I’ve never played a fire emblem game before. Is this a good one to start with? Or would awakening or three houses be a better choice?
Also, the game has three difficulty options, but it seems that tutorials are only available on “easy”. Should I start on Easy as a new player, or is it simple enough to figure out without tutorials?
This game is the easiest game of the series and the best start point. If you know absolutely nothing about the game's mechanics go easy.

Guy who's only played Sacred Stones and Fates Conquest here. Sacred Stones is apparently one of the only games that lets you grind your party, as opposed to having a set amount of enemies to fight. SS is pretty easy and you get some good units early on. Be sure to get Lute. Fates has a non-permadeath mode but honestly it breeds some really shitty habits (such as just tossing units at enemies without a thought and letting them die to get 0exp causing you to rely on a few units), and is the definition of a beginner's trap. I think Awakening has such a mode as well.
Aiden Perry
It's a fine starting point.

7 or 8 are probably the best ones to start with three houses is very different from most fire emblem games normal difficulty should be fine for your first time >which FE game is the best? the one you play first :^)
>This game is the easiest game of the series that hasn't been true since awakening, and three houses doubled down on being braindead easy
Nathan Gutierrez
the new game lets you rewind time to any move made like 14 times PER BATTLE. on top battalion and adjutants that just make everything way too easy, even on hard
Oliver Jones
So, you’d say the tutorials aren’t necessary?

someone who's never played played FE is going to get blasted with SS
>hurr use le seth xd

when i was a kid i used jagen to kill everything because i saw how fast he killed and thought he was the best. and then i hit a wall in the mid game where marth and jagen were the only good units and everybody else died and became a generic. thats how i learned my lesson
Cameron Bennett
honestly i'd recommend maybe playing the prologue on easy to see the basics, but normal difficulty is just more enjoyable since it's still not too hard to give you trouble

Either 8 or 9 (Path of Radiance) is the best starting point. 9 has an in-depth tutorial that will explain everything that is completely optional, but it will also go through everything at a basic level through natural progression. 7's tutorial is also fine but it's boring as shit, it almost turned me off the game entirely.

Do any of these games have an undo button? By which i mean, just one unit placement prior? All too often I've killed my momentum because i accidentally moved a unit in a bad place. I'm not looking to undo a unit death or anything
Xavier Nelson
the new one has this feature kind of, it is a total rewind to any point you want. if you dont want to feel abusive you can just use it to fix misclicks.
Luke Kelly
>Do any of these games have an undo button? you can use Rewind in retroarch :-^)
Jordan Parker
It's a fine place to start but more importantly if you're interested in getting into the fire emblem franchise the important thing to do is to avoid all contact with the fire emblem fanbase. It is pure cancer and you will lose enjoyment just being around them.
Logan Thomas
I dont use retroarch.
Total rewind seems a little extreme.
Dominic Watson
that was my first one and i fucking loved it and the rest of the series, go ahead and start with it. the only difference between normal and easy is easy has the tutorial, so it's kinda up to you.

7 is ostensibly better as a starting FE solely due to the fact that it's literally designed to be westerner's first FE. 8 is still a fine place to begin, it's got a tight cast, good music, it's relatively short for the main campaign while also not being too difficult.
The early game maps in SS are really easy anyway even on hard so you might as well go for easy for the tutorials. FE8 is one of the easiest games in the franchise though. You can pretty freely grind and your early pre-premote Seth is by far one of the strongest units in the entire franchise being able to practically solo the game if you even somewhat knowledgeable. It's a fine starting point though. The GBA mechanics are easy to grasp, I would just read up on weapon weight and it's relation to the CON stat and how double attacks work because it's not thoroughly explained despite being a major mechanic. >Also, which FE game is the best? That's an entire can of worms I won't even get into because the fanbase is so split all over the place on opinions. It's like talking about best final fantasy games there are so many games with major differences that the fanbase is so split on it although there is a similar situation with FE7/FF7 where they were most people's 1st game so nostalgia has a major factor. With FE7 it was also the 1st localized game. Just for example you have FE4 which is praised for it's story and unique mechanics compared to the rest of the series but often criticized for some of those same unique mechanics and the unit/weapon balancing is some of the worst in the series. On the other hand you have a game like Fates Conquest which the lunatic mode is considered one of the best designed and difficult modes in the series (only behind maybe FE12 Lunatic Reverse) but the story is considered to be absolute trash. Awakening and the other 2 Fates routes are generally considered some of the worst games in the franchise overall along with the original Gaiden.

While FE8 might seen like a good intro because of the tutorials, it does actually build on the formula of the previous titles. There will be some mechanics a new player might wish the older titles had if played in reverse.
I would suggest playing FE7 first, to get a general idea of the series. FE7 has a slow start, but great story, and better fleshed out main characters. FE6 is a prequel to 7, and is overall a lot tighter, but the maps can be absolute hell.
But the reason I suggest starting with 7 over 8 is because you'll appreciate the things 8 brings to the table more. Promotions will seems a lot more important. A unit you get called Myrrh will seem like a super power. It is actually a good sequel, and should be played in sequence.
Jacob Adams
I would suggest playing thracia as your first fire emblem
