that bad. IMO, it's better than Bravely games, but that is just my opinion. OST kicks ass, tho.
Bosses being complete bullshit is a DQ staple.
Yes, I dropped my second PC playthrough on stronger monsters when I learned of the switch version and didn't have any trouble even during Dora in Gray, which is one of the casual filters.
Some of these bosses still had me on edge sometimes even with hard enemies off though. Pic definitely related.
Yes, but like you mentioned when you have guests or less than a full party the game is heavily against you in terms of RNG on Stronger Enemies and this isn't taking into account any other Draconian Quests you may have active.
Party AI is basically a handicap that some Japanese players like because it harks back to the Famicom games. But also because it makes the game more challenging. Much like the Dracovian mode in XI allows you to put handicaps on. Thankfully, you can turn it off in normal play. But in that Arena, they wanted to have a throwback to Dragon Quest IV, where you can only control one character.
And her name is actually Arena.
>turn on Japanese dub
>script reads something like, "We 'ave to climb those craggy cliffs and reach the top of that mountain"
>VA orates "Let' s go"
It lacks far too much in charm for my tastes. The massive gaps between character interaction and story beats doesn't really do it for me. I was really excited for it, but I ended up getting bored about 20 hours in. A shame because I really wanted to like it.
I guess if you don't like it, that sucks for you, but I personally feel it adds a lot of character to english dialogue. Look up what "voice" is in literature. A dialect or manner of speech is a powerful tool in establishing that.
Bitches don't know about Hustle Dance.
I look forward to this shit so much, I wanna see how much they changed in localization.
>Party AI is basically a handicap that some Japanese players like because it harks back to the Famicom games
But the only Famicom DQ game that had party AI was 4. And that was notorious for one reason that I'm sure you know.
>TFW I never knew this existed until I keep getting shit on by the boss that nerfs your healing into the ground
This fight caught me by complete surprise. I didn't wipe, but I had like 2 or 3 people left alive in my entire party by the end. Was definitely the hardest fight in the game for me. Looking forward to it with harder monsters.
Yeah, it took me way too long to realize Sylvando's strengths as a combatant.
I want to play it but the shitty music turns me off completely. Any workaround?
The game DOES tell you the dialogue will vary between text and voice.
I think the only bosses I had issues with were the dragon in the hotto volcano, and the guy whose name I have forgot who you fight with just you and Hendrick.
Hustle Dance feels almost mandatory the more Draconian Quest options you play with. Easily makes him one of the best party members along with his buffs abd debuffs.
Will gatekeepers get off my ass for playing Hero in Smash if I play this demo?
Any fight with a non-party member character is hard to lose. Gramps carries you through that fight even if you're under leveled.
This guy? Yeah, wasn't expecting his cloning bullshit. Made the fight pretty annoying to handle with only two party members.
You should play it anyway.
You are not gonna like this suggestion, but... Try solo runs. Game becomes harder as you get new party members, so if you don't recruit it's not gonna be hard. Pick one and focus on his/hers story.
Of course, that won't help with other things you dislike.
>Look up what "voice" is in literature. A dialect or manner of speech is a powerful tool in establishing that.
That does exist. But citing novels isn't good because one of the big reasons Dragon Quest localizations are so bad is, they don't follow the rules for writing dialects, established by authors over centuries. There's actual rules authors like Mark Twain and Charles Dickens followed. Dragon Quest IV, V, IX and Joker just said "lol let's write things out phonetically and make shit up as we go! It'll be hilarious!"
The localization is just superfluous. I understand localized DQ has its own character, but it makes me wonder what some characters' personalities really are.
True, I never did consider doing it this way. I might just try it out when my backlog is freed up again.
Took me about 80 hours blind in the 3DS version for the final boss and 110 hours to do all the bonus postgame shit.
I went really hardcore completion on 11, on Hard mode + no EXP from low level monsters, and it took me about 130 hours but that was including forging everyone's best equipment and getting enough skill seeds to max out skill trees.
Just tell them to fuck off. Then play Dragon Quest XI anyway. Don't avoid a good game because Smash fags are bitter contrarians.
Yeah him, I just wasn't ready and I'd spent most of the game before him running from every single encounter. You can get through most fights with bad gear so long as you keep up buffs and keep healing but this guy was too much.
I want to fuck Roxy
Ah I was talking about the refight in Act 3. The first fight in Act 1 was a cakewalk.
Yeah I'm a DQ vet so I knew to rush to Hustle Dance as soon as I got Slyvando. It's so good in every DQ game it's in, and in 11 it's better than ever. Party wide healing that scales on style. Slyvando is really good.
Why would anyone give a shit if you're playing the objectively most fun character in the game with the widest variety of actions and therefore most diverse playstyle?
Bitches aint shit.
Regardless, play the demo.
Guys, I could only stomach it to the Kraken in DQVIII, but this one looks pretty good. Will I get burnt out again or is XI much better?
It's always crazy to think that EOPs are basically playing a completely different game because of all the "localisation" bullshit.
Actually had to use dark resist gear because he was doing so much damage and with only 2 party members one too many Shypox procs would result in death.
You fight a Kraken boss early in DQXI too that's reminiscent of DQVIII
It depends entirely on what you didn't like about VIII. XI is more linear and story focused than VIII was. Which is good for some people, bad for others. But considering you didn't play very far in VIII at all, and the early game is more linear, I'd say you probably wouldn't get far in XI either.
But the demo is also free, so you might as well try it.
Reminder that english voices are the original voices in this. If you use jap voices, you are retarded.
