some platforms give you DRM free copies of games, and you can copy those and back them up as much as you want whenever you want. So even if the store you got them from dies (which is a big if), you'll still have your games and be able to play them. This is generally how I prefer to get my games alternatively, I pirate what I want; there is little reason to resort to using steam and similar DRM clients unless you really need to for a certain feature.

A company will always want to sell a game for full price whenever they can. But the problem is that physical retail copies take up literal shelf space. In order to move product, literally move it, off store shelves, places like Gamestop or warehouses like Amazon will have to sell physical games at a discount at some point. That's an accepted part of retail. I.e why physical is superior to digital and why pc sucks should have never given up their physical games

Any industry only gets away with what it thinks it can get away with it is possible that all digital could happen on console but it's not like a natural inescapable evolutionary change that your framing the argument in, or that that's a good thing which it certainly isn't.

This would be a valid argument if it wasn't an industry-wide trend and we weren't seeing digital slowly overtake physical on consoles all over the world and continue to increase sales and break records YoY.
