Someone dug up words of a developer on Discord which was along the lines of him not agreeing with parents forcing their kids to be trans. One mapper hid the word 'fag' as part of a inaccessible area in a map, and there's also a parody of Olay soap named 'Ogay'. It goes without saying that ResetEra cat ladies lunged at 3D Realms and Voidpoint like a pack of 18th century French revolutionists. The publisher apologized, donated $10,000 to a charity that was relevant to them, and apparently sent some staff to get 'reeducated'.

Of course, the fact that the devs didn't buckle down and gave in angered a lot of people and caused a fair deal of refunds and even more review bombing on Steam than there was before. For the game, an actual patch hasn't been released to my knowledge but the devs claim the 'censorship' in the upcoming one will just be the one sprite and that instance of fag removed, but we'll see.

It's a pity since it's a pretty good faux-retro FPS and this is all probably what it's going to be remembered for.