I mean, the same could be said for the Ace Attorney series as well, but the base story and conveyance of the story is still accurate, so any other dialogue changes don't really matter. And with DQ games feeling more western fantasy than not, I don't particularly mind it.
It's gonna be Oboro Muramasa all over again.
>voice actor grunts and says "Saa..."
>three sentences worth of "context" dialogue to explain what Saa means
I thought it was kinda boring, really. I was playing it a whole generation later which probably had something to do with it. But it didn't hook me like SMT does. I think I'll just try the demo, thanks user.
I think it's acceptable to use the japanese voices if you're playing the game a second time to see what the differences are.
But you should use english your first playthrough.
The fundamental nature of Dragon Quest never changes. If you don't like one, you probably won't like the others.
By your logic, anyone who plays the English version instead of the Japanese version with no voices is retarded. Because that's how the first version of the game was.
You don't want to be retarded, do you?
Writing things out phonetically and making it it's own "language" is also it's own thing, it's own "rule".
Don't constrain literature to such a degree. Go read Babel-17.
>Reminder that english voices are the original voices in this.
No, the original voices are no voices.
This was by far the hardest boss with stronger monsters on. Closely followed by mordegon phase 1 who is equal to overweening pride.
Yeah, I hope this version with it's draconic mode or whatever can help make the easier parts of the game somewhat challenging in a similar way.
>Literature
>Rules
The first thing you learn in creative writing is that everyone just does whatever the fuck they want, and getting caught up in writing "correctly" will only stifle you creatively.
>Writing things out phonetically and making it it's own "language" is also it's own thing, it's own "rule".
When people are making fictional dialects, sure. The localization teams intended goal was to infuse real world dialects into the game. Those real world dialects have rules. And they just threw the rules out.
If you're going to argue that this is a fictional world and therefore it doesn't have to follow real languages, then there's no point for them trying to have real world dialects in the first place. Either way, they fucked up.
All pre-VII DQ titles are short(er), so you might like them more. From VII onward games are longer and it takes some time to 'get things moving'.
Shorter in a relative sense. I'm 35 hours into DQ6 and I kinda figured it would be over by now, but it's still going.
The second thing you learn in creative writing is that, when you actually want to publish/sell your work, it's going to go through an editor. And that editor follows rules their publisher lays out for them. Some authors are able to really fight this system and get a book released without heavy editing. But few succeed.
When it comes to video game localizations, the whole point of a localization is to try and find a balance between keeping as much as the original writing intact as possible while changing what is necessary to work in the new language. Not to rewrite the whole fucking thing in your made up "voice." The translators aren't the original author. By changing the voice, they have changed the work.
Are you the same guy who was arguing about this yesterday?
How useful is Erik's steal command? Worth passing up stuff like sleep strike?
I think he is, yeah. And rather than repeat myself about how I think the localization is fine - if extreme - I'll say I'm just glad we get the games at all, no matter what Squeenix decides to do with its localizations.
you get a pep power from it, and its nice for getting materials / money later on, but its not too good early on, id say just go for the knife stuff, cobra strike + victimizer is great
Useful, but prioritize attacks first.
Yes. besides showing you that points of interest are nearby, they play a part in the story. The latter is not in the demo of course and don't spoil yourself.
It depends on whether Square follows up the renewed interest. Remember, DQVIII was pretty successful in the West, but then Square Enix stopped localizing the games and interest in the franchise died down again. If it wasn't for Nintendo, we wouldn't have even seen DQIX get released here. If they're smart, they'll put out Switch ports of the Erdrick Trilogy and the Zenithian Trilogy within the next year. If they stay silent on the franchise, interest will die down again.
I wasn't even on here yesterday. If someone else is bringing it up, then that shows how multiple people have a problem with it. Which is evident since it comes up in every thread. Even when I'm not the one who brings it up. In fact, I'm often not the person who brings it up. Like in this thread.
What ghosts? I think you're seeing things. Silly user!
>asking for localization teams to actually do a decent job
>you should be happy with whatever you get, no matter how bad it is!
>*sweaty man*
sugiyama is seething (probably)
The issue is that a "decent job" is completely subjective aside from whether or not it is translated properly.
Resetera is down the hall and to the left.
Is it worth getting for the switch if I beat it on PS4? The 2d version looks fun
Agreed. It also requires people to know the intention of the original author. And by their very nature, translations replace the original work. Unless you have a case like we're seeing now, where you can turn on Japanese voices while having the translated text on top. And as people in this thread have pointed out, there are such huge changes that even people who don't know Japanese can notice them. Veronica says something simple like "arigato" and the text writes out two sentences of Tsun dialogue. That's just a bonkers translation. It's full on adding context and meaning that wasn't in the original at all.
I named him Sonny, and as far as I'm concerned it's canon.
If you think these changes/additions are enough.
That's more common than you'd think. I was a huge fan of JRPGs growing up and I loved Chrono Trigger as well, but aside from DQVIII when it cam out and DQIX (which I didn't end up liking that much), I didn't play any of the games until very recently. The first Builders game got me to finally play DQ1, and Builders 2 and all this other buzz has me finally going through a bunch of them. It was just never part of the zeitgeist here.
Huh. Not that user but this is actually a lot of stuff added than I thought there'd be. This really is definitive in terms of content
There are tons and tons of people who play Mother, Chrono, Pokemon or Final Fantasy, all games directly inspired by Dragon Quest, but won't try Dragon Quest. Because they heard some negative thing about Dragon Quest or think the "art looks stupid." It's especially funny when you call out Chrono Trigger fans about that. It's like they tune out the Akira Toriyama/Yuji Horii influences completely.
Holy shit this makes the other versions irrelevant. The only thing they have going for them now is graphics.
