Yes for most games, no for MMOs. Those tend to make male characters quickly look like brick shithouses while the females get all the decent/cute/appealing armors.

For one, if somebody doesn't, it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Vast majority of the time yes I play male characters. I pretty much always play females in pokemon games though because the designs are always so cute and I never really care much for the male characters.

I sometimes play as a girl in games with character creators just for fun and to have a separation between myself and the character. Rather than the player being myself, it is an "original character" I'm controlling.
If the game doesn't have a main controllable character, like in Space Trading games, I often end up roleplaying as myself and fantasizing about being a space trucker. I find it really comfy to imagine listening to space radio while enjoying the stars.

If there was a game where you could create a custom Magical Girl and fight baddies like that, I'd totally play it if possible. Alas, that niche, like giant robots, are only for references...

In RPG games on my first playthroughs I always play as a guy. After completing it I might as well just play it again as a girl because I like some variety.
MMO's characters on the other hand I usually go like this: self insert character > going nuts with creating the second character > a new girl character which I don't even play as after a day or two because of my first two characters.
